Do you advise this? I am considering beginning a treatment regime of Dermabrasion. I hear this will make your skin very red for a day or so. I also plan on having my beard area thinned out a bit if possible. Are both these considered to extreme for my skin at the same time?
you shouldn’t have these treatments at the same time. it’s too harsh on your skin. hair removal on the male beard is tricky. you need to do lots of research and be aware of potential risks, like patchiness.
You sure don’t do these two things in the same week.
How much time should I allow? I was thinking for example maybe having Microdermabrasion done in mid Septemeber and start having my laser hair removal on my beard area by early Novemeber.Problem is I have to go for my beard atleast 4-6 treatemnts and about 6-8 for my dermabrasion.Should I put one off a year or 6 months? I guess I need to know what a safe timetable is.
you should talk to a doctor. and also, we would need to know why you are looking to do microdermbrasion.
also, PLEASE read all the posts on this forum on hair removal on male beards. it’s a very difficult area to treat and you need to find someone very experienced with a good laser who knows exactly how to treat male beard specifically. otherwise, you can end up patchy and looking odd as many here report. this isn’t a simple procedure you can trust anyone with. most people don’t know what they’re doing, especially when it comes to beards and many are not using proper lasers in general.
I get most male beards to first clearance in 10 to 20 hours using electrolysis, and that can be done spread out over 2 to 3 days.

Well, I am looking for Microdermabrasion because I am in my mid 30’s and want to look younger. Theres a guy I work with who had it done and he looks great. He is about 10 years older and told me he had a bad reaction to it, but it was worth it. He said his face was beat red for about 3 or 4 days and they said he was one of the very few who reacted the way he did. He said it was very tender and hurt the first two times he had it done. It seemed like it shrunk his pores as well.So, Thats the reason why I want to do that.
As for the laser hair removal on the beard. I just have a thick beard.I hate shaving and having it look like I haven’t shaved in a day or so. I would love to shave maybe once or twice a week. I do not want to be completely hairless on my face but I thought I would thin it out some. I could be wrong,but I think this can be done with some lasers. I’ll do what you say and go back read some other posts.
Would you be able to reccommend any one in my state who could do this (I live in Connecticut)? What questions and what exactly should I look for when I go about looking for a Doctor? Thanks again for your input.
have you seen the guy you know who had it done before his treatments? are you sure he looks younger AFTER the treatments? maybe he thinks he does but he actually looked the same before 
just something to consider. there are very few “miracle” treatments out there. if they were, everyone would be doing it. and do factor in the redness etc. you may have to have some down time after the treatments.
i wouldn’t do both treatments in the same span of time if I were you. It’s just a lot of stress on the skin and I would expect that in itself to make the skin look worse overall. it needs time to heal. so pick one or the other to do first, the entire set of treatments.
in terms of laser hair removal, I am not saying that laser doesn’t work. I’m just saying that it is hard to get an even reduction on a male beard and there aren’t that many experienced clinics with good machines that know how to do it correctly. there are some pictures you can find on this forum from men who are left with patchy results and are very unhappy. they basically have to shave MORE often, not less, because of the weird patchy way the beard grows in on them after botched treatments. this area also can get swollen for a few days after the treatment since the hairs are so coarse and close together. Just some things to consider. Run a search for your state as well as other major cities nearby. There is a recommended clinic in NYC, DC area, etc. Also, read the FAQs and the other link below on how to find a clinic near you (it doesn’t have to be a doctor. i just has to be someone who has at least 5-7 years of experience doing LHR specifically and beards specifically, with the proper laser for your skin type). All the information you need is right here. Do your research slowly and carefully. Check out 4-5 places before making any investments.
Electrolysis is also an option. It is another permanent method, but it works by removing each hair at a time. However, the benefit is that there is no risk of patchiness and you can remove whichever hairs bother you most. A bit more control over the reduction you’re trying to achieve.
Thanks again for the advice! After your post I got to thinking. Would it be better if I went to an Electrolysis? Would it cost more than lasers? Would it be less intrusive on my face? Would you reccommend dermabrasion and electrolysis at around the same time? I thibnk I may start researching that instead of the laser. What do you think? Thanks again for EVERYTHING!!!
The process of electrolysis tends to tighten the skin and the loss of the violence of the hair growth process on the face usually leads to some extra benefit for the male face as well. One may not need any microdermabrasion after a good clearance with electrolysis. If one wanted to do one anyway, I would suggest that the best time is when one has completed the full clearnce of the beard and is done.
I wouldn’t do any two treatments on your face at the same time. You will see some irritation after electrolysis as well that will need to heal. You are killing hair with either method, so it’s going to be at least slightly irritating to your skin and both methods involve committment.
You can get a test spot done with both methods and then make a decision. The downside of electrolysis is that it’s slow relative to laser as you’re removing one hair at a time, and regardless, you also have to do your research to find someone who’s using a newer machine, best method for your skin, and has good speed.
Okay, I’ve been giving this some thought. What I am thinking about is going to an electrolysis to have my beard thinned out. I am focusing mostly on the neck at first and then up towards the cheeks,chins, and moustache area.I would like to shave once or twice a week and try to keep my beard area as smooth as possible.
Anyone know if an electrolysis will be more exspensive than laser? I wish this could be done by lasers but my concern is the bald patches on my face. I don’t want this to be something takes years to accomplish.If anyone has a ball aprk figure of how much this would cost,that would be great just to give me some idea.
Also,it was mentioned I could also tighten my skin while having this done. Can someone explain this further? I would LOVE for my pores to be smaller and am just curious if I can not only remove the course hair on my face but also take care and benefit the same (or similar) as I would if I had Microdermabrasion.

electrolysis removes hairs one by one, and most hairs will need to be zapped 2-3 times. also, whatever you see right this second is only about 30% of all the hair you have on that area (the rest is dormant right now and will need to be treated in a few months once the hair cycles). so think about how many hairs you have to remove in this way, and that should give you a rough estimate. it is definitely a commitment for a year or two, with weekly treatments to start and then moving to once every three weeks after a several months, at around $60 per hour.
It is absolutely impossible to tell you want you want to hear as there are too many variables. Laser will be cheaper and less time needs to be spent in an office on treatments, but you may risk some patchiness, especially in the beginning. So it’s up to you whether it’s worth the risk for a quicker and possibly cheaper option.
