My 1st electrolysis appt, advice needed!

Hey every1 its been a while since I wrote my 1st ever post!
I finally booked an appointment to go see an electrologist in Glasgow where I live, the staff carrying out the electrolysis are all members of the british electrolysis association
Its going to be very exepensive but I hope its worth it and it works

Just a re run through my issues- I have PCOS and have battled with excess hair for may years, its at its worst now, ive had around 25 sessions of laser in the past which left me with pigementation and induces severe hair growth in areas where I only had thin hair before

Electrolysis is really my last chance

SO basically the lady at the clinic uses the blend tecnique- she said that was the best technique for hairs that have been plucked threaded, epilated etc, as the hair follicles have been distorted

She ran through some of the possble risks, and those are pigmentation, redness, scabbing spots
I asked how long a full clearance would take and she said for me it would be 7-8 hours- which i was quite surprised about
but she said that that would be too much for me to handle so she will carry out the electrolysis is patches and work her way around as the weeks go by

she carried out a test on 1 area of my face so far so good, ive got a few white headed spots the day after but apart from that its fine
she reccomeneded putting on aloe vera gel or witch hazel
and the part that I dont like is she said i had to stop tweezing and threading and should shave instead. I know this has to be done but im so scared of the stubble and ive never shaved before on my face and am scared it will make the hair growth worst!! :frowning:

I return in a week for an hours appointment- and the lady wants me to come in every week for a hour or two

Does this sound ok and could u guys give me some advice on what regime to use after an electrolyisis session i.e when to use aloe vera gel, witch hazel and tend skin , can i wear make up in the area, and also any advice on the best ways to shave my face and to hide stubble

Sorry i know lots of questions,im just so confusedd :frowning:

i’ll post pictures soon thanks!!!

I agree with the 7-8 hour estimate for a first full clearance if she is using blend. If you look like most of my average PCOS clients, I tell them 3-5 hours using PicoFlash or MicroFlash thermolysis, which is a quicker method. For all those that doubt the effectiveness of these high tech Flash thermolysis modes, doubt no more, they work just as well as blend. those that say “no” just don’t know what is possible because they rely on teachings from decades ago. If she isn’t set up to do the better Flash modes available today, blend will be just fine. It is a very good modality. I use it, but not for all hair situations and I would probably not need it for an initial clearance or even beyond. My strategy is not be her strategy. You will still get to the end, so do not worry. Check out as many electrologists as you can. Get short treatments, check out the cleanliness of the office, her procedures. Trust your instincts as you observe, feel and heal. Get several consults.

Shaving or clipping is a must. Nothing should be done that PULLS out the hair. You are wasting your money if you pull hair out after you start electrolyis. That is why, I like to have my clients lay on the table for two hours or more as I work away in PicoFlash thermolysis. I like to clear the face as soon as possible. If you need to break it up, then okay. She will have to make that call as she can see you and she knows what her abilities are. If an electrologist does not have the proper set up or training to get the hair off asap, then you have to go slower. Again, that is okay. I like to get all the noticeable hairs off and then see the client in 3 weeks to get the next group and so on until I see signs that we can spread it out to 4-6 weeks. People are basically 90% finished by month twelve and from month 12 to month 18, I see the client every 6 weeks to knock out the scattered hairs that pop up. They may have to shave a couple times in between, but not every day like they use to.

If you get white pustules, that is where dabbing some tea tree oil on at bedtime helps. Avoid makeup for 24-48 hours, but ask the electrologist what she recommends. Others can comment on the best way to shave and to hide the stubble. Yes, do post pictures.

I like what your electrologist said. It sounds good so far. Remember, we all have our own strategies. Remember, ALL electrolysis modalities work. A good blend electrologist will give you what you pay for AND SO WILL A PROFICIENT FLASH THERMOLYSIS PRACTITIONER. USe the purest witch hazel, aloe vera gel and I like tea tree oil (small dabs at bedtime). Keep asking and learning.

  • You should strive to come in for long treatments up front to get to a clearance asap. Then you just come in every 3 weeks or so to clear the area in one sitting if possible.

  • Any method of electrolysis works well in good hands. Blend is fine, but thermolysis is faster. Both work well.

  • Shaving does nothing to the hair. It won’t make it worse. It’s only cutting the hair above the skin’s surface, like getting a haircut. It’s an old wive’s tale that it can make it worse.

  • Are you on any medication for PCOS to control future growth?

  • I think witch hazel during the day and a little tea tree oil at night works best for aftecare.

  • It’s really unfortunate that your laser clinic treated your fine hair.

Are you far from Oban? A former colleague is returning to set up practise in Oban, and will be using The Apilus platinum. She will probably be setting up her clinic in Dec/jan, so you may be able to experience for yourself, the difference Dee is trying to convey. Glasgow has got some good clinics,so you should do just fine.

You’re sort of at the mercy of who is available and good in your area. Don’t worry, any mode of electrolysis–practiced correctly–WORKS!

hey thank you every one for you replies, I had my 1st long appointment yesterday, it went well, but today when ive woken up my chin in sowllen and i have white spots that are bursting its looks asolutelky awful, ive been applying the sterex aloe vera gel and dabbed teat tree oil on the area treated, im actually a bit worried, im trying 2 add a photo to show u all but im not sure how to upload photos

Call your electrologist and tell her of your reaction. She might want to see you today, just to see the reaction. Usually, the first time is when you will see the worst reaction because of the amount of hair and the fact that your hairs were in all stages of growth.

Return as soon as she recommended so that you will stay on top of the new growth.

I have new clients soak their skin with witch hazel compresses for that first day. Witch hazel has some very nice skin healing properties.
