This is my adventure with Laser Hair Removal (LHR). I will update this post as I progress through my treatment. I have been following HairTell for a while as a lurker. What a great resource for Hair Removal.
I am not a hairy beast by any means. I don’t have a hang up about hair on my body either. I have hair all over but for the most part it is very light or fine. I have pale skin but dark brown hair. My legs, arms and private parts have dark brown hair.
I would shave my girl parts to be completely bare all the time, if I did not have an issue with ingrown hairs which is why I decided that I was going to treat myself to LHR. I found a Chicago Med Spa offering 8 LHR sessions for $150 total per area. Sounds way to good to be true but this would be my first try at LHR so I thought this was a good chance to try it at an amazing price. I called to verify the information and was told that since I wanted to be complete hair free on my girl parts, I needed to purchase two certificates for a total of $300. All treatments will be completed by a licensed esthetician employed by the spa.
I then meet with the nurse practitioner soon after getting my certificates. After a few minutes of conversation and her review of my paperwork, she determined that I would be a good candidate for LHR. She did not look at my skin or the hair in the area that I wanted treated but I did not question this. I probably should have but I guess I am not that cautious since I did a lot of research before I went in to the appointment. Thank you Hair Tell Forum!!!
At this meeting, I found that I am skin type II (which is what I thought I was before I went) and this spa uses the Soprano XL laser machine. I know from this forum that it is not ideal but for this price it is really hard to not give it a try. I can also add later on my lower legs and underarms at the same deal (8 treatments per area for $150)
At my treatment appointment, my esthetician brought me back to the laser room and after letting me get changed out of my clothes, we started the procedure. There was no discussion about what we were going to do, she just spread the gel and off we went. I did ask her some questions but since I thought I was familiar with what to expect, I did not ask to many. Again, my fault and I will make sure I ask more questions about machine settings and options as we go on from here.
I have now learned that there is a difference between painless and pain less. Painless implies that there will be no pain. Pain less means that there will be pain but not as much as other options. LHR using the Soprano XL is pain less. At least my experience is pain less. I bought numbing creme for next time.
Wow, that kind of hurt. I wonder how bad the other laser hurts if this is supposed to be less painful. As the device is moved over my body, the laser zaps my hair follicles. I assume that it hurts in places that have hair in the follicle as it felt like small electrical shocks all over the places I normally shave but no shocks when she moved the device in areas that I have no hair and never have. It’s not all bad though since as soon as the laser moved on, the pain was gone. At least until the next spot was reached. The tech swept an area with the device and then would move on to another area to sweep.
I can say that I felt like the process was rushed but I know the procedure was supposed to be fast. I guess I will see what happens. Entire procedure was 5-8 mins.
The Soprano XL machine display said from top to bottom

I assume this was on pulse mode instead of SHR mode since it hurt. I could be wrong though.
My concern over the next few weeks will be hair growth especially over the labia area since I am not sure she even hit that area very well. I had to ask that the backside be done. Luckily I have 7 more tries with this. I will make sure that the tech gets in there good as I want to be completely hair free. My next appointment is in 7 weeks. I know I should wait 8-12 but I think my pubic hair grows in pretty fast so I will do this one at 7 weeks and then modify the time between as I determine how the hair is growing.
Thanks for reading my story, I will keep you updated as I go along.
