I was wondering if anyone might have a referral for a good electrologist in the Madison area who is also experienced in dealing with male facial hair. I’d really appreciate any help, I don’t like the thought of having to stand this much longer (of course I know it will be a few years yet anyway, but the sooner I get started the better).
stand what much longer? having facial hair as a male? have you read the electrolysis section and the “how to find an electrologist” thread? how old are you?
45 minutes from Downtown Madison is Monroe WI and Rhonda Elmer as listed in the referral section.
She has an older but nice Fischer Compu-Blend Machine, decent speed and really good technique. Hours are by appointment Tuesday - Saturday.

I can highly recommend Rhonda, as she has actually worked on me, and is well worth the trip.
Thanks lagirl, I had read that. It mentioned word of mouth as the best tool for finding an electrologist so I figured here would be a good place to start. Oh and I’m 18.
James, I think I saw that you mentioned her in a different section, yes. At that point I was hoping for something closer, but as she’s highly recommended I suppose it’s definitely worth the trip. Three quarters of an hour isn’t terrible anyhow, it’s just that I don’t drive so I am reliant on biking, bussing, or my parents for transportation. I’ll work it out somehow though! Thanks very much for your help, I couldn’t have asked for a quicker reply.
you are male and 18 and already want your facial hair removed completely? is it very coarse and bothersome? what is your reasoning for doing this? Just want to make sure you thought this through as people often change their minds a lot about things down the line, even if it seems like you know for sure you want something at 18.
This is also going to be pretty expensive. Are your parents aware of this and paying for it? What do they think?
btw, male facial hair is highly stimulated by hormones, so there is a good chance you will need touchups throughout your life.
Well, I have several reasons. For one, yes, I would say it is rather coarse and definitely bothersome. Also, my face is very sensitive; I almost never manage to shave without serious irritation and bleeding (and I’m very careful - I spend about half an hour shaving each time). So I hate the hair and I hate the shaving, which is a bit of a conundrum right there. Additionally I am also possibly (probably?) transgendered, which would obviously make this quite a bit more of a necessity.
I am aware that electrolysis is expensive, as I’ll be footing the bill. It won’t be easy, especially with heading off to college in the fall (scholarships are of some help there) but I’ll manage.
Currently (as of about a week ago) I am, in fact, on Spironolactone (an antiandrogen), so male hormones aren’t an issue at this point.
Then you really will need Rhonda, as you will find that she is probably the only person in your area who will be willing to do a 4 hour appointment, or even an all day affair where you work 4 hours, break for lunch and come back and do another 3 to 4 hours. Of course, you have to pay for something like that up front, and if you for some reason can’t finish the day, you have to have the balance used at a future appointment, as she won’t be able to resell the unused time with no notice.
I will say also that people really shortchange those with painful facial hair as being whiny complainers who are making a mountain out of a mole hill, but those are the people who are not feeling the pain of thousands of pin pricks all day, and they are not constantly bleeding from ripped and scratched skin.
I will also say that biking it to Rhondas will do wonders for any weight loss you may want to do
I’m sure it would. Although, to be honest losing weight might not be the best thing at this point. I’ve lost 5 pounds down to 110 since I started on the Spiro (maybe from loss of appetite? maybe water loss? I did think it was supposed to make it harder to lose weight, though). I wouldn’t mind losing muscle mass, which is losing weight also, I guess.
The all-day appointment would be really nice, just to get to full clearance in as short a time as possible. It’s not as important for me as it would be for other people maybe because I am not going full time yet… probably will just hide it through my first year of college and change after I transfer. Time for thinking.
It would be amazing if this could be covered by insurance, but that probably is not at all likely, is it? I know my mom has a good plan from the state through working at UW Madison, but still…
