When the follicle is gone, so is the folliculitis … gone! And, this is one of the beneficial side-effects of electrolysis!
Example: A young guy (real name Brennan) had acne that caused scar tissue build-up mostly along the sides of his neck. I removed the horribly distorted hairs that would ingrow and cause pustules.
We decided to remove all the hair in the area, because doing this would also give him a nice tidy beard. (He had to have a beard, because shaving caused more acne.)
Now that we are finished, there are absolutely NO pustules in the area. The acne is 99% gone from the area (acne is a “disease” of the pilosebaceous unit … and we removed all of them that had hairs). The further benefit was in the greatly diminished scar tissue!
Here’s what happened: The continuing inflammation, caused by electrolysis, was GOOD for the skin in this case. All the healing cells were started up and therefore “went after” the old collagen tissue (scars). The process is called “collagen (or scar) remodeling." Also called “collagen turnover.” This “firing up” of the wound-healing process is at the heart of all “facial resurfacing” procedures, whether they are chemical peels or lasers. (I had a very interesting conversation with Dr. Gold … the inventor of laser hair removal, about “aging the fibroblasts” by over doing continued inflammation. A later post?)
I always recommend that if you have a patient that has “marks” from electrolysis … to go ahead (after the initial inflammation has subsides) and continue to treat the area. Starting up the process will greatly diminish the “marks” (even hyperpigmentation). In this way, you are using the currents to “heal” the skin. (With the hyperpigmentation, the macrophages are stimulated to “eat up” the excess pigment.) This “side-effect” is really wonderful! Maybe we could call this “the healing effect of electrolysis?”
Have other electrologists experienced this as well; care to share your story?
