English treatment thread(London)

Hey guys and girlies,

I know there’s millions of treatment threads and diaries on here, but I thought I might as well add to them with my own and as there’s not many English ones hehe.

Right, to start off with i have done my research properly this time (AMMAGAD!) and spoken to 3 different electrolycists (and am in the process of speaking to the 4th).

Lady #1: Rang her up from a recommendation from a couple of people, when I spoke to her I found her quite abrupt and just not generally very helpful and she seemed to want to get me off the phone as soon as possible (to the point where she texted me her new address) even though it would have been a maximum of 3 minute call. She wasn’t in with a client either. I did book an appointment with her, but I had been ill for the past couple of weeks and I still was when it came round to the appointment, so I ended up cancelling it. I have been reassured that she is quite sweet really and just seems a bit abrupt on the phone. However, she uses a non computerised epilator and Iv’e heard the magnification isn’t amazing as well. I would also have to get on 3 trains to get to her, which I wasn’t nuts about either. Although her consultation was free, which I was impressed about.

Lady #2: Her consultation fee was £10, she does time slots such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes and so on. She cost £33 for 30 minutes and then another reduction in price for 45 minutes. She uses traditional shortwave diathemy (thermolysis) and blend, which wasn’t to my liking.
I had my upper cheek bones and kneck treated, my cheek bones have calmed down a lot although my kneck has still got quite a few red dots and a couple of scabs. I was counting the hairs and she was removing about 3-5 a minute with tradtional SDW (thermolysis), although she did talk quite a bit - informing about the hairs and what they looked like and so on, which she said she wouldn’t do in the next treatment. I think she also is a bit of a maximiser, blast the hair as much as possible without damaging the skin.

Lady #3: I then went to a lady called Sara based up in Harrow/Middlesex. She was so sweet and really put me at ease. She uses the Apilus Cleo as well, which was good. I tried Flash, which was quite a different feeling to traditional Shortwave Diathermy, it shoots 2 shocks (I’m guessing she’s using that multipulse thing) and it’s still much quicker than SWD. My skin reaction was also significantly less (although I only had my upper cheek bones treated, but she did try both modalities on me). It does cost slightly more to be treated with Flash (however, this price is the same as most of the electrologists on the market charge for traditional SDW), but she does offer clients the option to be treated with traditional SDW at a much cheaper rate (which may sound a bit odd, but if you look at it in the way that a client cannot afford the usual price tag of electrolysis for a period of time, they do have the option to be treated with a cheaper version).
It really was quite amazing how much faster flash was than the traditional electrolysis and the reduced skin reaction, Iv’e always believed James, Dee and everyone else that this is the case but it’s still a bit of a eye opener when you first experience it.
Although the only problem is the travel, on average it’s a 6 hour all round trip on the train from where I live (and I hate using the underground), but the main problem with this is it causes problems with my highschool work, especially as Iv’e got my A level exams in 6 months.

Lady #4: This lady lives very close to me and Iv’e been trying to get hold of her but it has been quite difficult, but when I do I will update this post for everyone.

With all these treatments I have made sure I keep my aftercare going well, wipe the area with a salt water solution and apply fresh Witch Hasel gel day and night. Stay out of the sun, don’t wear tight clthing around the neck e.g. Scarves and so on, no swimming (not that I’d want to with this body hair problem) etc.
Pain wise I can handle it quite well, I did find it quite painful though when i was treated around the top of my cheek bones near the eye area, but nothing I can’t manage.

So in conclusion what Iv’e decided to do is postpone my electrolysis until late June when I will have finished all of my A levels and should have hopefully been successful in getting the trainee job Iv’e been working towards up in central London (then it won’t seem like such a long journey, as I live in a county a little way outside of London).
In general though, I really don’t mind travelling the extra distance though simply because Sara is so friendly, she’s a member of the BIAE and she uses a computerised epilator (to get all this in one is like gold ust in England unfortunatley). I know this is a bit early to be starting a thread, but I figured I’d just shove some information on the site about English practitioners and then start posting my experiences on this thread when I start in June.

