Looking for an electrologist in Massachusetts

Hi all, I have been lurking for a while and sent some private messages to members hoping someone would recommend an electrologist in MA and unfortunately have had no luck.

I live in Lincoln MA, about 1/2 hour west of Boston. I have never had electrologist before but I’m tired of plucking the few coarse hairs on my neck and chin and bleaching my sideburns.

Cost and pain won’t be a huge issue for me, I’m more concerned with how I will look throughout out the process and of course want to be hair free as quickly as possible. I’m willing to spend as much time as is required up front to achieve first clearance quickly if I find a skilled electrologist capable of doing this.

Any recommendations will be much appreciated!

Have you tried running a search on the forum for Boston yet? I would start there and read past discussions. Do Advanced Search and expand to 3 years or so.

The best way to find the best electrologist is to call around and ask who uses what method (you likely want someone with a newer computerizer epilator like Apilus using thermolysis). Then go in for free consultations and get sample treatments. See how your skin reacts. If all goes well, you shouldn’t have much of a reaction - just a bit of redness for a couple hours.

Hey, thanks for the response. I did do a search and expanded it to include the past 5 yrs, because I saw that was recommended for someone else. I ended up doing a search for Massachusetts because Boston brings up whole other issues. I even tried messaging people with MA as their location. I guess I just hoped a member had already found someone great so I wouldn’t have to waste the time calling/traveling all around the area.

Well, here is list for MA electrologists. I can’t offer more than this. Choice, can you offer another website?

You will just have to do the leg work if no one else responds with a specific recommendation.

I’m afraid you are right, Dee. Banhunt has some leg work ahead. The licensing board’s site list only one in Lincoln. It’s a start.

So now that I have made a few calls I have a few more questions.

Is it unusual to operate a hair removal business and not answer the phone accordingly? Only 2 of 12 places I just called had a secretary/ receptionist to answer the phone. Most were just answering machines, and some just answered the phone “hello”, like it was their home phone, forcing me to ask if I had reached an electrologist.

The receptionists I spoke with were not able to provide much detail about the types of machines or method used. The electrologists themselves were a bit taken aback I think that I had so many questions about their practice. Most just gave me quick answers, like they use shortwave. Two even asked who advised me to ask all these questions.

I guess I can cross a few off the list right away and will maybe set up appointments with a few others. I wonder why more people don’t post online reviews like they do for other services.

I think that it is common for electrologists to not answer their phones if they are with a client. There is a recent post regarding this if you want to do the search. My message indicates that I am with a client. I have called other electrologists that answered “hello” and was also taken aback as you were, thinking I had the wrong #. Home business or not, they should answer appropriately.

I can’t tell you how rare it is for someone to ask me about my electrolysis equipment, my training, my sanitation and sterilization procedures, etc. I have had my Apilus for almost 3 years, and in that time, no one, on the phone nor in person has asked me about it. It’s like buying a Corvette and no one noticing! So it does not surprise me at all that the receptionists couldn’t answer your questions. This is something that more and more laser practices are addressing. It is becoming common to see receptionists at laser manufacturers’ workshops, just getting enough education so they can answer some basic questions on the phone. It would be very easy for an electrologist to type up a “cheat sheet” for the receptionist.

What you experienced with a few electrologists borders on unprofessional arrogance, but let me try to explain.

Most electrologists are sole proprietors. Some work out of their home. Having an office is very expensive. Having a receptionist makes it more expensive. No electrologist should answer the business phone with “hello”. Ugh. Answering machines or voice mail usually means that the electrologist is busy with a client. I don’t answer my phone when I’m working, but I do return messages ASAP, usually in between clients. I have a clear message on my phone so that the potential client knows that they reached my place of business. If I had a receptionist at my office, the cost to my clients would have to increase dramatically.

What you experienced is normal in the world of electrology, but don’t let that deter you from checking out as many practitioners as possible. I know it is hard, but it’s the only way to go about this.

I see nothing wrong with asking the questions you asked. The cautious reaction to these questions may tell you all you need to know. If someone asks me a few questions related to equipment, hygiene, costs - I welcome that. Why be secretive and defensive? I have nothing not to be proud of and I am very thankful for client consumers who put careful thought into this.

Keep calling around and be proud of yourself for asking these relevant questions. These attitudes are all too prevalent, but not every electrologist will sound so defensive and cold when you call. Some are great business people and electrologists. The ones that are defensive towards you, just blame it on hairtell and ask them to tune in so they can understand why you are asking questions. Maybe they will learn something that will help them improve their business (and personality).

More Massachusetts electrologists. Some of these names are not members of the AEA and some are already on the first list I gave you.

I am pretty happy with my electrologist in Boston. Look for “Advanced Electrolysis” in Brookline. Camille is very experienced and extremely flexible when it comes to setting an appointment.

I tried a couple of other electrologists before that and they were a disaster.

Here are four reviews on Camille from 2005 to 2008. Camille’s last name, please?

