I am currently living outside the us, I found a laser practitioner who has trained in Europe and worked in the us, and has 8 years of experience. But practically none with my skin type. What kindof laser should they be using with me? & is there a particular setting or something I should make sure they’re aware of, would you guys recommend not going with them because of this? The only other option for me is someone else but they only have one year of experience but they have worked on a few type 5 skin types. Is there anything I should lookout for interms of what laser they use on me or settings etc.
I am prone to hyperpigmentation so I’m nervous about my treatment
I am going to start by saying i am not a laser expert. as an electrologist however i do understand some things about laser that many consumers may not.
With skin as dark as type 5 I do not believe there are any safe or effective laser for that skin type, but it would most likely be ND-Yag if a laser was suitable at all. Personally, I think the risk of damage to the pigmentation in your skin and the potential for burning on such highly pimented skin would not be worth any potential limited benefits.
Edit: If you’re lucky it’s possible Nora may lend her expertise here.
Firstly, customers must understand that to obtain REAL permanent results, their follicles need to become … and in your case you follicles may be hyperpigmented temporarily as part of the process to get actual permanent result.

I cannot answer you whether optical therapy will effectively work for u since I need to see all of the below, not just any one of the following:
- your skin color
- your hair diameters AND
- your hair density
We can not give settings without Seeing you. An NDYAG laser would be appropriate.
I am both an Electrologist (1991) and a Laser specialist (2002). I have worked with many brown skin types and have gotten great results without burning or hyperpigmentation using Laser. The only Laser you can use is a 1064 nm yag. I have treated bearded faces, underarms, bikini lines and legs. I just saw a client whom I did a Brazilian on over 4years ago. It was just a touch up appointment as she estimated her reduction was about 90%.
For brown skin types, the hair is usually very black and thick. An experienced technician will known that the energy absorption will be high, so low joules and wide open pulse widths are needed. My brown skinned beauties actually need less treatments than my light skin clients with dark hair. The hair thickness makes a huge difference. For fine dark hair on any Type of skin…it’s a big No to Laser.
Gosh guys, I had no idea we has so many laser practitioners here on hairtell currently. Great job!
