since last 2 years, i had a pretty hairy chest…well, i am 17 now and turning 18 in 2 months. i am not naturally really hairy, but when i saw those hair when i was 15, i started to either shave them or use nair creme on them. i have probably done this procedure 7 to 8 times. However, now my hairs on chest and my abdomen is pretty hairy. And yea, i believe i am a good candidate, because i have a light skin tone and really dark hair. i dont want to wax because i want to permenantly remove them. Well, i have some questions. Firstly, is it ok to get hair removal when i turn 18 or should i wait? Secondly, what would you recommend as a good clinic or dermatologist for this treatment in NYC, since its a mile away from where i live. Lastly, i know i will probably need multiple procedures, but what do think is a good price for this, since it a large area to cover?
THANK you, and i will greatly appreciate any comment and help with this situation.
2 recommended places in NYC are romeo and juliette and Lynda the nurse. you can use the search feature on this forum. you’re pretty young, so expect to get more touch-up treatments later as you develop a bit more hair with age. there is nothing wrong with starting now though if you want to do that. price for that area will vary by location, probably $300-500 per treatment and you will need 6-8 to see a pretty difinitive reduction. after that you’ll probably need touch-ups 1-2 times a year.
I just posted on another part of this site and new to this. Basically, I’ve been to Assara and am doing their unlimited lasering for $599 per month. But I have 2 friends that go to Dr. Muller’s office and say they’re also getting good results. I think Muller’s place also uses the Apogee elite.
It’s $599 per month for unlimited treatments. Not sure how they make money charging thsi price, but presumably they’re hoping you treat only a small area or small areas. But I’m milking it for all it’s worth!
can you come in as many times a month as you want and get whichever areas you want done? can you skip a month or do you have to buy in consecutive months?
Hmmm. It is an interesting approach and one that I don’t think is really in your best interest. Unless you can skip months.
But if you have to pay each month, then you are paying more than you need to. For example, let’s say you treat everything on your body and you do it for 10 months. You will have spent almost $6,000 and you will have plenty of hair because you can’t really get rid of hair with a laser in 10 months. It takes much longer, with intervals inbetween treatments.
Now if you can skip months. Say pay $599 this month, treat everything and then come in two months from now, and pay another $599. And do that six or seven times and treat everything. You may break even or even come out ahead over a more traditional approach. Assuming they are still in business.
Well, the good thing is that there’s no commitment. So, one can do it for a few months. Stop. Restart. I just can’t afford to pay the typical $2,000 or so per full-body treatment at some of the other places. (I’m doing this based on a referral I got from a few friends.) Of course if things don’t turn out well, I’ll stop. Again, no commitment. So far, I’m super happy. Will keep you guys posted, though.
I have pretty pale skin, dark brown hair. Don’t know the pulse, but I think it was 18 joules and I think they used a 12mm spot size (but maybe it was 15mm, I just can’t remember).
One bit of advice; I wouldn’t let them talk you into a package deal. When you get serious about getting a treatment, they’ll invite you in for a consult. Don’t let the conversation wander toward package deals. Talk about one treatment, and how you want it to be effective. Talk about power, pulse type, your skin and hair, and take a before photo so you can get clear perspective.
Personally? I would recommend getting one treatment, even if it costs a few dollars more than a group, and see how that goes. Tell them in that you’re paying this amount, you want results. Too many times they go too weak on a first-timer and it does nothing but cost you, and benefit them. This whole business of paying full price for a 25 Joule treatment is like an unquestioned waste that just repeats itself here on this board. Sure they want to be cautious and get you used to the sensation, but I don’t think 25-28 joules has ever burned anybody.
When I look back on my laser experience, what I would do different is that I would just say, ‘Give me a successful treatment. I’ll make a decision on further appointments on what I see.’ And do just that.
I agree, I hate package deals. I wouldn’t be doing this $599 unlimited deal at Assara if they requested that I sign on for a minimum amount of treatments. I can cancel at any time. And so far, the results have been great. But you’re right, if ever there’s a problem, I need the right to stop and go elsewhere. For now, that’s their policy…
Just to clarify, joules are not equivalent among various laser types and laser models. Plus, spot size and pulse setting makes a big different in conjunction with the joules used. Everyone, when you’re looking for setting advice for your skin type etc, please only read those with the specific laser you’re using mentioned.
one question, julia: are you saying that assara laser’s $599/month unlimited deal means that one can laser their WHOLE body?? are there any parts of the body that are not included? are legs included? (i ask because there was another place in new york city that had a similar deal but only certain body parts were included.) if all body parts are included that sounds pretty incredible. pls confirm. thanks.
Yes-- includes all body parts. There was a featured article in one of the new york papers on Assara. Don’t remember if it was insider being interviewed or an industry “expert,” but there was mention that the $599 unlimited deal was designed by the investors behind Assara Laser’s to simply increase sales for franchising purposes. Something about New York City being a “loss leader.” Anyway, the answer to your question is yes; legs are included too…
