Is it supposed to hurt THIS much?

I just had my 6th electrolysis appointment on my chin and upper lip. I’m no baby, but wow-eee, this s*&% kills!!! My question is, should it hurt THIS bad?

I’ve taken all the advice I’ve received (no caffeine, lots of water, ibuprofen before, numbing cream 45 mins before (LMX)) but nothing seems to work.

Part of the problem is my electrologist, who I am not happy with at all (or maybe it’s me, since this is the first time I’ve ever done this). The first couple of sessions she said nothing as tears were pouring down my face. She said, “You’ll get used to it” or “Just don’t drink caffeine”. I told her I didn’t think I could go through with it, that a year of this could not possibly be worth it. It hurt so much, my body would nearly convulse.

Finally, one week, she used some type of cream (not sure what it was) and it worked better. The next time, I asked her to use the same cream, and she had no idea what I was talking about. She said she never uses creams on her patients. (This is a general trend about her. She never remembers my name when I come in or what part of the body I’m getting work done on. She always asks me the same questions when I go there only to ask them again the next time I come. I’m all about making people feel comfortable through small talk, but come on…)

She never once said, “Hey, why don’t you try this cream” or “this is something that works for other patients”. I did the research myself, and bought my own cream (LMX). Neither the pharmacist nor the box could tell me exactly how to use it, so I put a small amount on (considering it was so expensive, I thought that was all I would need), and when I got to my next appointment, my electrologist simply said, “You didn’t use enough”. She seems completely disinterested in me, and I’m happy to be leaving her. The physical part of the procedure is important, of course, but the general feeling is as well, and I feel like nothing more than a number to her. Also, she wants to leave all decisions up to me, when I’m not sure. SHE is the electrologist. For example, I’d like my breasts done as well, and she suggested doing some laser first before doing electrolysis. Sounded good to me. Every time I ask her what is going on with my chest, since she never asks me, she asks what I want to do about it. I want the hair gone, is what I want. Isn’t that what I’m paying for?

Okay, I’m done ranting. Thanks for letting me get that out.

Having said all that, is it possible that for some people it’s just going to hurt no matter what (and I’m not talking about minor discomfort here)? It is excruciating, and there is no way I can continue this for another year (I’m only 2 months in). What else can I do, or will nothing work?

Finally, I would like to switch electrologists (I am currently going to Dana at Corlase). I’m moving to the Chapel Hill area in North Carolina. Any suggestions for people in the Chapel Hill/Duram area? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!!!

The good news first. Breasts/nipples are easy to work on with electrolysis and done very quickly as compared to other areas. And, laser is a lot of money for an area that generally does not have that much hair.

If you are not comfortable with your electrologist, by all means find someone else!!! I don’t think you should feel rushed or like a number.

And the bad news. I believe that electrolysis just hurts some people. I am one of those. We are all different and perceive things differently. It only makes sense that some people are comfortable and others hate it. Using ice helps tremendously, but slows things down a lot. Try to find someone that will use flash thermolysis or picoflash. What is your electrologist using now?

It is possible for some people to just have a very low tolerance for electrolysis, even when other pain is tolerable, and vice versa.

There is only one licensed electrologist in Chapel Hill. (There is one listed in the yellow pages under the electrolysis heading that is NOT licensed.) Her name is Linda Anderson. She is in a dermatologist’s office, and does laser.

In Durham, Thelma White at ABC’s of Skincare http://abcofskincare.com/

You can also contact the North Carolina Board of Electrolysis Examiners for a list of who is licensed in a particular area, 336-856-1010 or [email protected]

She has offered that if you let her know that I sent you, she will give you a free sample treatment and consultation, after which, you can either go on to do more, or call it quits.

Definitely kick this electrologist in the ass. Glad you are finished with this scene and now you have some good suggestions from the pro’s for getting on board with someone who is not only skilled, but compassionate.

I would not hesitate to let this “practitioner” know what you are doing and why. She doesn’t deserve the feedback, but maybe she will learn something and better herself.

There is help for you. A good electrologist can make a treatment tolerable and deadly (for hair only) at the same time.

I agree it hurts. I have very high pain tolerance, but it brings tears to my eyes when shes working around my nose. Id rather have my root canal done than do this, but one look in a mirror, and its worth it. I just wanted to tell you that you can buy LMX on ebay for 9 bucks. You said its expenssive and thats why you are using it sparingly. Its only 9 bucks plus shipping for 4 % Lidocain (ElaMax) on ebay.
Good luck.

I just ordered some LMX 5% for one of my clients who has very little tolerance for electrolysis under the nose area. The hairs are bigger than usual after years of waxing and tweezing, so I do need to use more energy, so I can feel for her. My client pays what I pay for the LMX as I don’t intend to profit off of this. I show her the receipt and she pays for it herself and everybody is happy.

She could order it herself as anyone can, online or with a phone call, but I always give the client a choice and they usually accept my offer to do this. Maybe your electrologist can help you out, too.

I haven’t ordered a topical for a long, long time because usually, I can find enough levels on my epilator that work to make a treatment in sensitive areas very tolerable, but when it hurts and nothing works, it’s time for an anesthetic.

HEy - for me it DiD hurt that much too! I posted about the convulsions as well! I think that’s unnecessary, esp since my skin scabbed the time my body was sweating and convulsing.

My second lady tried thermolysis with an older machine (same mach as first lady ) and put it on the lowest poss. level and it was still too much, with anesthetic. I was jumping. I also had taken two aleves, and had no caffeine.

Anyway, she said some people toleralte galvanic better. I have done that twice for upper lip, bc although its SLOW. I can take it, and it will work .

But, I understand that a good computerized machine can make thermolysis more tolerable, so I am going to try again. I bring up galvanic as an alternative method that might just keep you hairfree while you find a tolerable thermolysis person

just wanted to let you kow that you arent alone, and I have found tolerable method and hope to find a faster tolerable method soon! Keep looking!
