Hairy Lady in Distress! UK - Blend Electrolysis?

Hi there, I am SO HAPPY I found this site. There are obviously lots of excellent professionals around as well as real people with real problems!

I´m a 38 years-old woman, of Mediterranean heritage with a very hairy dad and brother, medium-normal mother. My skin can get quite tanned in summer, but living in London there is not a chance of this! It´s usually olivaceous in summer and belly-fish white in winter. My hair is dark, very dark, and thick, very thick.

I had a huge hormonal disbalance in my late teens, when all of sudden LOTS of hair appeared everywhere: I managed to get a proper beard (sides, chin, neck, moustache) as well as thick hairs in legs, arms, some in my chest and tummy, and a horrible bikini line. I have policystic ovaries, 3 or 4 periods per year was normal for me, and have been taking the pill since then which in theory reduces the unwanted hair problem (if this is true I simply do not want to know how would it really be without taking the pill). Add asthma attacks with the need of steroids treatment, and some overweight and you get the whole picture.

I have tried both laser and IPL systems, and have to say that I did notice a slight difference, but after some 15 treatments I simply couldn´t continue paying that kind of money. After that I have also had several courses of electrolysis and have to say that I found it my preferred method for facial hair and it definitely and visibly reduced the number of hairs on my face and neck. I was lucky to have a good professional who worked quickly, effectively and without making any marks. I stuck to the schedules and have only good words for this system, but then I had to move countries. After moving to the UK about 8 years ago and with the difficulty of finding a decent job I simply could not afford to continue my treatment, which I profoundly regret, but life is life and you just take it. I have been plucking or shaving since.

That would be my background, I´m just keeping the emotional part out, because I am aware that all people with this problem know exactly how I feel.

I have 2 questions and I would be very grateful if you could give me a professional answer:

1.- I now want to continue electrolysis treatment, and have consulted a local professional with a system I simply don´t have a clue about. It´s called Blend. As I really only want electrolysis for my face, could you please let me know if this would be the most appropiate system for this particular area?

EPIL-PRO a sound approach to permanent hair removal. Truly non invasive, virtually pain free, no burning, no pigmentation, no pitting, no scarring, safe on diabetics and excellent for transsexuals. THE STEREX ‘BLEND’ MACHINE is the latest form of needle electrolysis, using short wave diathermie and galvanic electrolysis. Disposable needles are used. Prices as Epil-Pro above. It´s about 30GBP for half an hour, which seems to be the normal rate in the area, more expensive once in London. Do you know this system?

2.- Also, for the rest of my hairy body, I was thinking in getting the Silk’n system. That would be for legs, arms, chest, tummy, bikini, bottom… you call it). I know that this is not a permanent system, but as I simply cannot afford any other treatment I am concentrating my budget in getting electrolysis for my face, as it is the part that causes the most concerns and that I feel most ashamed of. If Silk’n keeps the skin in good condition and clear for a few weeks (I get a lot of spots and ingrowing hairs with waxing, apart of the pain) is it something to look at? I know about the Tria, but the head looks impractical with large surfaces. Do you know of any other alternative for large areas?

I look forward to hearing from you and getting some professional advice, as logically the person who is going to do the treatment will always present it as the best option for my problem.

Many thanks, and once again, thank you for keeping this forum open, it really is of great help.

The Sterex machine is using is legit, it is probably the SX-B Blend machine found on this site. It seems to be a fairly common epilator in the UK and Australia as it appears on eBay often. It isn’t technically the latest and greatest epilator but it is a fine machine and she can do good work with it.

There are already threads on this site about the Silkn and you can read others’ experiences, pro and con, with it. If you want to remove some of your body hair yourself, you can buy a used, real electrolysis machine (maybe even the same machine your electrologist is using) for less than the cost of the Silkn, though there are other expenses involved such as needles and vision equipment. As someone who has successfully removed their own hair, and spent hundreds and hundreds of hours doing it, I wouldn’t recommend but if you are really, really determined it might be an option for you.

Dear VickieCNY,

Many thanks for your response, and please excuse my delay in replying, I have been visiting family abroad.

I will start next month with the blend electrolysis . Unfortunately I do not think that I could do this myself, as my sight is not too good and as I need it for my face I’m afraid that I would make scars, so I´d rather leave it to the pros.

I should be getting my Silk’n in about a week and will let readers here know about it. I really just think of it as a non-permanent system I can use at home and that should be painless and cheaper than waxing in the long term, as I got it almost 100GBP cheaper than when I first found it and they are giving 3 lamps with it. Besides, I don´t know other people, but my skin only looks nice for 3-7 days after waxing, then I get all those hairs that broke and come back, then some growing inside and by the 10th day I´m uncomfortable showing my legs again. If I can treat myself every 2 weeks and avoid having to go to the salon and suffering the mess, pain, in-growth and redness of waxing, I´ll be happy enough.

To be honest, what I would really like is being completely hair-free except in those areas where we all want to have controlled hairs. As this is not really possible unless I win the lottery and can afford either laser or electrolysis everywhere… Silk’n it is.

Many thanks for your advice and for keeping such a great forum!

You’re welcome  It is generally recommend that a pro do facial work, due to the difficulty of working backwards in a mirror and trying to watch what you are doing when working so close to the eyes (it really is impractical, believe me, I have tried  )

Did you get it done in London on the face?

Hi Evamar-

I, too, fit your profile (all but no PCOS). I have the Silkn Sensepil and have used it for 4 months. I have had pleasing results in the areas of legs, bikini, underarms and forearms. I have used every week (despite directions to use every 2 weeks) for a total of 16 treatments and stopped 1 month ago and still have hair-free skin. It could all grow back, but for me to be truly hair-free for a month is success to me. My face is another story, as I only entrust that to a professional (I have undergone Laser using Gentelase for one year) and have had great permanent reduction of 90%. My plan is to get what remains done by electrolysis (plus, there are some very light hairs there now that laser cannot treat).

Well, thought I would shar with you and wish you the BEST of luck!!
