Male back laser hair removal -- in Toronto

Hi

I’d like to get your input on multiple points:

  1. What laser to go for? I’m Type IV most likely. East Indian background but quite fair (light brown). I know Yag is very popular but i was looking over this NYC doctor’s website and he seems to like Epilight a LOT, even for dark skinned folks:

  1. Any specific recommendations in Toronto? I believe only Baywood Clinic has Yag. Sunnybrook hospital and Yonge-Eglington Laser clinic have LightSheer. Espada has Aurora. I don’t suppose all these are good enough for my skin complexion and powerful enough for back hair removal (coarse on my upper back)

  2. How many sessions? I understand this is variable and depends on the individual response. But is 6-7 about normal?

  3. Can one hope for permanency?

  1. Is Epilight permanent?
Since February 2000 the FDA has allowed the claim of permanent hair reduction for Epilight.

The FDA now requires proof of permanence. Electrolysis was grandfathered. Since it had been claiming permanence before the law required proof of permanence - electrolysis is not required to prove permanence - but it can still state that it is permanent.

I have completed a study of 150 treatment sites in my patients. My patients had no adverse side effects. They had approximately 45% hair reduction. This hair reduction lasted for at least 6 to 13 months after I last treated these patients with Epilight. These results are superior to those reported by lasers such as the ruby laser. In a ruby laser study, that, I believe, was used to obtain FDA agreement to the use of the word permanence - the authors state that the ruby laser produces permanent hair reduction - the patients had more side effects and less of an improvement in their excess hair - as compared to my results. The ruby laser study noted that any hair reduction at 6 months was maintained for the two year period, which they believed indicated permanent reduction. Since my patients (treated by me personally), obtained hair reductions lasting over 6 to 13 months-my results appear to indicate that Epilight hair reduction is permanent.

I personally have patients who have over 7 years of hair removal using pulsed light Epilight treatment. I do not know of any physician reporting longer term hair removal using Epilight. My patients are Happy! I am Happy! I am still following them to see if the hairs ever do regrow. Each patient is different! There is no guarantee that all Epilight pulsed light hair removal treatments will last for 24 months or more.

Please remember that merely waxing hairs can result in decreased hair growth for several months. When evaluating any physician’s claim to successful hair removal, make sure that they show you photographs of THEIR longterm results using that technology. In my office, I PERSONALLY evaluate and treat each patient. We examine the hairs in each area and photograph each area – to ACCURATELY and objectively evaluate each patient’s response. I started doing this measurement when I first began using Epilight under an investigational study on July 5, 1996, before Epilight was licensed by the FDA. In July 1997 I was one of the first three Epilight investigators in the study that was submitted to the FDA and resulted in Epilight licensure.

Approximately 15 other physicians started using Epilight about 9 months after I did. I PERSONALLY treat each patient in my office for any medical problem – whether with Epilight, Photoderm, or standard dermatological problems.

This experience enables me to use newer and more customizable settings than standard Epilight users can utilize. My ablity to personally deliver the highest level of care; way beyond the beginner presets that many non physicians or beginner physicians use on Epilight, should translate into giving you the BEST and longest term results possible – with the fewest side effects, at the most economical rate.

I’ll probably have more questions, but these’ll do for now. Thanks!

first of all, this is a biased appraisal of a device that this person uses. There is no validity to any of his statements. It’s an IPL and he praises it because he uses it. Everyone will say that their laser is the best. They’re trying to do business and make money. Doesn’t mean it’s in your best interest.

Yes, a Yag laser would be best for you. There are various models available, check the FAQs for some of them. You can run provider searches on some manufacturer sites to find specific places in your area that use them. Yags work well on coarse hair.

Hello.

Thanks for the response.

Incidentally, it was your post from long ago that linked to his site and I got reading over there.

Do you think this is bias or someone actually keeping track of people long-term? We don’t have any other source for comparision of permanence in hair reduction like this, do we?

