Electrolysis/permanent scars

Hello Dee,

I am here looking for a professional advice. I am a 27 year old male, suffering from unwanted facial hair. To be precise weird upper cheek hair and a couple on the side of the nose.
I am planning on a Laser/Electrolysis to get rid of this hair.

I am willing to take all the pain of electrolysis and all the time needed. But my only big concern is the possibility of PERMANENT scars/scabs on the face. How big is the probability for such a thing to happen, and if it happens is there a cure, can i still get rid of those scars.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I’m not Dee, but I will chime in here since I’ve had both laser and electrolysis done without issues.

  1. Laser is NOT the right solution for your needs. Laser is only good for larger areas with dense, coarse hair and a lot of it.

  2. Electrolysis is not that painful. And numbing cream can eliminate most of what is left. It’s important to find a good electrologist using modern equipment to minimize any pain. But it’s really not something I would be concerned about, especially for so little hair, relatively speaking. Electrolysis can easily remove 5-10 hairs on average, so each treatment will be pretty short too.

  3. There is NO permanent damage of any sort with proper treatments. Try sample treatments at 3-4 electrologists with modern equipment and you’ll easily be able to pick the best one that leaves your skin looking great. Scabbing sometimes happens on certain areas, but it only lasts a few days and they fall off without any side effects. You are very worried unnecessarily. Just concentrate on finding someone you’re comfortable with.

hi lagirl,

Thanks for your response. That has given me a huge confidence. I was only worried because i was planning for the electrolysis on my face and you know how a permanent scar would leave your face. I was never worried about the pain i had to face, though i assume it would be painful.

I would do as you suggested, try 3 to 4 electrologists and decide on the best one. But how to know if it would/wouldnt leave any permanent scar, as it would take months for the scar to appear on the skin, and what in case of such a scar.

Thanks a lot

Permanent scars are rare. They are caused by over treating an area. You would know early on if an electrologist is over treating you, if you do not heal within a few days or less than a week. This applies to facial areas. Body area’s take longer to heal.

If you are embarrassed to go to work or to socialize with family and friends because your face looks like you have acne all over the place, then that is a clue that maybe you should stop treatment with that electrologist and search onward for an electrologist that delivers permanent hair removal without all the healing drama. You need to expect temporary redness and swelling because we are destroying tissue that makes hair grow. The skin will react. The question is, how much and for how long. If you heal well after each and every treatment, then permanent scarring is nothing you have to worry about. With the newer epilators used today and a well-trained electrologist, you will find success, meaning, permanent hair removal with skin that looks like hair never grew there.

dfahey when you say over treating what do you mean? my electrologist insists she cant remove all the hair in one session, because she will be over treating the area and i will have very bad skin reaction, my skin usually takes 7 to 10 days to get back to normal, she uses thermolysis on my face, ( she has Clareblend elegance)

I would like to test out on of those Clareblend Elegance models, but up to this point, I have never used that model. The older Clarablends would surely be too much to use for what Dee and I typically describe on a first clearance taking place in one day, but I can’t say if the newer Clareblend Elegance can be used in the same way that the machines Dee and I use for that level of treatment in such a short space of skin.

If there is someone on here who uses this machine and can speak for its ability to do lots of hairs in a small area, we would be grateful for your input.

Overtreatment means treating the hair follicle beyond what is necessary. Your electrologist needs to make the call on how long your sessions should be, not me. Again, we are all different and her comfort level is her comfort level. Your healing situation sounds good!

james this is the same exact epilator she has. I’ve been to three different electrologists you use this.

The area you mention is particularly sensitive to permanent scarring. You, srik, should carefully choose the more cautious professional. In this case the speed is secondary, it is essential to remove the hair, respecting an exquisite care of the skin.

I am not in agreement with the sideburn area being more sensitive to permanent scarring, ded10. I don’t understand why that area would be sensitive??? Just to share with you,I routinely work for an hour or more on sideburns and have no problems short term or long term. I used micrroflash in the past and now I use picoflash with insulated probes. I sure would be interested in what others are doing and would be curious as to why they shy away from longer appointments.

Dear Dee, I understood with the help of my translator, which is the upper cheek, ie, near the bottom of the eye. It is very common that men apply for this area, to give more softness to her features.

mmmmm, okay? I’m sorry I can’t reply in Spanish. If one of my kids were around, they could do that for me, so let me just try to say that I’m referring to the sides of the face from the top of the ear lobe to below the jawline. In any case, I cannot say that I have found any area, on the body or face, that is prone to scarring??? Some areas are more sensitive and ouch more than others, but scarring? - No.

Thanks ded10,

Dee

hi dee,

what ded10 has said, scared the hell out of me (the area being particularly sensitive and prone to scarring).

Let me be clear the area i want to get treated is

  1. i have a couple of hairs on either side of the nose, so that area.
  2. and the upper cheek bone area.

are these areas or particularly the upper cheek bone area particularly sensitive to scarring?

thank you,
srik

hi ded10,

you seem to have already done to this area. have you had any cases of scarring.

regds,
srik

My answer is absolutely NOT! You MAY have temporary skin reaction that will last for less than a week, but no scarring. I have worked on these area’s many times and all turned out beautifully. I am not some super hot shot electrologist that exaggerates claims like this. There are many electrologists that treat these areas everyday and they do it quite successfully. You need to get treatment and then observe your healing. If you look a mess after treatment for more than a week, then you need to give feedback to your electrologist, but do expect to have SOME evidence that the area was treated and do know that these are TEMPORARY, normal skin reactions that should last less than a week or so.

Again, I am saying clearly that this area or any other area is not prone to scarring with electrolysis when it is performed correctly. Be not afraid.

Dee

“I am saying clearly that this area or any other area is not prone to scarring with electrolysis when it is performed correctly”

Dee, I totally agree with your assertion.
But you will agree with me that is not always performed correctly . The case of Empaty is very recent and very informative. It is a clear case of malpractice. I think it will never be enough warnings about it. It is necessary to get in good hands if we do not want to end with bullets.

PD: to know what I’m saying!!!. I hope it is not nonsense.

Hello srik,
In fact we have worked quite there. Along with area between the eyebrows is one of the most popular among men. It is not difficult to treat because the density of hairs in that area is not very large. This is the last area in which the hairs reach their maximum thickness, why many believe has been caused by shaving. erroneous theory.
To be treated with caution, it does not mean that they are permanent scars on the contrary, the pores of your skin will be closed because it should not leave the hair. Appear to have never been there. You will look like when you were a child.
Make your case to Dee, knows very well what says. greetings

I get the gist of what you are saying, ded10. You’re fine.

I am also male and looking to get my facial hair removed. what bothers me most is my upper lip and the hair around my mouth. while it is not as thick or coarse as other men, it bothers me. since my upper lip is sensitive, is it possible it can scar this area or am i worried too? a scar or permanent redness on my upper lip is my biggest fear and would be disastrous. i hope i am just being paranoid. seems like the slightest stubble or mark on my upper lip changes my appearance and i would like this hair gone.

Yeahbuddeh, are you sure you want to remove the hair from that area? I think it would look very strange.
In any case, if you are decided, it is not difficult to achieve. In males, the follicles are deeper, therefore, inflammation is unavoidable but temporary. The good news is that this area, anesthetic creams are more effective, for being around area of mucosal.
