Electrolysis treatment expectations and practitioner

Hi, I’m new to this forum. I’m looking for advice and recommendations. A little bit about me. I have been tested over the years for PCOS and thyroid for facial hair. Always the results are negative. I embarked on a laser hair removal journey about 19 years ago. In that time I have developed hyperpigmentation despite being ultra careful about sun exposure. Some hairs have grown back white but I did have some success. I stopped having laser hair removal about 2.5 years ago. July last year, I decided to try electrolysis. I’ve had 6 treatments over 7 months so they’ve been spaced apart by around 4-6 weeks. I’ve found that the hairs have grown back. I’ve think I’ve read somewhere that you are not supposed to feel the hair being removed. I feel the hair being tugged and it’s pretty uncomfortable. Should I continue with the practitioner that I have or find someone else? Is there something about my hair removal journey that means that future treatments may take longer to take effect, if at all? Are there any recommendations for practitioners in South Yorkshire / England UK? Thank you

Welcome to Hairtell moores77.

Electrolysis will permanently remove any hair structure, for any color of hair on any color of skin. It is the only thing on planet earth that will do this permanently. For this to be successful for an individual, YOU MUST NOT FEEL the hair being lifted out of the follicle once it is treated. If you do, you are being tweezed. Not good. Discuss this with your electrologist or check out the work of other electrologists.

Thank you @Deedra. Do you have any advice on how to approach the conversation with my practitioner? Could it be the machine settings or her skills?

It could be either, but I don’t have enough information to know??

The best approach is to offer her feedback about the tweezing sensation you were feeling and that will give her a chance to correct course.

Again, you can check out how other practitioners do this, how it feels and how it heals. You are the consumer and you are doing your homework, which is good. If there are no other practitioners convenient to where you live, it is best to have a polite conversation with the one you have. Show her some statements about it’s not a good thing to feel any pulling, traction or tugging. It could be the probe size is too small for the follicles being treated? It could be the energy level is not sufficient enough either with timing or intensity (some epilators are not powerful enough to affect certain hairs). If insertions are not perfect, the hair won’t slide out properly. I guess that’s the place to start, but there could be other extenuating circumstances?

Thank you @Deedra. My next session is booked for Saturday so I will try and discuss this with her then :crossed_fingers:

I wish you the best. I don’t think people know how hard it is to remove hair. So many things need to click into place for it be successful. I’m sure your electrologist is trying her best to serve you well. You are partners working together to communicate well. I hope she has a good attitude about your concerns.

Hi @Deedra,

I just thought I’d give you an update.

I had my appointment and decided to sound her out. I asked if I should feel the hair being tugged out if the electrolysis had worked. Her reply was that the hair can be felt being tugged and sometimes not. She also offered me a combination of electrolysis and laser treatment. So have a laser session, wait 2 weeks and then have an electrolysis session. I’ve decided that’s not an option I want to do.

After an electrolysis session, black dots appear after about 7 days and hairs start to push through. She turned up the settings on Saturday and it was a lot more uncomfortable. I’ve paid upfront and have 3 more sessions left.

I’m unsure if anyone will read this as I cannot set up a post directly. But I found an excellent electrolysis technician in York, her name is Joanne and she works at Select beauty salon within a hotel on Tadcaster road. I tried 2 others in the York area and was about to give up due to the pain, slow pace and attitide of the last person I tried. Thankfully I tried Joanne. The lack of pain, speed and results amazed me. I would have settled for below par treatment without realising how it should be.
Due to menopause I developed excessive facial hair, mostly white and a good 2 cms long I would epilate but it was so painful and the hairs grew back sticking out!
I have 30 minute sessions most weeks. Its been 2 months and most of my downy facial hair is gone. I was so self conscious especially in the winter sun but now I don’t care.
Select have a top of the range machine and its approx £32 for 30 minutes.
The first person I tried was very slow with an old machine and didnt know how to tackle fair hair, the second girl was a bit better but still slow and on my second visit it really hurt and she kept saying I can’t see where the hair grows from and she was stressed and I was close to tears so asked her to stop. She wanted me to shave my face and wait until the stubble came through. I thought she was the better therapist out of the two, however now I see how inexperienced she was, she just worked in a fancier looking salon.
Joanne has been a life saver. Its not that comfortable: it is a small needle in the face over and over afterall but I manage it with a low pain threshold. I have sensitive acne/roseaca skin and Ive been fine. There is some pimple type reactions a few days after but if I apply the witch hazel a few times a day and don’t pick or touch, it soon clears. She also does it sporadically so my fears of pitting have not occurred.
Its a great feeling, knowing my beard will be well under control for the summer!
