Electrolysis on upper lip.

Hi all I need your help making a decision. I have a very dark pigememted upper lip which is so hairy. I have been threading for the past 4/5 years which has caused the dark shadow. I got my face lasered three times before moving on to electrolysis and so far I have only had it done on my chin, cheeks and a little bit of the upper lip. My Electrologist said because the upper lip is sensitive that she will thin it out first. The issue is that I don’t know if it’s worth it doing electrolysis there. The hairs are already thick and dark and I’m scared that electrolysis might make it look darker as a side effect. I don’t want it to look even darker than it already is. The other problem is that I have to let my hair grow in between treatments which makes me feel so embarrassed and insecure ALL the time. I have attached a photo here: http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah23/iwantmylifeback/A0E9B891-7516-453D-BAE5-5BBF8B9CF885_zpsjfnalwry.jpeg

There are little hairs currently which make it look darker. Even if there are no hairs there is always this sdark shadow haigntung my upper lip making it look like I have hair there. So Idk if I should continue to thread my upper lip while I do electrolysis on the rest of my face and neck or just bear the pain and side effects of electrolysis to be hair free. . I really don’t know what I should do. :frowning:

Seriously, you have already made a somewhat bad situation much worse (the years of tweezing).

If you want resolution, you are now going to have to go along with the program your electrologist has outlined for you. It is not going to be easy because you are going to notice every tiny “detail” post-treatment. You will be worrying about everything and seeing “skin damage” until, finally, the skin settles down and the results are perfect and permanent.

And, this is typical of the upper lip cases that we see all the time. In the end you will realize that all the “angst” was not necessary … but, you will still suffer through the process as many upper lip cases do … no matter what the experts tell you.

Still, nobody can make a decision for you; but consider … do you really think that continuing to tweeze the hairs is going to be of any benefit at all? You have the solution, but after all the nonsense you have experienced don’t expect a magic wand to quickly resolve your upper lip problem.

the dark shadow is hyperpigmentation from he tweezing/threading. It will darken more in all probability if you continue to do what you have been doing, that is threading/waxing.

It will also darken from electrolysis, however, this is the trick, hyperpigmentation lasts a while but IS NOT PERMANENT. When you remove the continuing inflamation ( that is when you stop plucking or doing electrolysis) the skin starts to finish its healing process and the hyperpigmentation fades. Always.Completely.

Upper lip is one of the easier places to get clearance of and it is possible to completely and permanently remove all the hair from an upper lip in 9-12 months. So you wont need to worry about hairs showing, because the first order of business is to remove them all, then come back continuously over the next 9 months remove them as they come in and start to grow.

Mike is right, dont let the “hair dysphoria monster” get you! Follow with the treatment to the letter, and you will not have any of the problems that have you concerned.

Micheal! im so glad you replied, my electrologist is a fan of yours. I know electrolysis is brilliant if done right but the thing is I am sick of being insecure about the hairs. my electrologist can only thin it out for now and i’m scared of it looking worse- darker during the process plus majority of the hairs will still be there which sucks. the other thing is that im only a student and i dont know if i can afford to go in every week and pay. im thinkng of discussing this with her tomorrow. i still plan on having treatment on other areas. have you ever seen upper lips as dark as mine? if so does it look better overtime?

can I shave the hairs in between treatments or not? youre giving me hope but my electrologist said she wont be doing clearance on my upper lip and gradually thin it instead does that mean it will take longer than 18 months?

ask your electrologist. I dont personaly have a problem with clients shaving, but some do not like you to shave.

Over the years, I have had several “major medical” things and I just had to put myself in the hands of the experts. Right now … I have another one (as I learned yesterday). What I’ve learned is that the emotional “suffering” is optional. Don’t over-think your upper lip problem. (Although, actually, I do it too! So, I’m talking to myself as well.)

Your case is nothing special and clearly your electrologist knows what she’s doing. Just “go” with her suggestions and don’t second-guess or micro-manage. In the vast scheme of things, what you have is nothing … nothing to fret about. Just get it done and understand that, eventually, you will see that all the agonizing was for naught.

Just get started. Don’t worry about the “18-months,” because 18 months are going to slip away anyway. If you don’t get going on this, you will still have seen the 18 months pass by … and you will still have the hairs. I know I sound a bit unsympathetic and that’s because my attitude is exactly what you need to hear.

You have an issue that can and will be resolved. Trust me, as your young life unfolds, there are going to be much larger issues for you (it’s just life), and some of those events will have no “fix.” All of us here on Hairtell see this over-and-over: people putting WAY too much “angst” on a simple problem with a real solution. As you will discover, it’s a tiresome waste of energy.

“The mind is its own special place. It can make a heaven of hell, or a hell of heaven.” (John Milton)