As a little note, all of the electrolycists I went to are BIAE members (British Institute and Association of Electrolysis).

Kind regards,
Benji

The Cleo is listed on the link below. It compares the Apilus line of epilators and what they offer. So you are getting flash (1/100) with The Cleo. Above that, there is MicroFlash (1/1000) and PicoFlash (1/10,000) possibilities. I got to use The Cleo a couple time when I was in school, but I don’t remember “hating” it or liking it. There were so many brands that we played around with that I honestly can’t remember how treatments felt with The Cleo. The purpose for showing you the comparison chart below is to give you an idea of what starter machines offer as oppossed to others that are increasingly more powerful as you pay more money. If that’s too much information and is not a determining factor for choosing your electrologist, then just ignore this information.

I think you are going about this sensibly. It’s perfect and so mature of you that you are shopping around and taking your time to weigh and choose well. We’ll look forward to your June entries,or when you actually start.

Dee

Thanks Dee. Yeah the speed of thermolysis was a big factor, wasn’t so sure on the numbers so thanks for clarifying  I would love to go with someone who uses Microflash however, to find someone that has the equipment alone to offer this type of treatment is honestly like gold dust (as Sterex is the main brand in England and they have yet to go computerised). Then if you chuck in the other two ingrediants, lighting/visuals and skill, we’re talking about buying a plane ticket to the US every month to get that type of treatment. And there would be no doubt that I would if I could afford it, screw the jet lag.

But ah well, Flash is certinaly better than no Flash hehe.

Kind regards,
Benji

I wouldn’t use the salt solution. Can be irritating. Just witch hazel and/or tea tree oil should be enough.

Well congrats on your Treatment Diary…I’m sure it’s going to be an interesting read! If you prefer you can use a mixture of Aloe Vera and Tea Tree Oil…I found the Aloe Vera soothing and the Tea Tree really helped dry out any scabs.

Good Luck!
Maxine

If one uses the Tea Tree Oil directly after treatment, one may smell like a pine tree, but one also tends to not have scabs, nor any puss filled bumps. Using it overnight for 2 or 3 days also helps a lot well.

And what’s wrong with smelling like a pine tree james? LOL
I actually like the smell, it makes me feel clean!

Funny thing, one of my female clients told me that she used to go directly to her new boyfriend’s place after every electrolysis appointment, and as a result, he now has, how shall we say it… a Pavlovian reaction to the scent of Tea Tree Oil

Hey all,

I know this seems a bit silly updating this thread with the results of my neck from the treatment I had with the traditional thermolysis, but I will anyway.

I still have red dots, there was one area that had quite a scab on it, bigger than the pin prick effect it should have been, which went down and but still remained red. It’s been about 2 weeks now since the treatment so I thought it was most likely an ingrown hair and a zit forming in relation to it. So I did the naughty and plucked at the hair, it was a little hair that came out but it was followed by a little bit of blood (this is not common for me even when I used to pick at my ingrowns) and what looked like an old skin coloured scab came off (if there’s any such thing as that), which I hadn’t noticed. I’m planning to leave it now and the Witch Hazel gel and go straight for the good old germolene (which works wonders for the my skin anyway).

My cheek bones are fine from both traditional and flash thermolysis, but ironically enough (and I know everyone here has said it until their blue in the face) the area treated with Flash recovered the recovered the quickest. Sara did say that she would treat my kneck carefully because the skin tends to become much more aggravatedtheir and for that I feel happiest with her. I generally feel more comfortable/safe with flash anyways and even though it is not Micro or Pico, it still seems to yield a better skin reaction. Now I just have to hope I haven’t caused a little pit (please tell me if I’m being meladramatic).

Just thought I’d post my results with traditional thermolysis for others to read, will come back in June as I said unless anything else crops up in terms of electrolysis.

Benji

Hey all,

Just thought I’d use the thread to ask a ickle question. I’ve got keratosis pilaris on my upper arms and what I’m really wondering is are there any complications or anything else I have to be aware of when having this area treated? I’ve been told that glycolic acid can help with KT, but I doubt I’d be able to use the stuff while having electrolysis.

