Extremely thick beard near eyes

Hello Everyone,

I’ve always had a very thick beard(some say I was born with it). Recently it has been progressing closer to my eyes. Once thin hair near my eyes are now darkening, I pluck them for now(the darkest ones)but is very time consuming. I love my beard, but it’s getting out of hand, I feel like a wolfman and at all times I have a shadow making my face look grey.

Is it true that plucking hair stimulates growth? I’ve been doing that with the darkest hairs near my eyes, and it seems as if all they do is get darker, but I also ready that removing hair doesn’t stimulate growth(old wives tale?)

I’ve gone to a local place(lunaris L.A.). The doctor did a test on my neck portion, my skin did not have a bad reaction, couldn’t tell if it actually did much when it comes to removing hair. The pricing is about $290 for 4 sessions. The only issue I had is
The doctor said she had never works on a beard like mine. She said she’d done small portions of unwanted hair on the cheek area, but nothing with my density. Their laser is called “lightsheer duet”. She seemed confident that I could have great results even with my darker complextion(hispanic/latino).

Attached are pictures of my beard.

I just want to clean it up. The top portion(upper cheeks, near eyes, and deep near my nose and shape sideburns) as well as the neck area(inch or two below jaw line). I just want a “normal” beard shape. I don’t want to remove the whole thing.

I would really appreciate some advice. I haven’t found anyone that has had their beard removed that is as high and dense as mine. How safe is it around the eyes? is the skin much more sensitive? Should I try shaving the hairs near my eyes? I haven’t yet because everytime I shave a bit closer the hairs just get darker and thicker. Also, the doc said I could start treatment now, but i’ve been in the sun a bit recently, should I wait a month or so and stay out of the sun before treatment or would it not matter until I’m already in between sessions?

THANKS!

What you are noticing is the result of tweezing. The regrowth appears thicker and darker. How long have you been twezing this area and how frequently?

I’ve been treated twice with Lightsheer Diode. I have not heard of Lightsheer duet.
I have the same problem although not nearly as much as you do. Looks like very suitable hair for laser.

If I were you I’d draw your ideal beardline with those white markers so the technician knows what you want. Also she should not be treating too close to the eyes. dangerous plus those hairs are too thin for laser anyway, you will need electrolysis for that.

Also its bad to have been in the sun recently because the treatment will be more painful and thus you can’'t tolerate the highest settings which you will need.

Tweezing most definitely does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. This is accepted as an old wife’s tail.

From my personal experience I had a slight mono brow, which I used to tweeze. Fast forward 10 years I dont have to anymore as all the hairs have stopped growing there.

I have had lightsheer and gentlelase, but not on my face. Given how small an area this is, the fact you are dark and how the face is hard to hide, Id consider electrolysis.

Yes, there are some fortunate souls, who do have this experience, particularly with eyebrow hair, but this is not the typical outcome of repeated tweezing. The great majority of my clients, with serious facial hair problems, only develop thick, strong, dense hairs after tweezing, other than those with hormonal imbalances. For you this did not occur, but tweezing in itself, is a well accepted cause of acceleration of hair growth.

We sometimes forget how dynamic the human body is: ever part grows, changes and ages. Hair, skin, organs and even bones are changing constantly. Hairs too are different in each phase of life. A seasoned electrologist could look at a photo of hairs anywhere on the body and accurately determine the age of the person.

Consider, for example, a man’s leg hairs. In young adulthood he has luxurious hair, but in old age usually has no hair at all (women too). Of course the man never waxed his legs so there is no “cause and effect.”

The point: Christine is correct regarding tweezing. In some areas of the body tweezing appears to diminish hairs, but in most areas, e.g., the face, tweezing will cause hairs to become thicker and more firmly rooted. Electrologists have observed this phenomenon thousands of times; so this is pretty much a fact.

I also question whether tweezing actually diminishes hair at all, since hairs diminish with age anyway, in specific body areas. Even eyebrows often become less dense (although longer) with age … yet not with all people. Again, the body is dynamic, changes daily and it’s often difficult to establish a true “cause and effect” relationship with any observable change.

What electrologists understand about tweezing, however, is not an “old wife’s tail.”

I must agree with the tweezing. The hair wasn’t this thick, but since I always thought that it didn’t stimulate growth, I decided to tweeze some of the hairs near my eye, now they have grown back thicker and darker. I started tweezing about 2 months ago about 1-3 times a week. I thought maybe it could have been hormones?(I’ve been stressed lately). But I’m a 24 year old male, I don’t think that could be it.

None of my family members have hair like I do, but my grandfather was a hairy guy, my mom says he had a beard just like mine. Assuming It’s genetic?

What can I do, would they thin out by themselves over time?

I want to start treating. So is laser out of the question for my skin complexion? I do not want to end up with bad skin reactions. I go to school and work, I would have 3 days to heal back to normal at most after treatment. Should I just stick to electrolysis? even for the beard portions?

I was thinking doing Electrolysis for my thin hairs near eyes for now, and then work my way down with laser? but I’m not sure if that would end up stimulating growth.

I already looked up a place that charges $80-$90 per hour of treatment. How many treatments am I looking at? I’m not trying to do much, just shape my beard, two maybe three fingers down from the top of the hairs near my eye.

Any advice on how to go about this with my circumstances?

Anyone??

I know that electrolysis can get you the result you desire,it is the laser part of the question, that I am unable to answer. I assume(and this is purely an assumption) that when combining both modalities, that it is best to have laser first, and then to continue with electrolysis to completion. Please wait for more responses, before making any decisions based on my opinion. I am aware that patchiness of the male beard areas, is a common side effect of LHR.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your answer. What if I were to just take care of the whole thing with electrolysis? How many sessions do you think I would need? Like I said I just want 2 possibly 3 fingers down from the top of the hairs near my eyes. How many hours per session? I’m thinking of just getting electrolysis for the hair nearest to my eyes for now. My beard bothers me, but those funny thick hairs near my eyes are the worst. It would just look strange for a long time if I let those be while I get laser.

This will depend entirely on the skill of the electrologist with whom you have your treatment. More skill, will result in fewer treatments. I highly recomend having several consultations and trial treatments, to find the best available. Are you based in a large urban area with lots of practitioners?

I live in Los Angeles, there is a few but not in my immidiate local area. I will try to do that this weekend, see how it goes.

Are you close to Santa Barbara, Michael Bono is based there, and he is one of the very best in this profession.

I am about an hour away. I will most definitely give him a call. Thanks

If you can get treatments from mr. Bono your troubles are pretty much over. I wish I was as lucky as you to be able to get treatments from such qualified technicians.

as this thread is older now I am wondering about your progress in this issue. I suffer pretty much from the same problem. but it’s definitely worse with me. my beard begins directly under the eyes, becoming thicker and thicker over the years. it is not possible to laser-treat this area as it is too near to the eyes.

for now I go to an asian barber who is a master with the thread method. but still this cannot yield perfect results as even with the thread method you cannot reach the area to near to the eyes.

so I wonder how you solved it?