Camille is amazing

Camille has made my life so much better and hair free! Camille is amazing! Her experience and knowledge is unmatched. Her establishment is impeccably clean, warm and inviting. Camille gives incredibly professional service. She is good natured, caring and always friendly. She takes time to listen to your needs. Camille is wonderful! She has an amazingly gentle touch that makes it all seem painless. I could not find anyone willing to remove my nuisance hair for me. My nuisance hair had been making my daily life miserable for almost 20 years. I travel a couple hours from out of state just so to see Camille. When I visited her for the first time I was very uneasy and embarrased, but Camille was very understanding. She listened to my needs and desires and indicated that it would not be any trouble for her to work on me. When she worked on me she was very kind, compassionate and caring. Camille’s gentle touch made it seem painless as she worked her wonders on me. No more hair! I can not express how grateful that I am to Camille for helping me. I LOVE HER! She made my daily life so much more comfortable. I am constantly reminded of how much she changed my life and I just want to thank her each and every day for doing such a great job on me. I can’t wait to go back and see Camille to have her work on my other areas that need attention. Thank you! thank you! thank you Camille!
Pros: Camille is warm, caring, kind, compassionate and extreemly experienced.
Cons: None

Camille performs miracles

When my doctor referred me to Camille, I was skeptical that she could really, truly get rid of the facial hair that had been plaguing me for the last 10 years. (notably, in the last year the hair had started to become ingrown, creating unpleasant acne) At my consultation she looked at my face and said that it was in fact no big deal, and she could get rid of it over the course of four laser treatments and a few electrolysis treatments. And indeed, after the first last treatment the ingrowns disappeared and the hair thinned out, such that my painful self-consciousness is no longer a concern. It’s not cheap, but this is something I’ve been thinking about for a while so I was prepared for the price tag. Also, it’s worth noting that my skin and hair were particularly suitable for laser, as I have pale skin and dark hair, so those with different skin tone and hair color may not see the same dramatic results.
Pros: Camille’s wonderful, upbeat attitude
Cons: cost, parking difficult in neighborhood

Works wonders

This place changed my life. I used to have really thick hair in all the wrong places – it was really embarassing and caused me constant anxiety. I got weekly treatments over the course of a few months (on my chest and tummy). She zapped dozens (maybe a hundred) hairs. A few stubborn ones took repeated treatments (to be expected) But, it is now 5 years later and the hair is gone for good.

Laser wasn’t a good option for me (per my dermatologist sister) since I had thick black hair and brown skin (laser targets pigment and it would have zapped the color in my skin). Plus laser isn’t permanent removal, just reduction. I had tried everything else – waxing, shaving, plucking --everything led to ingrown hairs.

Camile was wonderful – very experienced, gentle, knowledgeable. It was practically painless. She was also really helpful in giving me recommendations on other electrologists when I moved away. She was very professional, her place was always clean and inviting, and she was always punctual.

I’m really not sure how she stays in business because she does such a good job fixing the problems people come to her for!
Pros: permanent hair removal, professional, good value
Cons: takes patience and repeated treatments.

Camele is unbelievalbe. I have gone to her for a while now, and the hair is gone forever. She is very gentle and knowledgable. Her schedule flexibility has no match.
Pros: relaxing, fle

Out of curiousity? What are her prices? I’m actually quite curious about her now.

I believe her full name is Camille Vitiello, and I just found the website of her business: Advanced Electrolysis

I’m curious about her now too, and thinking about just going in for a consultation sometime and asking some questions.

Hi all,

I just wanted to update the thread. I ended up going to see an electrologist in Wellesley for a consultation. I was not impressed with her at all and decided to keep looking. I went for another consultation today at A and A Electrolysis and Skin Care Associates http://www.aaelectrolysis.com/. I met with Elena who was very nice and tried to be accommodating. She even suggested having me book appointments with the owner as she has more experience and might give me better results.

A few things she said were disconcerting. She is also a laser technician and suggested several times that I use laser on my face insisting it will be quicker and less painful. I had to tell her several times that I was not interested and felt this was a very poor recommendation. She also suggested neosporin as aftercare and made a few inaccurate comments about the CNS, which I let slide.

I was mostly concerned that they would be willing to put in the time commitment up front so I can get a rapid first clearance quickly. She said this wouldn’t be a problem that they have a few clients who book 2 hour time slots. Her only concern would be how well I would tolerate it as I had never had electrolysis before. I agreed and she did a test patch. It was only about 5 minutes but it was significantly more painful than I had anticipated.

She had a Silhouet tone blend 128 machine. She said she always uses blend although the machine can also do thermolysis. We agreed my hairs are very fine so I’m not sure I agree that blend is necessary and will bring this up with the owner at my first appointment on Wednesday.

My skin is still a bit pink and bumpy and my appointment was 12 hours ago. I have Thursday off and I’m hoping I will look ok by Friday to go back to work. They also charge $75 per hour, which seems a bit pricey, but I recognize that everything is a bit more expensive around here. I think I’m just getting nervous now that I’m actually doing this!

Thanks for the great advice, I feel much more prepared now that I found this website!

I think you should search onward. Maybe there is someone using the better modes of flash thermolysis which is deadly to hair growth tissue. Microflash or picofalsh thermolysis would be faster and just as destructive. Blend is a great modality and will most certainly bring you the gift of permanent hair removal, however, better epilators are out there and faster types of flash thermolysis will get more hair off fast, thus pleasing you faster and keep your hopes alive.

If you find someone who fits the bill, then tell those that have not upgraded and retrained that you are seeing the practitioner accross town who has.

Price wise - not great for what they offer, but that they are not out of the range of what electrologists charge per hour. See what else you can find (and no neosporin!)

Dee

That price is pretty average. That machine is decent. Are there still other options to check out in your area? Anyone with an Apilus?

Well thanks again for the help. On your recommendations I canceled the appointment I scheduled and will continue searching. I did not heal well at all unfortunately and do not want to start this process on anything less than the best footing. Thanks again. I will post as soon as I find someone recommendable in Boston.
