First laser consulation - Confusing advice

Hi - I have just joined up to the forum after reviewing the threads over the past few months. I have done some reading up on the laser treatments and thought I would go and have a consultation and test patch done. From what I have read here on the forum is that over several treatments the hair will reduce in numbers, colour and thickness leaving the odd dark hair. At the consultant she told me that this is incorrect. She said that laser treatment will only reduce the texture of the hair and not affect the number of hairs. She also said that because I am a male that this wont be permanent as I have higher levels of testosterone than women and that the results the clinics boast about are from treatments on women and not men.

Regardless to her advice I had the test patch. It has now been 8 weeks and I there is a significant reduction in the number of hairs and only a slight reduction in the texture. I might add that the majority of the hairs that have grown back did about 4 weeks after the test patch.

After leaving the consultant I was hesitant about under going several treatments but after seeing how the test patch is 8weeks on I am reconsidering.

My question here is - is she correct? I should probably also add that I am a 26 year old male, type III and the area of treatment is my back and shoulders. The hair is black and course.

Hmm she is completely on the wrong side of things. Laser should not affect the texture of the hair at all. It does not make dark hairs thinner or lighter, it simply destroys dark hairs, meaning that you notice the thinner lighter hairs that you have for the first time in your life… Mostly lasers will not be able to destroy these and the permanent way to get rid of them is electrolysis.

You most probably WILL find that you continue to develop NEW hair over time, as you grow older. I think that is common to both men and women, going through different stages of their lives. But that is no reason not to be relatively hair free now and somewhat hair free in the future.

The hairs which “grew back” within the four weeks after treatment would have been hairs that were either missed, or you did it on your face, where hair cycles are shorter.

It sounds like she was making you hesitant, which is strange as most clinics are happy to give laser treatments a go. Find out what laser she is using, what the settings are, etc.

Goodluck.

If the settings are good, hair will be damaged permanently. If the clinic chooses to be too conservative, then the hair will only be slightly damaged.

Knowing the name of the machine and settings used is very important here. That makes the difference in people’s results. You’ll find by reading the forum that the toughest part is finding a clinic with a good machine AND one that knows how to use it properly.

Your area is also difficult to treat. So it’s even more important to find someone competent and knowledgeable.

Is the hair very dense? Can you post a photo? You can experience MORE hair growth if the hair is not very dense and settings are low.
