How common are burns?

I live in Texas, where there really aren’t any rules when it comes to laser hair removal. It has been all over the news here that lots of people are suffering severe burns and permanent damage because of the lack of regulation. How much of this is media hype?? Is there a reason to really be concerned?

yes, this is media hype. they need stories. look for someone who knows what they’re doing (there are lots of good clinics in Texas btw, just run a search here using the search feature above for your city) and you won’t have any problems. If you have light skin, it’s not an issue if you do your research so you can judge whether the person treating you is knowledgeable. If you have darker skin, you should be even more interested in finding someone who knows what they’re doing and using a Yag laser in that case. At least on these forums, there are far more stories about people being undertreated (i.e. they are using settings that are too low to produce results because they don’t know what they’re doing and prefer to use low settings to avoid any potential skin reactions).

btw, there is an entire thread on here on this issue in Texas. the media hype is promoted by physicians who are trying to keep the business to themselves by saying that it’s not safe for non-MDs to perform LHR, which is simply not true, and often the complete opposite is true since physicians don’t usually devote most of their time to hair removal specifically like others in this profession do.
