My Second Electrolysis Experience

Hello Everyone,

As I mentioned in my last post that I got my first electrolysis treatment from Debbie in Chicago. On my request she scanned over my cheeks and neck removing the most prominent hair. I was very happy with the treatment as I didn’t have to bear much pain, neither i had a single mark on my skin after treatment. I believe that is because of the accurate probe insertion. I have moved from Chicago to bayarea for three months (one month is already passed). I was not looking for another electrologist here as I was afraid of inaccurate insertion caused by inexperienced electrologist. But Lagirl suggested that i should continue with the process as i might lose benefit of the first treatment as well.

So, I started my online search and settled with one electrologist in San Jose. She told me on the phone that she has 24 years of experience. So, I went there for consultation. She works in her home which is beautifully decorated (she is also an interior decorator). Anyway, It’s been 4 weeks since my first treatment when i visited her. She doesn’t give sample treatment so I told her that I would have 15 minutes to start with. She started on my neck and I felt more pain than my first treatment. I felt pain in every insertion and could not feel hair sliding out (as i did in first one). As pain just numbed my ability to feel. Now, as I have only one experience before that I am not sure if that is normal to have this much pain. I was afraid that she might be scarring my skin. On the completion of 15 minutes she cleaned the area with a cotton swab and give me a mirror to have a look at it. My skin was reddish but I didn’t see any scar, so i decided to go ahead. So, she spent 30 more minutes on each cheeks and corners of upper lips. So, I ended up having 45 minutes treatment. She applied a numbing cream on my upperlips before treatment.

Pain was quickly fading away as I was driving back home. I washed my face with soap and then applied a fragrance free moisturizing lotion. In the morning I saw three small pits on right corner of my upper lip. They appeared in brown color and it seemed like upper layer of skin has been removed by these insertion. There were some more on neck. Some more scabs also appeared next day but they were not like pits. I don’t mind a scab on the skin but if skin is removed then mark will stay even after healing. Given the number of hair I have, if i receive such pits on every treatment then I will end up having battered skin. All the scabs are gone after 4 days of treatment but if i look closely i can see small un-smoothness of my skin near my upper lip.

She worked on big area but only left 5/6 serious marks. So, I can’t say she did a bad job but I want no hair and no marks (I know who doesn’t :)). She was a nice lady but I am reluctant to go to her again. Also, I am confused that what should I do now. search for another electrologist in bayarea or wait until i go back to Chicago. If you guys have any good recommendations I will appreciate that.

So, my first treatment with Debbie was 3 hours long and second one (with Mary Lou’s) was 45 minutes long. I guess, in second treatment regrown hair was treated. I guess second treatment took lesser time because not all the hair reappeared after first treatment. So, can I say that electrolysis is doing good to me or is it too early to say that?

  • Your options are not just this electrologist and the one in Chicago. The Bay Area has many many electrologists. So if you’re not happy with one, there are lots of others. Let us know which part of the bay you’re in.

  • You should wait about a week to see if there are still any signs left. Scabbing on some areas is not abnormal, but all signs should go away within a week. However, proper aftercare is important for this. Washing your face with soap is very harsh on the skin, especially after electrolysis. Same with using a lotion since it clogs pores. You should invest a few dollars into witch hazel at any drugstore and use it a few times a day after electrolysis until the skin heals completely. Avoid, soap, harsh facewashes, moisturizers/lotions, makeup, etc until the skin heals as much as possible.

  • More pain can be a result of skill, machine, or settings, or a combination. Hard to tell what it was here. It also sounds like you’re getting more/other areas done than you did in Chicago, which can play a part since various areas react differently.

I would advise you to research at a few more electrologists in the bay.

I live in mountain view but I work in San Jose. Any good recommendation in San Jose area will work for me. Arlene’s Electrolysis is near my home, please share if you have some information about them.

