Unwanted back hair? Ridding it not so easy

“It can get pretty intense sometimes,” Sue Humes says of removing body hair. “But men never say anything about it.”

Humes, co-owner of Cameo Day Spa, 4930 Illinois Road, does body waxing to remove unwanted hair.

Kari Dietrich, a medical assistant at Dermatology & Laser Surgery Associates, 2930 Lake Ave., explains why.

“Laser works best on dark hair, the darker and thicker the better,” Dietrich says. “It’s attracted to the dark melanin in the hair follicles – the darkness in the bulb. The laser heats it up and that actually destroys the follicle.”

Costs vary as well. Waxing can be done for $100 to $200 a year, depending on frequency and time required. Humes says she can do a man’s chest or back in 30 to 45 minutes for $50.

Electrolysis, usually billed by the hour, can run $25 to $100 per hour. Laser hair removal might be billed by session or by treatment packages, with $500 per treatment session an average price.

Dietrich says a series of five treatments on the back would cost around $2,000.
