Laser Beard Removal--Horror Stories

So, I’ve seen this guy’s story posted on lots of consumer awareness sites and youtube, and I don’t know what to make of it.

I’ve been considering laser hair removal for my beard. I don’t like wearing facial hair, but even after I shave, it looks like I haven’t. Add to that sensitive skin, and it’s more of a hassle every time I do it. (No, I’m not a shaving noob, I shave with a real double edge razor, a shaving brush, and real shaving cream. It was world’s better than using a Mach3, but it still sucks.)

Back to business, we have something like 23 pages of people saying how laser hair removal on their beards has all gone wrong and horrible, that successful treatments have been on transsexuals using hormones to inhibit regrowth, etc–All adding up to the point that laser hair removal is not a good option for non-transsexual men. Now, I understand that this sample consists almost entirely of people who have had trouble with laser beard removal and are looking for sympathy. Still, I’m wondering if there isn’t a real grievance to their story besides being misled by clinics, poor laser settings, etc.

What’s the story from the perspective of people who have had successful hair removal for beards or from people who do this professionally? Is an unappealing checkerboard face the inevitable result of laser beard removal?

Patchiness has to do with equipment and technique used. It is quite easy to get rid of that with 3-4 additional sessions. We have never had anyone have patchiness from laser hair removal that was not resolved permanently with additional sessions. It is important to vary the equipment and wavelength used in order to get the optimum results.

We recently had a new customer come in with Zebra like marks of patchiness on his face. I personally treated him EVERY TWO DAYS with different lasers and settings. 30 days post his 4th visit, his hair is growing evenly and has thinned out considerably.

This person went to a known clinic with a high turnover of uneducated employees and was treated by subpar lasers. No one is disputing that male facial hair is difficult to treat, but all that means is that a VERY experienced person has to treat it with the right machine and settings. There are success stories by men who are NOT transsexual on this and the other hair removal forum. They do exist. The problem is that most men come to post here AFTER they went to inexperienced clinics for treatments. You don’t really see negative posts here from those who went to someone great from the start.

If your goal is getting rid of the shadow and irritation and not getting rid of the entire beard, it’s definitely possible when everything is done correctly. I would also recommend a Yag laser with a large spot size for this type of goal.
