I suffer from PCOS and over the last 2-3 years have started growing very course hair on my face and upper lip. I bruise easily and take a very long time to heal.
I went to an electrologist here in Houston who uses the manual machine. She did two hairs on my stomach, I could feel the insertion of the needle, the zap and the tweeze. It’s left two small red dots.
I’m desperately looking for someone who can remove the hair without having an adverse effect on the skin. I’m willing to travel as well. My best bet right now is to fly to Dee in Ohio.
I tried contacting Cristina Navarette, but, she is out of the country. Does anyone know of a world-class electrologist like Dee or Josefa here in Houston?
“She did two hairs on my stomach, I could feel the insertion of the needle, the zap and the tweeze. It’s left two small red dots.
So, let me get this straight: after seeing one electrologist and have two hairs removed (improperly) you conclude that you have to travel to Ohio or Spain to find appropriate electrolysis treatment?
If this is the impression you have gotten from the “experts” on Hairtell, I am sure it is the WRONG impression. Because someone posts here does not (necessarily) make him or her the “best in the world.” I mean, there are, what, 4 or 5 electrologists posting here?
I believe these talkative colleagues are excellent in their profession, but PULEEEEZE … the Houston area is “the 6th largest metro area in America with a population of 6 million.” Do a little research in your area and find a local therapist.
(I had a similar experience with a guy in San Diego: he was ready to come up to Santa Barbara because he “couldn’t find anyone.” I found somebody for him and it’s working out nicely! San Diego is famous for highly skilled electrologists.)
If those of us posting here are actually giving the public the impression that “there are almost no qualified therapists in the world (except us)” Well, we should be taken out to the town square and beaten! Trust me: we are NOT connoting this idea at all … are we?
Further to Michael’s post, as a client, these are things that I would recommend.
First, have her treat the area where you want work done! Stomach and upper lip will react entirely differently. You cannot compare the reaction you get on the body with the face.
I also recommend people who ask me to book at least a 15 min treatment with the consultation to get an idea of what the work is like. If it seems okay (nothing major like every hair is being plucked out), book another short treatment. At some point you will feel either “yeh, this seems good”, so you increase your time, or “this sucks and it’s not getting better” so may not want to continue with that person. For example, if you get a not so great reaction, give the electrologist a chance to see it and adjust treatment if required.
Funnily enough, after all my research, the first electrologist I actually saw was the one I ended up sticking with. Over the time I was with her, I did try others, using her as a bench mark and she was definitely the best for me.
I really love the Brits’ use of “Funnily,” as in “funnily enough.” I’m trying to get this going here and a few people have picked it up.
The first time I heard this expression was in Holland and I had the audacity to correct the speaker. I was wrong and the expression is, I suppose, technically incorrect but now part of our language and, I think, a nice one.
All good words from Michael and Stoppit. I am in total agreement. Funnily, ( I’m a little British) when I read your post earlier, nesense, I was going to make the same points as my two hairtell colleagues made, after I finished my appointments today. Stoppit, nailed it with her body work verses facial work comment. Two insertions cannot give you confidence or no confidence in someones work. There are plenty of Texas electrologists that can serve you well. We post here to help and educate the consumer about electrolysis from each individual electrologists perspective. How Jossie approaches a back hair case may not be the way I approach a back case, but we both still deliver permanent hair removal to the client.
How many electrologists are there in the greater Houston area? How many have you had consults and sample treatments with in Houston?
What should the skin look like after a treatment on your face? It is normal to have redness/pinkness and slight swelling for hours to a couple days. If a few small pinpoint scabs happen to develop, THAT IS OKAY. They should fall off in about a week. I am not easy with larger scabs and pustules that last weeks and weeks leaving behind red marks after the scabs fall off. Pinpoint scabs - okay. Big scabs - not okay.
What should the skin look like after a treatment on a body area? Redness / pinkness, swelling, scabbing, red dots. Sometimes there are no red dots or scabbing.
We are messing with the underworld of the skin and there will be telltale signs that this quiet world has been stirred up with energy to disable the hair follicle. It subsides. It heals. Be prepared for some reaction and be at peace with it.
If you can’t find someone in Houston, Dallas is 2.5 hours away by car. Austin is three hours from Houston. I can give you individual names in both of those cities to start with. You would be much happier ( and richer ) staying close to home, nesense. I have confidence in my hard earned abilities, but other electrologists have confidence in their hard earned abilities, too. Travel makes sense if you live in an area that has no electrologists, but you live in one of the most awesome cities in the United States. I did return your call on Thursday, by the way, just so you don’t think I’m rude!
Thanks and let us know how we can further help you.
For me to travel to Ohio 1-2 times a month for 3-4 months is not a big deal considering the fact that I know FOR SURE that my skin is in capable hands. Every time I read Dee’s posts/ reaction , I know that she really cares about her work. After that with reduced growth I could continue with an electrologist here in Houston.
But, my growth is not too excessive and I can wait. I am willing to try other electrologists here in Houston/ Dallas/ Austin / San Antonio because in the long run it would be easier for me (and my husband). Next time I go for a consultation, I’ll make sure I get at least 15 minutes done on my stomach/legs. Once I get comfortable with an electrologist, I can move to the face.
Dee - who would you recommend in the Dallas-Austin - Houston- San Antonio area? Thank you so much for returning my call, I just saw the voice message you left.
nesense, I completely understand your point of view. For me and my sister, it was much easier to see Josefa once than to go for weekly appointments for a year. Because I knew what to expect from my local electrologist, and I knew what to expect from Josefa’s work. For me, getting rid of the hair is the most important thing.
You have to do what’s right for you. Personally I don’t think it’s a bad thing if you can travel to Dee for one long session to get the ball rolling. Then continue with someone more local. One significant difference from what you may find is that Dee, James, Josefa etc can all do longer sessions which means you can clear a lot of hair in one sitting.
Don’t give up looking until you have done an exhaustive search.
I understand the reports on here are scary but people tend to post when they need help. I do like the idea of building up trust with your electrologist. I didn’t have mine work on my eyebrows until I was really comfortable with her. But please don’t compare the reaction. Scabbing and pigmentation is far more likely on the body. As long as the electrologist isn’t doing anything terrible on the body, I don’t think it will hurt to have some time on the face… you really need to see how you react there.
