When we last talked about this device, I mentioned that I would report back if I found out any more information about it at the 2007 ASLMS conference.
After talking about it to several people and hearing a couple of talks about home devices and eye protection. Here is what I know today.
It is a diode (supposedly), spot size unknown but doubt that it will be more than about 5-7 mm square.
It will reach 35 joules in power. But to do that it will probably need to run at a pulsewidth of 50 to 100 ms which is intrinsic in the nature of a diode laser. It will probably not be very painful.
It will have some sort of sensor to ensure that it can not fire when not against something so as to protect the eye.
It may have a sensor to check skin color to ensure that the power is lower for darker skin.
No one thinks it will do any more than just provide a hair free period.
Price looks to be around $1,200 though I think one will be able to buy them much cheaper on eBay once the novelty wears off.
There is question as to how effective it will be. The FDA rep stated that all they cared about was Safety, Safety, and Safety in approving the device.
I’m excited. For 1200, and something I could use in my own home to induce a hair free period of 9-12 weeks. I am ALL for it. If the FDA approves this device, when do you think it will be marketed in stores? Personally, I don’t see why they don’t let anybody buy IPL’s and Laser hair removal. You can buy guns, flame throwers, but not a little IPL. Weird.
9-12 weeks might be worth it. What about 2 weeks? [/quote]
It only creates a hair free period of about 2 weeks? That would be kind of strange. That would mean the hair was breaking off. If a hair is removed from the root, or sheds, it usually takes 9-13 weeks to grow back in. That is what I noticed from IPL’s and Laser. The hair would fall out, nothing would grow really until BANG about the 11 week mark mainly. Why would this be any different?
When you pluck or wax a hair, it generally takes 4-6 weeks for the hair to come back completely. In some people, the hair recovers in just two weeks. What happens is that the hair follicle is damaged but just a little and takes some time to reform a new hair. But the hair does not generally go dormant.
When one lasers, the energy from the laser will actually shock the hair into an extended dormant period. After a period of time, which can last as short as 2 weeks or much longer, new hairs start to grow and come in. The length of time is somewhat related to the underlying cycle of the area. Woman’s faces tend to have a short cycle, men’s backs tend to have a long cycle. This is the 11 weeks you get.
No one that I know really knows what to expect with this home device. My understanding is that it doesn’t really put enough energy into the hair follicle to cause significant dormancy, but maybe enough to cause the hair and hair follicle to disassociate and let the hair fall out. But if that is the case, the hair will start growing almost immediately.
The question though, was whether $1,200 was a good price to pay for 2 weeks of hair free time?
Probably not, but poor desperate sapps like me will pay for it to see if it works. Hey, it’s retail, you can always take it back. If it really did only induce 2 weeks of hair free period…then it wouldn’t be of any use to me because I’m sure I’d have irritation and it would be pointless.
you can buy lasers or IPL’s. You can buy them on ebay. I was thinking about buying one, but now I’m trying to figure our about renting a laser for the day, like every 6 weeks. You can check out ecplaza dot com and type in laser hair removal and there a bunch of IPL’s for sale in China. There is one person who posted on hairremovalforum dot com about buying one. I tried to create an account there, but it’s not working for me. I wanted to contact her to see how well this machine works. She posted on like April 15. I’m thinking about going to China to get some work done and see how well these IPL’s work.
All the way to China! You are certainly dog-determined. Why do you suppose there are so many IPL’s for sale in China? Do you know the specific names of these IPL’S? I’m thinking these IPL’s would be cheaper than any used one’s sold in the U.S.
How much are these things going to cost? I know in Texas and New York… I think you don’t have to have a license to buy this equipment, but I’m not sure. I would imagine if you were buying an IPL from China there would be no license needed. I would love to have an IPL for home use to zap hairs all over once I get electrolysis completed on my shoulders and such as that is the only area I plan on getting treated.
I don’t understand the laser renting thing…you can actually do that?
