First Timer - Is this normal? *PICS*

So I have just started with elec. and I asked all the questions I had read on here to ask. She’s been in business for 15 years, everything looked clean, and she told me it would be about 9 months roughly to do my chin and neck. We did an hour treatment. Now, she was using thermolysis and it wasn’t too painful at all. I did notice she used the foot pedal once, twice and sometimes up to 4 times on what I feel like was one hair. I never really feel a ton of pain, but by the 2-4 time its like a popping snap noise, and it feels different. Is that normal?
I have added pics from Day 1 (left) and Day 2 (right) and I am currently uploading Day 3 and then today which was treatment day #2. She could only do 40 mins this time she said and not 60. She said my skin was thick from tweezing (I tweezed for 5 years but stopped as of a week ago, 3 days before my treatment per her request). She said my skin reaction was normal. I have been putting Tea Tree Oil and aloe on it.
She said many of my hairs were shaped like hockey sticks. And she dug around with tweezers a lot and from it felt like, she was maybe trying to lift a hair to the surface?

Here are the pics:

Day 1 and 2
(Day 1 was treatment day and it was 5 hours after treatment)

Day 3

Day 4 (30 mins after treatment)

Based on my own non-professional experience with electrolysis, your skin does seem to be showing more reaction than is normal. That popping noise you heard is sometimes referred to as “blow out” and is probably not something you want happening. Having said that, if she’s having to dig around for ingrown hairs that might explain the excessive swelling and redness. I’m hoping one of the electrologists on here will share their opinion, and correct me if I am wrong.

Hmm… Certainly more reaction than what is normal, maybe watch her if possible doing the electrolysis through a mirror? She may be using heat that is too high or applying heat while the needle is still being inserted, this may explain the popping noise…

Please speak to her about your concerns and hopefully she will be able to help, just take care of your skin and im pretty sure it will return to normal as soon as possible

Do you have any before pictures?

The first couple sessions for hair like yours can be the roughest you will ever have. Soon the skin will settle down , there will be less hair to remove and the hairs will be farther apart.

I like doing total clearance on cases like yours, but I feel confident that I can do that. Other electrologists would choose to scatter their work and revisit the area in a week or two. We are all different in our approach and we do what we know best.

You just stopped tweezing, so EXPECT the hairs to come forth fast and furious over a three to four month period. Don’t get discouraged. You have more hair than you think you have, so push forward.

The reaction is definitely red and noticeable. Perhaps this could have been minimized by using insulated probes or a bigger probe, using a proper amount of energy for the proper amount of time. Tell her about it. Show her the pictures . She may choose a different strategy or she may like what she is doing now for those very coarse hairs. She definitely should ask or you should volunteer information about how you healed.

What aftercare instructions did she advise for you? I like tea tree oil and aloe, but you have got to go easy on the TTO! If you use too much, you will experience prolonged redness and flakiness. Use small dabs and then put the purest aloe vera gel right over top of that.

We all like less skin reaction on facial areas because we know that it is hard to face other people with lots of redness or even scabs. This kind of stuff scares people and it is a bad advertisement for electrolysis!

As hard as we try to minimize a reaction like this, some people have very sensitive skin or they make matters worse by using their own ideas for aftercare. I had a young man recently that was beside himself because he said the electrolysis session I did turned his skin greeny-yellow and he was cracked and red. Turns out, he bought a cheap aloe brand with WATER listed as the first ingredient, alcohol was next and aloe vera was the fifth ingredient, followed by green and yellow dyes. My instruction sheet was specific about ingredients to buy and not to buy, but it probably ended up on the floor of his car after the first appointment. We figured out what the problem was and all was well.

So, it would behoove you to report this to your electrologist, so she can talk it over with you. We are really nice people who want the best for you and we appreciate the feedback from our clients so we can teach or choose a better strategy.
