length of electrolysis appt for legs?

Hi, I have been searching the threads but cannot find the post…I hope you can help me!

I’d like to start electrolysis on my legs (knees and calves) but am not sure about how long my first appointment should be. Would anyone on hairtell advise? or point me to a post?

I am a female with fine hairs on my leg; I think 2-3 hours per leg is sufficient for my first appointment sounds about right. I have been growing out my leg hair for 4 weeks to prepare but think that I will have to spread out my appointments due to the scheduling of me and my electrologist.

When people have their legs done, do they tend to do one leg on one day, and another leg on a different day? or do people usually have one long session? And, do people use the numbing cream? I generally don’t use anything but ice, so I’m not sure if it hurts more on legs than it would on your face.

Thanks Hairtell! Electrolysis changed my life!

Here you go:

Thanks! I guess I will need more time on my legs than I thought for my first appointment! I hope I can spread out my appointments throughout the week.

Thank Goodness it is winter!

If you only have 4 weeks of growth you need to be prepared that new hairs will keep coming through week on week until at least about 12 weeks. So as soon as your electrologist clears an area, it may have new hairs appear shortly after.

You can do as long as both you and your electrologist can manage. I could not manage leg treatment with the area being numbed with EMLA. To be able to work as fast as possible, it may be best to start from one area and work outwards, clearing everything along the way, rather than hopping about.

I don’t want to advise you to interfere with your electrologist’s treatment, but if the hairs are long enough I really advocate finger removal rather than tweezers to make sure those follicles are really killed first time. Leg treatment should be quick and easy to completion.

I agree with Stoppit, if you have fine hairs, in a month you can have only 50% (or perhaps less) present on the surface of the skin. The healing process in the treated follicles will help accelerate the appearance of other hairs, from untreated follicles. But still, you will need several months for all hairs in the area become visible, and can thus be removed by your electrologist.

The first clearance in these legs (up to the knee) will be done this coming week. Then we will know exactly the number of hours to complete the first sweep of hairs. Probably, there will be no second time, but with this strategy would have required 20% of the total time the first time.

I just did a second full clearance on a woman’s legs Friday. It took 3 hrs and 28 minutes to clear both legs. Most of the hair was very fine and long. She doesn’t shave her legs - it’s all virgin hair. The first clearance took two sessions totaling close to six hours for both legs. I will see her in about three months for a third clearance.

She is not super hairy. Another lady I did was very hairy (from her knees to the tops of her feet) and she needed a little over 7 hours per leg for a first clearance. So it varies as you can imagine.

Hi I just wanted to ressurect this thread with a question about growing out leg hair before getting a clearance. Do you still need to grow out hair for longer than 4 weeks if you have just shaved the legs? or does this just apply to waxed hair?

If you want to go for the ‘wait and clear’ strategy then yes, whether shaved or waxed you need to wait at least 3 months. I think for the legs, even longer is better. Just be sure that whoever is treating you can kill those telogen hairs otherwise it will be a waste of your time and money.

If you have shaved hairs, most practitioners would be just fine with working on them 3 days after your last shave.

thanks stoppit and James. I’m hoping to get a full initial clearance on the lower legs. Will this be achievable growing the hair out for 6 weeks prior (Hair in this area has only been waxed once over a year ago)? or would I need to wait the 3 months recommended?

If you intend to travel long distances to have marathon sessions, you should not shave, or your electrologist not have much to work. Although you can always use the trip for sightseeing and excursions.

I just did a leg case on Friday and Saturday where the client had not shaved for two weeks. There was more than enough hair and I was able to see the telogen hairs barely peeking out of the follicle and treat them as well. I lacked about an hour or two clearing the whole leg from ankle to knee before she had to go. Clearing one leg on this particular client will take anywhere from 12 to 14 hours for me using Synchro thermolysis.

I am okay with shaving, but I am glad she had as much growth available for treatment. Kept me very busy.

Cheshire, there is no need for you to wait at all, especially with Summer approaching. As you have only waxed once in the past year, most of your growth is already on the surface. Best wishes for a speedy job!!
