Laser and Pregnancy

Hi everyone! I’ve been doing laser hair removal for quite a while now (few yrs). Im very light skinned and had light hair to begin with which is why it’s taking me so long. On average I’m having good results. However, my hubby and I want to start trying to have a baby and I do not want to continue with laser. What do I do in the meantime? Do I shave? Or do I wax? My tech says to shave and waxing makes it worse, but the other tech says to wax and shaving makes it worse… which is it?? I don’t know who to listen to. I’m so nervous that my hair will all grow back again.

How long are your intervals between laser treatments at this stage?

Hi vika,

Laser is only appropriate for dark and coarse hair. If you have light hair, it’s not going to work. Period. It’s not a case of doing it for longer and you will get results.

Laser is dependent on the hairs absorbing the Laser energy to generate heat in the follicle to damage the cells. Light hairs can never absorb enough energy to do this. Well, they might but the settings used would burn your skin.

On which body areas are the treatments? If it’s the face, shave. If it’s the body, shave or wax.

However, be prepared for most of the hair to come back over the next 9 months as I doubt the treatments have eliminated any or very little hair. On top of that, pregnancy can stimulate further hair production, so it may increase. I would not wax or shave (or shave very little) so you can analyse how much of the hair comes back.

I would not recommend continuing with Laser after but you need to see for yourself that it’s not working first. Electrolysis is the method of permanent hair removal you need.

Stopit, I am glad you chimed in. These were my thoughts, but I am not a laser pro. It also seems, that this lady has had a few years of treatments already.

Thanks for the response. I’ve been doing laser since 2005, however, I only began with one body part at a time. I have to say though that my underarm hair have completely gone away. My lower legs and inner thighs have too. My bikini is okay… the hair is alot less then it was and my lower back isnt too bad either. My problem is my arms. The hair hasnt gone away completely. I wish I knew the name of the machine they were using or what type it is, but I dont know. Eventhough my hair is light, it still has a little bit of color. But I still don’t know if I should shave or wax during pregnancy.

Also, my intervals between full body treatments are 4-5 weeks.

So you are still treating the underarms and other areas that you began in 2005/2006/2007?

Is the hair too fine and light at this point?

Sorry for the late response, I was away.
Yes, I am still treating all the areas I started in 05/06/07. I have a set dollar amount for full body so i figured it couldnt hurt. My hair is very fine and very light at this point which is why its so hard for the laser to take it now because it barely notices it…its too light in color.
But in any case… will shaving or waxing make it worse for the next 9 months… I really dont want to start from square 1 because I put in sooo much money over the years.

This is what many ex- laser clients say - their out of money and they are still not finished. Yes, you can wax and or shave. I don’t know how you will respond over the next nine months to waxing or shaving. Just do it with the intent of getting this finalized with electrolysis after the baby is born. I assume there will not be a huge difference.

I found this old thread while looking for some information about regrowth after getting pregnant. I am in middle of my legs (3), underarm(2) and bikini laser(1) treatments. I plan to get pregnant next year.

Which of these areas are good candidate for regrowth because of pregnancy?

It seems from my internet search that almost all and some more hair come back at bikini. Is that true?

Will it be wise to wait until after having all my babies to get laser on these areas?

No one can predict this for you. There is a good chance that nothing will happen. But everyone’s hormones are different and react differently to pregnancies.

Thanks for responding LAgirl. I have read more people complain about bikini/underarms regrowth because of pregnancy than legs. I am thinking to continue with legs but wait for bikini treatment until after having all the kids. If anybody has an input/opinion/advice about it please share.

Btw, can you please add your skin type and type of laser used to your signature? Settings don’t mean much without knowing that info.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have added that info to the signature.

Thanks. Are you sure you’re a type IV? Average Indian skin is typically darker. Those settings seem to indicate that as well. Are you seeing good shedding on all areas? Why are they using a smaller spot size on bikini and underarms?

I am going to reply to your question my treatment history thread. I don’t want to hijack this thread anymore.
