Electrolysis in Ottawa

I am a Certified Electrologist with my own practice. I am new to this forum but would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding electrolysis and what to expect when getting treatments.

Hi,
It is a pleasure to welcome an other professional electrologist who could share her knowledge with us. If you want to participate on an thread about electrolysis, you will find a lot of interesting posts in the appropriate section.

By the way, I saw on your website you work only on women, why ?

Hello Adrien,

I have decided to only work on women because my practice is a home based one. If I decide to switch my practice to a public location, then I would be happy to include male clients.

ASV I do most of my practise ( also in Ottawa) on male or transgender clients, from my home and have never had a problem. I see statements such as the one on your site all the time, and I have to tell you, I generally dont see those practises in existance for very long. You are missing a big chunk of the market service CIS women only and your business will suffer for it. It also tends to give the overall impression that you are not friendly or accepting of such clients, and that reputation can outlast your moving into professional offices by many many years. You’re free to run your business how you feel comfortable, but I will tell you it’s a mistake financially.

I will also say, that one of the better electrologists here in town has been looking for an electrologist to work with her, for upwards of a year. She wont accept anyone who is not LGBT friendly, because it’s that much of a part of the business that she cannot afford to be unfriendly to those clients.

Just to weight in, I’m a cis-woman and I would be turned off by the “for women only” announcement, too. It definitely sounds transphobic to me, particularly in this line of business.

If you really don’t want men in your house, maybe you could at least accept cis and trans women? Then it sounds more like it’s a safety thing (your safety), as opposed to a prejudice. Just my opinion, though!

I’m not going to tell you what to do with your business and home, but I will say that most of the electrologists where I live are “women only.” Being openly accepting of the trans community has gotten me a lot of cis women that said they picked me precisely because I was so accepting.

To echo jess, I’d recommend clarifying “for women only” with “for women (including trans women) only” if you’re accepting of trans women.

Also, keep in mind, regardless of gender, you’re accepting people into your home and those people could turn out to be thieves, stalkers, etc.

In my own practice, I’m willing to work on anyone and I also specifically state that I’m “LBGT friendly and trans affirming.” The latter is important, since trans people often feel alienated from the broader LG community and, when a lot of places say LGBT friendly, they’re really “LG money friendly” and don’t care about the trans population. Plus my trans clients also are quite happy that I accept their identity by only referring to them with their preferred name and pronouns, particularly since I’m often the first non-friend/medical professional they have come out to (and often, I get them even before they’ve told a therapist, doctor or their family). It’s a big, big deal to them to find places where they truly feel welcome and their allies know this.

Thanks Seana for bringing me forth as ’ one of the better ’ electrologists in Ottawa
I know Silvana, from ASV, her technique is good, she has potential and she’s very gung ho about this industry. I’ve already raised these concerns about limiting the kinds of clients she receives but she will likely change her mind as she gets more and more comfortable with working in general.

I just gave an a big presentation to the FCEA Ontario electrolysis Assocation on transgender electrolysis this past weekend and how to support the community. It was extremely well received and I hope that it will spread the awareness of how much this profession is needed for trans women and cis women alike.

You’re most welcome. You deserved it ! I’m happy to see you educating, it’s worth it.

We still have to have that coffee soon. Life is finally a little less hectic, thank goddess, but I’m out of town next tues to go see the gatekeepers in toronto, and free other than that.

I would like to apologize to those of you that were offended by “for women only”, especially to the transgender community. I am in no way prejudice against anyone. If I were contacted by a transgender person regarding treatment, I would not turn them away.

Silvana

I would like everyone to know that I have now added (Transgender Welcome) on my website. Thank you to all that have posted.

Silvana

BIG FAT GRIN!

I want you to know, I was in NO WAY picking on you, I’ve actually written long posts on this subject about the ottawa market, and I do wish to see you succeed. Keep talking to Veronica…she knows her stuff and is very good about teaching what she knows and advocating.

So certainly in no way was I offended, nor I think anyone else, I know for me personally it was to pass on a possible key to success. The reality is, that transpeople get more work done, usually in longer sessions that are easier to schedule. There’s a saying around here… "Go away and take your $20000 with you! " said no electrologist ever.

Best of luck with your venture, and feel free to chime in here anywhere you like or poke me if there’s anything you desperately need to know .
