Laser Hair Removal Over Mole Questions

Hi all. I’ve been getting laser hair removal on my calves/knees, underarms and entire torso/chest abdomen. Usually we cover all of my moles and freckles with white UV safe stickers but this last time, we forgot halfway through my laser tech doing the legs (We started with legs) and she hit a few freckles and one mole on my leg with the laser passes.

I have found a lot of conflicting or confusing stuff regarding lasering moles and freckles. The only thing I have really found is that is fades them over time if you continue to laser them but I was concerned on whether or not it can turn the mole(s and or freckles) cancerous? I asked my laser tech if it was okay and she seemed pretty lax about it she said it should be fine we only hit it this one time and to not freak out over it. We covered everything after that and will continue to do so but I’m just not sure. I guess seeking a little reassurance is all lol

A few months ago I also got opinions from my derm and a second opinion from another derm and one of them said (After examining all the moles on my body) that these should be safe to laser OR electrolysis if I ever want to because they appear to be non cancerous (I know that is going based off of visual and not biopsy though…) and the other derm said to avoid all moles or freckles/pigment ALWAYS when it comes to laser just because it makes it impossible to tell indicators of skin cancer progression but that it shouldn’t suddenly make your mole cancerous which makes sense.

tl;dr I feel like i messed up chat am I gonna be okay lol I don’t want my cute little moles and freckles to disappear after one treatment w the laser to em :sob:

You’ve summarised it perfectly. There is no evidence or scientific basis for laser hair removal to cause a mole to become cancerous. Skin cancers are overwhelmingly caused by mutation from cell death as a result of UV radiation, and laser hair removal devices don’t emit UV.

Your second dermatologist is correct as to why cosmetic clinics are cautious if or when treating around moles and pigmentation, but I don’t agree with the logic that moles, freckles or pigment should never be lasered. Pigmentation removal is a very basic treatment that both cosmetic and dermatology clinics offer, and this is mostly achieved with lasers (though different to laser hair removal devices). It is, however, important that a doctor signs off on any moles or large pigmentation that you want removed.
