Just had my consultation appointment I'M AFRAID

Ok I have mentioned before I am a black dark skinned male.

First she takes make back saying we can get started today. I was like hold up lady we are just going to do a test at most. She was like cool. So here are some of things I got from her.

YagLaser 1064nm(whatever this means). 18mm spot size and start me out at 16j. She did a test spot it had a little sting, but didn’t really hurt so I’m guessing I need to have them go higher.

Things that scared me:
I was expecting the head doctor, the guy who is face of the place, was doing it not one of his goons.

She was ready to treat me today when I wrote down on the paper that I have gotten cold sores in the area that’s being treated.(I need to be on the medication 1st right.)

Ask her has she done any guys my skin type didn’t really get a straight answer but said she has done a lot of black women.

I asked how long has she been doing this her answer was “I have been here since December.”

It only cost a total of $100 per treatment.(That’s too cheap right? It’s like I’m getting the generic).

Please tell me it can still work out.

O, I would like to mentioned that the young lady had a little bit of a mustache going when you look very closely. That’s like going to a dentist and his breath stinks. Just threw me off a bit.

The cost isn’t my concern for you ($100 sounds fine to me). My concern is that someone who has only used this laser a few MONTHS will be treating the most difficult area on the most difficult skin type!! You can’t request someone with more experience than that?! This is not an area that will tolerate even moderate levels of incompetence. D:

I dunno the standard joules on a Yag laser, but that sounds low to me based on what I’ve overheard around the forums. LAgirl would know for sure if she’s around. What was the pulse width? That is an important factor in determining if the settings are right.

Aw, don’t be mean about her mustache. Women’s faces are not appropriate for laser (it causes more hair to grow much of the time instead of reducing it). Unless her mustache was dark and coarse like a full-grown man’s mustache, she CAN’T remove it with laser. Her only option would be electrolysis (which she may not even know about because it’s not “trendy” enough).

So of all the things that are wrong with this scenario, her facial hair is the least of the problems. :stuck_out_tongue:

Allow me to say that hair removal professionals have a certain problem in common with brain surgeons. When you want to have the work you do, done on you, who do you go to? You can’t work on yourself!

You think YOU have a hard time screening hair removal specialists, how do you think OUR screening process works?

It’s very rare that the doctors themselves do the treatment. 99.9% of the time a technician will do it, as it should be. They work with it all the time, not the doctor.

Am I missing something? Did you write what area you’re getting treated? I’m confused when you ask if $100 is too cheap, it’s too cheap for what? Legs yes, underarms too expensive, forearms normal, etc etc lol.

edokid it’s going to be the face. Sides are $50 and and under neck is $50.

Since it will be cheap the question is do you guys think it will be a bad move to let the lady treat me to test it out. She has to learn somehow. I figure with you guys giving me advice I could tell her what I would like the settings on.

I’m going to have to call b/c I forgot what some of the stuff means on this paper she wrote on.

YagLaser 1064nm, 18mm spot size, 10ms(?), 16j, 40DLD(?)
I just asked for spot size and joules.

Yea her mustache was not bad seen it on girls before. She was a blonde and it was light blonde hair. You had to be close to notice it. I’m sure she has no problem getting men she was not bad looking at all.

If the machine is a Yag and has an 18mm spot size, I assume this is either a GentleYAG or GentleMAX. We need to know the pulse width since it’s adjustable on the Yag. It sounds like it’s 10ms, which is fine. 16J is not bad either for a skin type VI since max is 30J. Of course, I’d want someone experienced who know how high they can go without burning because those aren’t that high either.

However, I don’t get the sense that this person knows what they’re doing from what you said. Experience is really important. Also, why not do a test spot?

Most doctors don’t treat themselves. It’s usually nurses and techs.

That price is decent. You’re not treating a large area.

Is your hair dense and coarse btw?

Blond hair can’t be treated with laser, especially finer hair on women’s faces. Maybe it doesn’t bother her. If I had blonde hair, it probably wouldn’t bother me either

Edo: he’s getting his face treated near his mouth area. He mentioned it in another thread, that’s the only reason I knew.

Odi: I agree that techs are often the ones who use the laser instead of the doctors (doctors don’t do great jobs in my experience anyway), but this tech has only had experience since DECEMBER! She’s brand new. And the male face is the hardest area to treat, and his skin type is sooo tricky, plus he has cold sores. That is why the technician he mentioned is not someone I personally would ever get treatment from in that situation (Legs, sure. But not my face or delicate areas).

LAgirl I do have coarse and dense hair on the areas I want treated on my face. The hair on my neck is hard and rough but I just don’t have a lot that grows there but the ones that do cause problems sometimes.

I was willing to put out as much as $3000 for my face. So with the price and the help of you guys don’t you think it would be ok for me to test her performance out for the 1st couple of treatments?
I had her do a test spot under my chin. I need to wait 3 weeks for results right?

I don’t think it’s cheap, I pay $75 for my full face and neck with upper lip at my clinic. I find that’s cheap but they’re amazing there. My first clinic I paid $200 but $100 for cheeks and neck is fine with me.

I would wait and see what happens with the test spot. My main concern with this lady would be whether she can overlap properly to cover the entire area you want treated well so that you don’t end up with patchy results.

Ok LAgirl. Well if all goes well should I have her up the joules on it and to what? It didn’t really hurt at all just a little pinch. For pain I think I could handle more but yeah I need to see how the skin handles it first.

Well, I wouldn’t just increase the settings randomnly. They should test to see what your skin can handle safely. The higher they can go, the better of course, as long as it’s safe.
