Is it safe to do electrolysis over a tattoo?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get a tattoo on my leg but wanted it to have less hair first. I’ve done one less than stellar laser session but was going to do 1 more then get a tattoo (talking 3 inches by 2 inches or so). I know obviously I can’t do laser over it, but was thinking I’d do laser around it then do electrolysis over the tattoo to keep the length the same. Providing the person is good, is it safe to do electrolysis or could it mess it all up? It’s just going to be black.

If you wait at least 90 days after the tattoo to do electrolysis, you should be fine. Of course, it would be optimum to have the area cleared prior to tatooing.

Don’t worry though, I had a client who had a beautiful woman tatooed on his leg, only to realize that when his hair grew back after shaving it for the tattoo, she looked like a werewolf. Together, we cleared out all the hairs in the area of the tattoo, and she is full body bare now.

Funny thing, the effect is that the tattoo looks more 3-D, as she seems to be litterally on his leg, covering up the rug of man hair that is on the rest of his leg.

Haha that’s funny. I’d like to wait until the hair is all gone but that will take awhile. I don’t mind having some hair there though, it’s just a fleur de lis I’m going to do so def doesn’t matter if it has hair on it! I’d for sure wait the 90 days before electrolysis. I don’t have super hairy legs though so it may be fine as is but wanted to check. Thanks!

If you want the hair removed just in the tatoo, you may want to get the scetch put on, and then have your hair remover take out the hairs in that area, and then, your artist will also have an orientation settled for the final tat. This way, you will have a cleared area, and the skin can heal before you do the tattoo, and then, later, the amount of hair will already been reduced in the area by about 20%.

Well the thing is I want the hair removed everywhere, but being that it’s my legs I’m not really looking to be 100% hair free, just a bit of a reduction is all. It was more that the hair on the leg grows so slowly that by the time I do say 3 or 4 laser treatments it’s going to be like a year before I can get it done. That’s a good idea though so I may look into that, otherwise I think I’ll probably do laser in a couple weeks and just do the tattoo. I may not even need to do anything on it after so we’ll see. Thanks!

If you are doing LASER on the leg already, then you will not need to do what I said about the stencil. Later, you won’t be able to do LASER over the Tattoo, but you WILL be able to continue the hair removal in that area with electrolysis.

Good Luck

Recently I’ve worked the electrolysis on an old tattoo (the Playboy bunny with bow tie). I warned my client that the tattoo could be affected in the form of white dots that perhaps she would have to undergo some tweaks to plug the gaps targets (the tattoo is black). Fortunately that was not necessary. The tattoo has not changed in the density or uniformity of color. Hopefully, she would allow me to present the picture of the result, but I fear she will not agree, someone could relate to her with the tattoo.
