How to help someone who had poor results

So, as some of you know I often post to Reddit. I field alot of questions from other transpeople and try and pass on what advice I can about hair removal. The following is an account from someone there.I’m hoping someone here might have a referral that may help them. I’ll admit, I’m completely pissed off FOR this person. They’ve shelled out more money and undergone more treatment that it generally takes to COMPLETE treatment, with 0 results. Please please please someone come up with a reliable and reputable electrologist, somewhere int he vicinity of Whitman Massachusetts. So, their post:

Been at electrolysis for 2 hours a week since May 2014. My hairs are coming back smaller, but they aren’t coming at any less of number. I feel like I’ve been wasting money on this. I feel as though my upper lip is probably permanently damaged too. I don’t know what to do. 150 hours of electrolysis should have reaped some reward by now. I feel like I might be taken for a ride, and with how long this process is, I always worried that no matter who I go to, I could be getting taken for a ride.
Idk. My coworker who had it done said she had a worse beard than I have had. I don’t get what the Hell is going on.

So to fill in some of the details not related in this account, the client in this case was treated by an electrologist that was local in their area. The electrologist claimed to have been treating people for 30+ years, yet, also to never have treated a transperson before. From my discussions with her, it’s apparent she was using either blend or HF modulation ( on seperate occasions) and that the client has seen thinning of the diameter of the hair being removed or reduced bulb or hair root, but tht the density has not reduced one iota in 150 hours of work. I feel so badly they experienced this.

I have talked this over with at least one professional from here, and they and I both agree that such a result could only occur from undertreatment, or possibly inaccurate insertions.I know from personal experience that the energy levels required for transgender hair removal are much higher than that required for a normal cis-female. The client has confirmed to me, that they have been feeling tugging on the hair withdrawl, so this somewhat confirms this theory.

I’m not aware of any hair removal superhero’s from here being located anywhere near Whitman Mass, but I would love to pass on a qualified referral to this person. I really hope someone here can help me come up with a possible resource.

Another sad story of 30 year in business professional plucker who will continue doing what she does best. I can’t imagine having to spend a fortune on 150 hours of plucking and plus get scaring on top.

Contact this school and ask for a referral.

I have done some continuing education with their instructors and think you have a good chance of getting a good referral.

Thank you Arlene I’ve passed that on.

fenix,

I’m really hesitant to call anyone a professional plucker. The electrologist in question reports never to have never treated a trans person before. As someone who treats trans people, I can say hands down that the energy levels required to remove the thicker diameter deeply rooted is much greater than on your average cis-female. Never having treated a transperson before, she likely didnt know this, though, she should have known she wasnt getting a traction free withdrawl of the hair. I guess I think it’s just not an easy thing to do. I do think that the person is entitled to get what they paid for, andI dont think that they have though.I did offer the option to them of trying to educate the electrologist on how to do this effectively, I really hate to think that someone could be in business for 30 years and not care about the treatment they have been paid for . I hope this person gets some satisfaction at some level at any rate. I feel badly they experienced this.

In 30 years of practice she never heard of the concept that larger diameter hair require more energy? You don’t have to treat trans person to know that. And with 30 years of experience this electrologist hasn’t encountered a SINGLE client male or female with more thicker hairs to treat? And with 30 years of experience she could not recognize her own red flags that her treatment approach was not working on the client somewhere between 60 hours and 150 hours of $$$? I don’t feel bad for her lack of experience.
30 year in practice and not knowing how to treat thick hair only says she is incompetent electrologist who wasn’t interested to be better at her craft, who couldn’t care to invest time into furthering her lacking of training. Will she compensate the client for lost year and hard earned money? Or will she blame “Trans hair” and keep the money? …

No answers to any of the above. I’m not at all being defensive of the practitioner, just trying to wweigh all the best options for the person wronged. I will say that I’m of the opinion the person in question should be setting things right, at least financially, just the same as you’ve pointed out, but I’m concentrating my efforts on finding them someone who can help them with their hair problem, because that’s where I think I can best assist them.

Edit: I wouldnt have asked for help for them, if I didnt think such was warranted . I’m just doing my best to get them the most effective assistance that will help them I can, and neither defending nor antagonizing the situation. There’s a very real possibility the electrologist in question could even be a member of this board. I have no way of knowing.I dont do so well when lawsuits start to come into play and dont feel I can make any more assertion about the clients treatment than the client brings to light.

Kinda yanno, I’m saying dont panic. I really need to get embroidered towel for my treatment room that has that on it!

There are many practitioners who can go years, decades, and more without having treated one single hair on a male beard.

They often don’t get to work on them in school, and if they were a part of the “I Don’t Treat Men! Click! Clique” then they never ventured out of their comfort zone to learn that while a female upper lip hair might be note worthy at a setting like .032 over 75, Many men’s first clearance might start work with .068 over 99. If one spent any time plucking (as many TG people do) one might actually need to start out with .120 over 99 on the upper lip (OUCH!) and work their way down from their over time.

There is a difference between stock car racing and formula one racing, but to the viewing public, its all just turning to the left 4 times a minute. Only those doing it know the difference.
