Laser Setting for Various Body Parts - Male

Hello all;

I am in my late 20s and have light olive skin (I have not been in the sun since last summer).

My hair is black and I would like to get a sense of the settings I should be looking to get on various body parts.

Please let me know the mininum settings and the IDEAL settings for the following body parts (assuming I want complete removal):

Chest
Small patches of hair on shoulder
Small patch of hair on tricep
Back of Neck
Beard
Front of Neck

Also, please specify which laser you recommend

Please feel free to private message me too

Dear Hang 10,

I tried to send you a PM, but it failed. So, here it is “in the open.”

Are you in S. California? If you are, I would like to offer you some free electrolysis — if you are also doing laser. I would like to clear off a shoulder or some other area, and then have you compair that treatment to any laser.

I’m in Santa Barbara and have been doing electrolysis for 30 years (I was also a surfer, but I could never hang 10, even though I had a 9’6" Yater “Spoon.” I could hang 5 though! Now I kayak.)

Just an offer, I would like to do a little side-by-side test and let you (and Hairtell) see the results.

Post photos of the areas. Body part locations except maybe the face do not influence settings. You say “light olive skin” but that’s hard to judge accurately even on photos, so you might be skin type III and Alex laser can be used on you, or you’ll need a Yag. For an Alex laser look for Candela or Synosure MPX which both have largest spot size. Settings to look for 18mm spot, 16 joules (at least) and 3ms low pulse-width. I’m not familiar with Yag settings so I’ll leave that for others.

Other thing to consider is that you say small patches on your shoulders and triceps–both of these specific areas have risks of induced laser hair growth as possible side effect for males. Other areas you listed are fine to treat. If you have small hair patches like you describe then electrolysis might be a better option, especially on face area because I don’t see many people reporting happy results for laser beard removal.

I wish this were a reality.
I would like to join this project. Some European voluntary?

Dr. Gorgü, if you read this, take note for future study!!!

  • “Light olive” is not specific enough. There is also underlying pigment. Please read our FAQs below and figure out your skin type on the Fitzpatrick skin chart. Laser type depends on your skin type and settings vary across machines.

  • Results don’t depend by body area. They depend on the type of hair you have. Laser ONLY works on coarse dense growth. We don’t recommend treating patches on your shoulders and triceps because that can induce MORE hair. Those hairs should be treated with electrolysis, not laser

  • Beard is difficult to treat. You need someone very experienced to avoid patchy results.

  • Michael, if you’re going to do this, do half of the chest or another area that laser works on because the hair is coarse there. The hair on his shoulders shouldn’t be treated with laser in the first place.

I’d really like to do two underarms. This is a perfect area for laser and electrolysis. Now this would be a great “contest.” Such a test would require two undisputed operators to avoid the “yes — but” questions. You know, “well maybe the operator didn’t know what he/she was doing.” It always happens. In Holland we used to call these people the “ja-mars.”

Underarms would be perfect for this.

Maybe contact Bryce on this forum? He sort of did a similar experiment himself and he’s in LA. Maybe he can pick another small area for this project. And he’s familiar with good lasers and settings, so you can be sure that you’re comparing apples to apples, i.e. good electrolysis treatments to good laser treatments.