My first electrologist asked my to use Calamine lotion after treatment but I never bothered to buy that. Now I will keep witch hazel with me before my next treatment. As far as treatment area is concerned, same area was treated in both treatments. In second treatment more time was spent on upper lip though. I tried taking picture of my upper lip to share the damage but nothing appeared in the picture

I had consultation and sample treatment by Marjan in Los Altos. I would say she is nice but expensive. She charges $65/15 minutes and $115/hour. She didn’t cause me any less pain than my second electrologist. She sparsely picked some hair from here and there which didn’t contribute to my hair removal goal a bit. Also, on the phone she told me that she has 15 years of experience but I found somewhere on internet that she started school 11 years ago. This didn’t leave a good impression on me. She charged me $25 for consultation and for picking 10/11 hair from my face. I would rank Mary much above that Marjan, so I would prefer going back to her rather than going to Marjan again.

I will try Arlene’s in Mountain view this week. She told me on phone that she has 30 years of experience. I am really looking forward to that.

People price themselves out of business. Marjan’s rates are steep, very steep. I don’t know what her overhead is, but she should try to bring it down or be pretty darn fast and accurate to earn $65 per 15 minutes. I’m assuming she does not even have an Apilus Platinum to justify these charges. I’m guessing she is paying big money for the rent since it’s the Bay Area??? Who knows. These rates are enough to depress the already depressed unwanted hair consumer. Geez.

I am back after two more treatments. I went back to the electrologist in San Jose and showed her 3/4 pits on my upperlip corner and asked her to change settings to avoid such marks again. She didn’t admit that these pits were caused by her electrolysis. I sill let her do my upperlips again and now I have black marks on the other corner of lips as well. I thought it might be difficult for her to admit the mistake but she will be careful as I have showed her my concern, but i was wrong. I have observed one thing during the treatment that she kept sending current while making insertion as well. I saw that needle on the dial was not moving up and down with every insertion, rather it was up and she made couple of insertions. I guess that’s the reason I was feeling pain in every insertion and she left me marks. Anyway, I canceled my next appointment with her and dropped the idea of treating upperlips at all. I am not happy with the marks i have on my upperlip now and I wish they just heal (which doesn’t seem very likely).

I went to Arlene in Mountain view and I am happy with her treatment. She uses 7x magnification and Fischer, I didn’t feel much pain during the treatment. But she is out of town for few weeks and my next appointment with her is two weeks away. Meanwhile I have grown some dark hair on my chin and neck again. They are 15/20 in total. Now I am wondering how to get them treated before Arlene comes back. They are already 3/4 mm long, would I lose the benefit of electrolysis if I wait another two weeks? Do you have any recommendation for me in bayarea to get these hair treated?

thanks for your help

You have to disguise hair on or face in between appointments. Clip of shave. That’s all you can do until Arlene get’s back. Your hair growth cycle should be fine, don’t go any longer, as early anagen hairs are prime hairs for treatment.

Too bad your other lady didn’t listen closer and then respond. I like to use insulated probes for the underlip. Gold is good, but is usually my second choice if the hair is fine. Don’t give up on that area and I’m very proud of you for talking to you your electrologist about your concerns.

Dee

I searched online and found some other electologists in your part of the Bay Area for you that you can try to check out. I don’t know them personally, so you’ll have to call and ask what they use, how much experience they have, etc.

Thanks defahey and lagirl for replying. I talked to some of the electrologists you mentioned. Finally I had 15 minuted treatment on my chin+neck regrowth from one of them. I didn’t feel insertion but could feel little painful sensation, which i think is ok. I decided not to go more than 15 minutes just because I want to make sure that she didn’t leave me any marks. Can you please suggest me how to lighten black marks I got from my previous treatment. They are black spots much bigger than a point size.

Buy some tea tree oil and apply every day.

And remember, for social reasons, you are best to apply the Tea Tree Oil at bedtime, unless you don’t plan on going out during the day. That way only your bed partner risks being offended by smelling the scent of Christmas Tree until the scent fades away.