I did run a search, but didn’t find anything specific in regards to what have to be aware of etc (I know that it won’t really reduce it, but that doesn’t really bother me. I just wanna be able to have electrolysis on my upper arms).

Sorry to bug.

Many thanks,
Benji

Hi Benji.

I actually have done several clients with KP and all went well. Hair was removed and one of my clients said she thinks it made her upper arms less bumpy. Sometimes, I noticed that when the hair was treated and went to lift it out pieces of white matter was sticking on the hair. She has been hair-free for a couple of years now, so I can’t really evaluate her upper arms to see what they look like today, since she no longer needs my services.

Here’s the link:
http://www.hairtell.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/25965/1.html

There would be no problem for you to get electrolysis on your upper arms. You can go slowly and spot test if you want.

Thanks Dee for the info. I usually find that my KP disappears for about a week, give or take one or two days, if I exfoliate for 2 days. So think I will just do that a week before my treatment.

Another quick question, I have a couple of acne scars on my upper cheek bones that have hairs coming out of them (eww, right!?). When having electrolysis on them, has anyone noticed that they become redder for a couple of weeks afterwards, I mean actually inside the pit mark kinda thing? And whether they can have a bigger scab than normal?

Thanks for everyones advice.

Many thanks,
Benji

Hey Benji_Boy as usual you seemed to have thoroughly researched electrolysis before going ahead with it. I’m just wondering if you heard about Geri in Walthamstow i been seeing her for a while now and she is good in my opinion but i have never seen anybody else i just felt really comfortable with her. And i would like to ask you about the person you are seeing (or will see in June), where is she located exactly, does she work from home or at a clinic? (Geri is taking maternity leave atm so im considering trying somewhere new)

regards,
Paleboy

Right I’m back. Thinking back to my last question, I’ve looked at a before picture of my face and found that my acne scars were the same I just hadn’t noticed how red they were because the hair was masking a lot of them.

Right on to the new stuff. I’ve been having electrolysis for the past month now with a lady called Jenifer Clifton, who is certainly the best I’ve ever come across, she’s really sweet and knows a lot about electrolysis. She uses the Apilus SX-500, so it has the lovely Microflash or equivalent as well. She works both up in Nottingham and has recently started working in London, which is where I’ve been travelling to too have treatment.

I had my first 2 hour treatment 2 weeks ago and we cleared my upper cheek bones, I got a bit of scabbing lower down on my cheek bones, which went down within 2 weeks and looks completley normal, but without any hair there (which is how I started to notice the acne marks and blemishes I’ve had hiding beneath the hair).

Anyways, I had my second treatment today and all went well, we removed the new hairs that came up on my cheek bones and set about clearing my lower neck (the bit between the normal beard line and chest hair line). I have quite a lot of dense growth there, which we removed today. The treatment was 2 hours and 20 minutes this time.

So far I’ve had about 4 hours and 20 minutes of treatment and Jennifer is doing about 10+ hairs per minute, so quite fast. Especially considering my hairs are not so well behaved, some can range from a sligh curl to almost a 90 degree curl on my cheek bones and are very deep, they also don’t all point in the same direction. My lower neck the hair have a tendancy to ingrow when shaved and are very flat against the skin. They also are spread quite far apart and are in different directions. So in conclusion we’ve got full clearance on my upper cheek bones and lower kneck and soon I’ll move on to my back, shoulders and upper arms once the hairs that are to fine to be removed with laser have come back. After that I’ll start on my eye brows as well.

In terms of aftercare I’ve been quite rigid with it and doing the usual Witch hazel and so forth, which seems to be working great.

Overall, I’m really happy with Jennifer and can finally see myself getting complete hair removal. Thinking about it, personally I found the most stressful bit of hair removal being the process of finding a good electrologist once lasers done all that it can do. So it’s great that I finally have done now.

Will update again with my fruther treatments.

