Female nape of neck!

I am new to the boards and would like some advice… Luckily I found these boards in time.I was about to sign up for laser hair removal on my upper lip last week - until I read on this forum that it can caused increased hair growth on the face. I have fine, blond peach fuzz around my chin and the last thing I need is for that to grow any fuller.

I have very dark hair on the back of my neck. It is moderately in courseness (somewhere between female leg hair and arm hair), but is very dark (basically black). I tried to post a picture but it seems my camera doesn’t wish to cooperate!

I would like to know how likely laser treatment is to increase hair growth in this area. The salon (Epiderma in Ottawa) specializes in laser hair removal and has an excellent reputation.

Epiderma will most likely tell you that they can’t help you for your chin because you have blond peach fuzz. Even if your hair is very dark on your neck, if it isn’t very coarse then laser will not be too helpful. Laser induced hair growth does not happen to everyone every time they get laser on vulnerable areas. It’s a gamble and it can happen if joules (power) used is too low. Hair follicles are awakened that otherwise would have produced a hair that anyone would notice.

You will need electrolysis. Find a professional electrologist that has invested in modern equipment, good lighting and magnification. I wish you luck.

Yeah i agree just get electrolysis. Unless you’re treating a large area there’s not much point in doing laser. I mean I’m all for laser, and yes electrolysis can treat any area, but if it’s just a small area, you might as well get electrolysis and get 100% results.

I think there’s 2 types of reasons to remove hair, or two types of people at least. There’s the ones like yourself that want it gone for cosmetic reasons and want it 100% gone. Then there’s ones like me that want it gone also for cosmetic reasons, but whether I have it or not it doesn’t make a difference. As in it’s not in areas that people would say oh wow you have hairy arms or something like that. So for me, I don’t see the point in electrolysis because I’m not needing the hair gone 100%, I find it easier to do laser and just hope for the best and have easy sessions. But for people that need it gone, electrolysis is the way to go for smaller areas for sure!

Thank you for your replies.

I am aware that I will need electrolyss for my face. Unfortunately I am unable to make the time commitment right now so that will have to wait…

I am still interested in laser hair removal for the back of my neck. I would do laser it on my entire back but the hair is lighter and finer below my neck area so it wouldn’t be effective. So I am thinking of proceeding with just lasering the back of my neck right now as this area is the darkest and there is a great deal of hair in this area. Electrolysis is not an option as there is too much hair.

PS I’m definitely in the “I would like all non-essential hair gone” boat! If I could get rid of all my unwanted hair, I would do it in a heart beat!

Its terrible because my mother is naturally hair-free. She doesn’t even have to shave her legs AT ALL. They’re perfectly smooth. And she only has to shave her armpits once a month at most.

Me? I’m basically covered in hair…

Life is funny sometimes…

hey young love, i’ve had the lightsheer on my nape twice. i always had a very hairy neck, the hair a mixture of scalp hair and finer hair, growing from the base of my hairline down the sides of my neck, in line with my ear. the first session was at the beginning of february and the second at the end of march. after the first treatment there wasn’t much to treat. i have had very little regrowth and it’s soft (it used to feel bristly a few days after shaving).

i will keep you posted on results, its too early to see right now but it’s looking positive and for the first time ever i am wearing my hair completely up

It is not true that electrolysis is only for small areas. Many electrologists, me and James included, can move pretty fast and effectively to clear a large area, given the newer tools and and modalities available today. What good is laser if you do not have very coarse, dense dark hair? No matter how big or small the area is, if laser cannot “see” the hair then what do you have left to remove the hair? The answer is electrolysis. The hard part is going on the hunt to find a MODERNLY EQUIPPED, WELL-TRAINED ELECTROLOGIST AS CLOSE TO HOME AS POSSIBLE, but if you can find someone good, then electrolysis is also for a large area.

I didn’t say electrolysis was only for small areas. I said if it’s a small area and you’re debating between laser and electrolysis then you would we better with electrolysis since it’s guaranteed. But for much larger areas you’d have more of a decision to make as laser is more efficient.

I was addressing youngglove’s post.

I have hair practically all over. And treating my entire body with electrolysis is realistically not an option. So the more I can treat with laser, the better.

I have opted to go with laser to treat my neck, navel and under arms.

As soon as I have the time/funds I will continue with electrolysis to work on face, breasts, and potentially my back and the remaining areas of my stomach. I have been my hair in these areas is too fine for laser.

The hair around my areola is borderline… and since I have finer hair surrounding that area, I think I might need electrolysis rather than laser on my breasts as well.

We maintain here that the two modalities of laser and electrolysis work well together with laser getting the bulk of the hair IIIIFFFF it is the right kind of hair to get and electrolysis being the net that one falls in when laser can’t do anymore for the client. Electrolysis can see every hair and can be pinpoint selective of the hairs to terminate or the hairs to leave alone.

Both require one to save their funds because both are a financial commitment. I wish you luck.

It’s really impossible for us to judge whether the hair on your neck is coarse enough for laser without a photo. Hopefully, you can get it posted, so we can help.

Yes, for your areolas, I would just do electrolysis because you don’t want to stimulate the surrounding finer hair.

That’s what I thought, too, but mine went by lightening fast. I had a lot, and I mean a LOT, of hair on the back of my neck (I’m a MTF transgender, so it had to come off.) Anyway, after the first 2 hour session, only about half ever came back and I was able to completely clear it with each session. Now it’s completely done, and I am so glad I did it.

I think, were I you, I’d get a good electrologist. It will take less time than you think, and will probably be much easier and less expensive than doing laser.

I concur.