Btw, what do you think is the general number of treatment required – 6/7 or 12-15? I don’t think I could afford the latter at $600/session. I know nobody can answer this question over the internet with accuracy with some pictures I saw on this Dr.Jay’s website showed remarkable hair reduction after 2 sessions. And those backs were hairier than mine!

From what I’ve heard IPL is not as effective as laser. You can’t trust all studies-lots of tainted/twisted research. My opinion is laser for longer lasting effects.

if you want some unbiased studies, take a look here:

You’re right, it’s impossible to tell you how many sessions it would take without seeing what you’re trying to remove. Also, everyone reacts differently, so there are no guarantees. The only way to know is by trying it, at least a few times to see how your particular hair and skin react. For a man’s back, I would lean towards counting on at least 8-10 treatments.

Thanks for the link.

As I replied elsewhere to you, Yag it is then. Now I just have to find places in Toronto which would have this.

In Toronto, they have all these spas which bundle together eye lasik, botox, varicose vein treatments with laser hair removal. How does one try and ensure that the techs doing this are REALLY good. One could go with Yag and still lose out big time with an inexperienced technician, no?

Don’t trust ANY of the photos! To get treated, you have to shave and I think that the “after” pics are simply taken the day of treatment #n. Afterall, they show the gorilla-man for “before” and then (probably the same) guy with NO hair at all. We know laser cannot do that in a couple of treatments, so its staged. LHR may work, but don’t rely on photographs for guidance. BTW, many websites use the same pictures, so either one hairy dude went all over the world getting LHR or these are “stock” pictures. Hmmmm…

I notice that many of these pictures are provided by the laser manufacturers, that’s why they’re all the same. hmmm, I wonder if that’s a good way to judge.

yes, you can lose out with an unexperienced tech no matter which laser is used. you need to have 3-4 consultations and compare. use the questions listed in the sticky post for your consultations etc, get a feel for the places and who will be treating you. of course, a place that specializes in hair removal specifically is better generally than somewhere where they do all kinds of procedures, but it depends. what you need to look for is that whoever will be treating YOU anywhere you decide to go has specific experience in hair removal and sounds like they know what they’re talking about. The way to make sure is to read the FAQs so you’re familiar with correct answers yourself, that way you can judge whether they know what they’re talking about or just trying to sell you their services.

I’ve been going to Spa Medica. They have two locations (two different machines). I have found them to be incredibly responsible, the technicians are all RN, and extremely fair should the treatments miss spots etc.

Hi

I just googled Spa Medica and this place is E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E!!! $1200/session for just the back!! Usually other places in Toronto are charging that much for full upper body!!

The owner’s bio is very impressive but I doubt he’ll be the one running the laser on my hairy back!

Plus: what laser do they use?

that’s expensive! are you sure that’s not for 5 treatment package?

No m’am – 5 pkgs is $47xx.

Google them, you’ll see.

And then there is 8% tax on top of it!

Ok, so I have some more to ask:

  1. How frequent are the treatments? Once per month?

  2. What to expect after 6 treatments with a Yag?

  3. Are there any risks involved that we know of?

Thanks for posting your reco for Spa Medica. Do you have any other suggestions for good laser clinics in this area? I’m looking for an alexandrite laser.

Thanks!

Guys honestly as I’ve said so many times before it’s called using Google and searching. Zoom in on google maps to downtown Toronto, type laser hair removal and it will drop a bunch of pins. Click each one go to their website, see their pricing and laser used or email/call them to find out. It’s not really that hard. There’s literally less than 5 places downtown I’ve found that use an alex laser. The clinics that use alex as well aren’t even hard to find, they’re clear on their website and just googling it will find it.

Do you know what kind of lasers they use at Spa Medica – I’m looking for an Alexandrite. I checked out their website and they seem pretty decent. Hours look good too. Thanks for the reco.

Any other tips would be greatly apprecaited.

You can always call the clinic and ask these questions. See the list of question to ask at your consultation at the link below.
