Mediostar on Type II/III chest and abs

Hi,
this site has been very useful, so thanks upfront for the wealth of info already provided.

I’m going in for my first consultation at a local place in LA that seems to be well regarded on yelp/city search for all sorts of skin related treatments. For hair removal they use the Mediostar laser (diode). I have light-ish skin which I armchair at between type II and type III. My chest and stomach hair is dark and coarse.

Some searching on the archives here makes me think that there have been mixed results with the gliding technique sometimes associated with this laser. In addition, it seems like one of the Gentlase lasers may be better suited for my skin/hair type.

Just looking for a little more input about the effectiveness of/experiences with this Mediostar laser and whether I really should be tracking down another clinic with a better system.

Also, feel free to PM me if you know of a reputable and reasonably priced clinic in the East LA area (los feliz/silverlake/glendale).

Thanks all.

Do NOT sign up for anything yet. You need to do proper research if you want to see results, and check out 4-5 clinics. There are dozens of clinics in LA, so finding a good one with a good laser is not an issue once you put in the time to do the research.

GentleLASE is an alex and a more powerful laser than a diode. Expertise is also important.

Please understand that many clinics post fake reviews for themselves, so don’t judge purely on that. In addition, hair removal is a very specific art and being great at other treatments has nothing to do with getting someone results when it comes to LHR. You need someone who does LHR all day long, not a bunch of other things. That’s how you get experienced and learn how to set proper settings etc.

Run a search on this forum. There are many discussions on clinics in LA. I went o Dr Babapour in Beverly Hills. Dr Hamilton in Woodland Hills is also recommended. I’m sure there are other clinics with GentleLASE who know what they’re doing on the east side. You just need to put some effort into finding them and then going to free consultations to see if they know what they’re doing. Read the FAQs and know them well so you can judge this when you ask questions at the consultation.

Btw, it’s ok if the clinic is not right next door. You only need treatments once every 2-3 months.

thanks for your response. I’ve found another place that uses GentLase in Glendale that I will also consult with next week. I spoke with the practitioner on the phone for twenty minutes about her experience and her clinic. I thought her responses to some of the questions you propose in the FAQ seemed very reasonable/well informed (based on what I’ve learned from this forum).

In terms of doing “proper research,” are there warning signs or other signals aside from general “these people are scam artists and not suitably experienced” sirens that I might consider when consulting? I’m an attorney so I feel like I can sniff out BS pretty well at least 10% of the time  - but obviously the flashy sales pitch or the best looking store front isn’t indicative of quality of care, so what do I really need to be on the lookout for?

Yep, definitely stay away from a sales pitch. Check out the questions to ask I provide in the link below. See how they answer them and compare to answers in the FAQs. Generally, you just want to look for someone interested in your results, not just in getting you signed up for a non-refundable package. Things like charging per treatment and being able to get out of a package are signs that the clinic is confident.

Also, when you go in, always ask about the settings they’re planning to use. On GenteleLASE, 18mm is the largest spot size that is preferable to use and the highest power on that spot size is 20joules. See if they can do a test spot. Anything under 14J is probably not going to produce permanent results, so you want to steer of clinics who are too conservative. You need someone who understands the art enough to set high settings but KNOW from experience what will burn you. There is a fine line there between powerful and potential for burning.
