GentleLase J's and spot size

I’ll be going for my first treatment with a Gentlelase for my back and shoulders. I am a type 3 skin, male, the hair is dense and coarse. Can someone explain what GentleLase’s Joules means? I believe they will be using a 18 mm spot size but I don’t understand how the joules work? The higher the number the stronger or the more effective it is provided your skin can tolerate the higher setting? THX.

Joules means power. Your last statement is correct. Are you at least aware that some people have reported laser induced hair stimulation on this area? That does not mean it will happen to you , but at least know this from the get-go.

As long as your hair is dense and coarse, you should get good results with the Gentlelase. 18 mm spot size is the best way to start. If your skin can take it, then I would start with something around 16 Joules and perhaps up it to 18 Joules if you can handle it.

Again, your Practicioner is your best source for evaluating your skin and using appropriate parameters.

Yes I am aware, but my hair is thick, dense and coarse in those areas, so I think I’ll be okay. Would the lightsheer be a better laser for me?

For your skin type, a LightSheer would be okay as long as the person using it, performs expertly. I believe compression is very important with this laser. The GentleLase is a better laser for hair removal, but is usually favored for skin types I and II. Have a close conversation with your practitioner about this to sort through this. Do they have both kinds of laser?
