Home IPL after 20+professional laser on face?

hi,
I am hoping for some advice. I hope I have typed in the right sub-topic.

I had vellous but quite heavy indian hair growth on my face but after laser treatment, this turned to coarse black stubble. I had 16 treatments with ND:YAG Epogee Elite. First at the highest pulse available (went up gradually) for coarse hair and then after consulting the doctor who deals with longer pulses, they introduced longer pulses for fine hair and tried that too for a minimum of 8 treatments. Then I had a few more at the coarse settings before giving up!

I have looked into electrolysis, but cannot find anyone who will agree to do the face as I now have hair all the way to the cheeks and eyebrow area.
I had so many treatments, just to maintain it or keep it under control and hoping it would help. Now the clinic (national UK clinic) now declares that laser on fine growth is not suitable and may result in some cases coarse new growth.

I also have underactive thyroid but is under control and had my testosterone levels checked which is fine, just prolactin is moderately high and having tests for PCOS but have no symptoms.

I am currently with a new laser specialist- she tried another type of NDYAG I think a very old model indeed but goes over each area twice instead of overlapping. I was hesitant but my skin only turns slightly red even at the highest 35 pulse settings. (The national clinic used to overlap but I think for time and economy they don’t anymore!)
As that did not make a difference after 2 treatments have turned to IPL and had 2 treatments and can already see some difference and the hair getting finer.

From all the treatments I do have some bald areas - but the area around the cheeks and eyes and of course coarseness bothers me.I just want to get the hair growth realistically sparser and finer so that I can lighten the hair.
At the moment, the hair itself is too thick and the bleach does not take onto the hair and within 2/3 days it seems as if it’s all black again. Very weird!
Waxing or threading, thick regrowth within a week!

So my question is, I cannot afford to keep having more treatments and my current specialist will do IPL till the bulk of the hair is gone and then do electrolysis on the remaining hairs.

In this context, to maintain some kind of hair reduction and even maybe a little permanence, would a home IPL device be okay?

I understand they probably will not be permanent, but to give me a break from professional treatment and my pocket I am thinking to try this and see if I can cope with IPL and then shaving/bleaching the hair inbetween.

I would still have some professional IPL and maintenance when I could afford it again ina year or so…

I hope you can give me your opinion as it isn’t the kind of question many ask!

PS am 29/F/would say sking type 3 as very light Indian with cool features, but could say 4 to be on the safe side. Have light skin and very dark brown and visible and thick hair.
(I have responded well to laser on all areas but the face)

I don’t understand why you can’t find anyone to work on your face with electrolysis. You say it’s because the hairs are up to your cheeks and eyes, but electrolysis was DESIGNED for those areas (to remove ingrown eyelashes). However it IS dangerous to have laser in that area (for all the reasons you already learned).

I vote that you stop with the laser. You really reeeeeally need electrolysis. I’m a big advocate for laser (not IPL), but in your case I can’t recommend either laser or IPL. Any electrologist who says you can’t do electrolysis on the cheek area is lying to you. It will be CHEAPER and SAFER, but not only that, it will be MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE.

I hope you find a good electrologist and that it’s all resolved for you soon.

Here! Here! Good advice.

I only know of one electrologist in my area in the UK,and she says there are the area is far too dense to be treated by her (she only does needle and that transdermal which I’m not sure if it works)
And searched everywhere, the electrologists here are few and far between.
i have found the IPL has reduced the thickness to a more manageable level…
oh well, worth asking!

What area are you in UK?

We have several threads on the forum by people in the UK sharing their electrolysis experiences and recommendations. Run a search.
