IPL leg hair removal question.

hey every one,

Well i am a swimmer and i am 19 years old and i am considering leg hair removal beacuse i have thick black hair on my leg and it takes to long to shave for competitions.
I have a couple of questions.
first there is no laser hair removal where i live only ipl.
I went to the doctor who runs the clinic and she explained to me how the procedure works.
The ipl machine they use is the Quantum.
I am skin type III or VI one of those not completly sure witch one.
Anyway i do not want 100% hair removal on my legs i simply want like a 60% removal, and the hairs growing back thinner and lighter in color.
Dr. safari also offerd me a test patch and told me to return in 4 weeks. It has been 2 weeks since than and 80% of the hair on my testpatch are gone and the remaining 20% look like I just shaved that area.
My mum also used to be a doctor and perform laser hair removal but she is retired now.
She dosent know alot about ipl but one thing she told me is that the procedure has to hurt. If it dosent hurt it only puts the hair to sleep and if it does hurt that means it acctually destroys the hairs that can be destroyed.
My question pretty much is, how many treatments to you rekon i need to achieve the results i want and if they are achievable.
Dr. safari also had ipl leg hair removal done on herself and its been 1 year and she says that she has a couple of hairs growing back but they are light and thin.
But i am a male and light thin hairs would not bother me at all.

This sounds good for you. I would go for it and get the recommended number of treatments. It should hurt, your mommy is correct. I think this is a great thing for all you athletes out there.

I do have a male to female client who had several IPL treatments in England and her legs look fabulous and have remained stable for a couple years so far. I am totally removing the rest of the hair with electrolysis and those hairs remaining are soft and very light. You won’t need these kinds of hair removed with electrolysis because you are not seeking total removal. You can shave the remaining hair, but that will only be every two weeks probably. What a good deal!

The comments on this website lean toward having a true laser do the work, but I have seen some very nice results with an IPL on my trans girl and she had very, very, very heavy leg hair growth.

It sounds like your choices are limited and your test patch results are hopeful. Go for this and let us know about your experience and outcome.

  • Where are you located? We definitely have many recommendations for London clinics for example with good lasers. Since you only need treatments once every 10-16 weeks on the legs, I would go out of my way to get the best treatments possible, especially since this won’t be cheap on this large area.

  • The results of the test patch sound fine. Of course, there is no way to tell if the hair is gone permanently. That’s often the issue with IPL. Many complain that the hair comes back later.

  • Your mom is sort of correct. It definitely has to hurt if the settings are high enough, but shedding is definitely also an important aspect. Using high settings, as high as your skin can handle safely, is very important in achieving permanent results.

  • The hair won’t turn a different color, but they will get finer. For 60% reduction, you’ll likely need around 3-4 treatments spaced 10-16 weeks apart.

  • Please realize that since you’re only 19, your body hasn’t developed all the hair yet. So you’ll likely need touchups later in life when new hair develops.

I leave in New Zealand and I am at uni the only way to get laser instead of ipl is Auckland witch is 14 hours away from where i leave.
The other option is caci clinic witch is like 160km away but they advise vpl instead of laser hair removal for legs they say patients have better results from ipl than laser hair removal.
So ipl is my only option.
i was wondering if you might know if Quantum is a good ipl machine.
And yes i know some people say that all theire hair grows back but isent it beacuse if you use ipl hair removal on thinn hair it makes it come back thicker.
And one more question after having a procedure like ipl does all the treated hair fall out and all the hair that couldent be killed in that session grows back, or only the hair that is in the treatable phase falls out.
Beacuse on my testpatch not all the hair has fallen out just 80% the other 20% is still there but it looks like i trimmed it. Its been 2 weeks exactely since the testpatch so shouldent all the hairs be gone or does it sometimes take longer than 2 weeks for all the hairs to be gone.

All treated hair should fall out, no matter what phase it’s in. It takes up to 3 weeks for shedding to complete.

No, your above assertion is not true. Those are two completey different concepts. Using either true laser or IPL on fine hair can stimulate more growth on some areas in some people. But IPLs in the way they work compared to laser have more potential for side effects and since they’re not as powerful, more potential for lack of results or regrowth (i.e. not killing the hair, but just damaging it temporarily).

Quantum is a standard IPL. If I would go with an IPL, I’d at least use Palomar.

Btw, I just put in “NEw Zealand Laser Hair Removal” into Google and came up with pages of results. I think you have more options than you may realize. Example: http://yellow.co.nz/search.ds?what=Hair+Removal&where=New+Zealand&newSearch=true

I would not go with IPL as well. Laser is much better for the long term. The fact that most of the hair have fallen on the patch area means nothing…it will return, probably thinner, but you will get it back unfortunately.

Try to find a real laser in your area, I am sure there are some…