Benji

Hey was wondering where is Jennifer located? and does she work from home or a clinic?

many thanks,
Paleboy.

Jennifer is located near North-Harrow along the metropolitan line and she works from home at the moment.

Benji

New post feature doesn’t seem to be working right now. So I’ll add a new success story from someone on another forum also in London here.

You can find it here:

http://cosmeticenhancementsforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=34312#34312

Hi all,

I’m afraid I’m one of probably many people guilty of using these forums to research treatments, then not returning to give an account of how I got on.

About 18 months or so ago, I used this forum to find a laser hair removal clinic in London. Here’s the original thread: http://cosmeticenhancementsforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5373&highlight=

As you can see, I ended up going with Laser Clear, a clinic near Liverpool Street station.

I have to say, a year and a half on, that I could not be much happier with the results. My hair is not the easiest to treat - being medium brown, but with a bit of red and blonde in there (and grey unfortunately) - but the first six sessions I had cleared virtually everything very effectively.

The areas which showed most resistance were the shoulders (not surprising as it was quite thick there), but even that was pretty clear after the last of my first six treatments in July 07.

I’ve since had ‘top ups’ (these are recommended every six months) in November, and another a couple of weeks ago, but these were only picking up a few stragglers.

Generally, my back looks fine. A bit of fluffy blonde hair, but nothing that looks at all unnatural. I think the laser has also helped clear up some acne scarring left behind by many painful years of waxing.

To sum up, what was once one of my greatest embarrassments is now something I hardly think about.

A sad note to finish on. The lady who runs the clinic, Ann, was recently admitted to hospital, and is quite ill I believe. I can only wish her a very speedy recovery - as I’m sure others will from this forum who have used Laser Clear.

She was refreshingly frank and up front with me at my consultation, warning me that blonde and red hairs were not easy to treat, and that laser hair removal was not a wholly permanent treatment. I trusted her because of that honesty, and I’ve got a great result which I’ll always be grateful to her for.

hello again everybody!
now that i have had a few laser session its time to get started with elecrolysis on my shoulders(apparently risky to get lhr due to blond and fine hair)

benji_boy,
since you seem to be happy i am quite keen on having a consultation with Jenifer Clifton too. i found her website here however there is no contact details for her london location. are you able to provide me her number?

i did a bit of research on electrolysis practitioners on london on this forum. i came accross the followings:

www.parksidebeautycentre.com

or could anybody else have a recommendation?

by the way, im still thinking a FAQ section on electrolysis on this forum is kinda needed. top contributors?

thanks

Hiya guys and gals!

I’m back now, had some problems with all my internet accounts being hacked unfortunatley.

Well time for a update. We’ve done quite a bit of work on my lower neck/beard line. So far we’ve done over 40 hours of work and am getting much sparser hairs coming through on the right hand side and a bit more on the left hand side of my neck. I’m certainly very happy with Jenna and how the treatment is going.

I was going once a week when I lived up in Birmingham, however as I have moved back down to Essex until September when I move up to Nottingham (guess what was a contributing factor ;)), I’m going every other week now when Jenna comes down to London. Just trying to juggle everything with work, but shouldn’t be to bad soon as Jenna is going to start working in London every other Saturday, so if can’t get the itme off work may have to see if I can start going then.

The time it takes to get full clearance on the area has also reduced considerably. When I started we would be doing 3 hour sessions, now its down to about 1.5 hours, which is good. Jenna works very fast so we get a lot done in that time, hence why I can leave it 2 weeks between treatments at the moment.

When my camera comes back from the camera hospital (I’m a bit of a cluts - if you haven’t guessed by the number of times I’ve had to delay pictures due to breaking it) I will up load some pictures of the progress.

Hairmair if you use the contact details on www.electrabeauty.com you will be able to speak to Jenna directly.

Kind regards,
Benji

Just thought I would also add that I haven’t begun on my back as I’m currently saving my pennies and targeting the smaller area first (this being neck and beard line).

Will hopefully be moving onto my back in September when I move up to Nottingham.

Kind regards,
Benji
