Electrologists on Long Island

In reply to Arlene:

Fino trained everyone in the office. As, you are aware, New York State has no requirements of electrologists other than they be 16 years old and either have a cosmetology license (where their electrolysis training may have been a paragraph in a book and a 15 minute talk about it) or have training either at a school, with a practitioner, or just make sure no one sues you for damage if you have none of the above.

Fino was one of the people who helped write the CPE test, and having been trained by one of those who wrote the test, and “the book” so to speak, (modern electrology published by Milady press) none of them felt the need to get credentials not mandated by their state.

I have had actual work done by Fino, and the young lady who gives electrolysis work at the office, but not the two sons. I am confident, however that they are great, as when I got my work done by the lovely lady, she was only half way through “the old man’s” course and I had no complaints. I apologize to her for not remembering her name off hand, but it has been a long time and I only met her that once. John and James have always been booked solid when I was in town, so they had little time to talk much less work on me.

Lastly, this board recommends lots of New York City area electrologists. It is no one’s intention to say that Fino and his family are the only electrologists in the 5 borroughs. The thing that they do better than anyone I have ever seen is speed. There is a price to pay for that speed, but if speed is the only thing you care about, then there is the place to go. If you want to have work done in a way that no one knows that you are having work done, the house of Gior is not the place for you.

James,

You indicate the following:

“Lastly, this board recommends lots of New York City area electrologists. It is no one’s intention to say that Fino and his family are the only electrologists in the 5 borroughs.”

I want to clarify that we were referring to Long Island electrologists, not NYC - 5 borough electrologists. The Giors are located on Long Island in Great Neck, not in NYC, not in the 5 boroughs.

Just recently, someone who went to the Giors for electrolysis told me that after reading some of your posts, they decided to look elsewhere for electrology treatment. Your posts gave them the idea that the new modern digital epilators were better than the ones with knobs and so they didn’t go back to the Giors indicating that they didn’t have modern equipment. What do I tell folks who ask me about equipment? I say that it is NOT digital or analog that will insert the probe, it is the practitioner so in my opinion, it isn’t the most important variable in getting good treatment and I encourage them to stick with their practitioner if all else is well.

Since I indicate that I am an electrology instructor, people call me and email from everywhere with questions. I eventually get to everyone. When people want to come in for consultations knowing that they will not become clients because of distance, I make sure to provide them with enough information so that they can be an informed electrology consumer. As long as I work and teach in Queens, I have the time to do this. Should I go back to Manhattan or any wealthy community for that matter, there will not be that same luxury of time.

I have lots of little tidbits of information about some of the referrals that are given here and that is why I hope that the HairTell readers NOT choose a referral based on the referrals of folks they don’t even know as they don’t know about hidden agendas. I ask that they arm themselves with information, find referrals from CREDENTIALING organizations like the AEA, and then meet with electrologists and interview, interview, interview, sample, sample, sample, and then choose.

The only tidbits of information I am willing to share are those that have to do with something tangible. Equipment is not heresay.

…and I tell them that without actually sampling treatment, one can’t know an electrologists’s worth. I advise people that if they do listen to someone’s referral, make sure it is someone who has had work done by that person.

For the millionth time, SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE IS MOST IMPORTANT. It just so happens that machines can increase ones abilities for both speed and more gentle treatment. It also happens that the time between opening the box on a digital and not burning holes can be shorter than an analogue.

In the end, good treatment can be done with both, or neither, and bad treatment can be done with both, or neither.

In the end, it is like I said to my nephew when he was sent home for fighting someone who called him a name: “Would it make you mad if I called you ORANGE? It shouldn’t, because you ought to know that you are not ORANGE!” Seriously, people who are sure of their talents don’t care what people who don’t know their talents think of their talents. They only care that they have a fair chance to prove their talents to those who get the opportunity to experience their work. Do a good job on the consultation sample treatent, and that person will be back as long as they don’t get better, faster treatment with less post treatment irritation at one of their other consult samples.

i have a question…has anyone heard of Electrolysis by Judy in suffolk county?

After some thought…

Is there the equivalent for this site on dentist’s?
If James were a dentist, I think I would travel to him.

Check out the folks in your neighborhood and see what you think.
If you can’t find the quality you need, move further out.
Consultations are usually free.

Don’t get me started on DENTISTS!

I have had so much BAD work done by so many dentists who were highly recommended by friends and family.

I am now sorry to say that I had a perfect mouth full of teeth until a dentist got a look at my dental plan and went nuts ruining my mouth. Now, I will probably die from an infection resulting from some of this horrible oral opportunism.

I found a great dentist via Yelp.com. It’s a great site for reviews. There is another doctor-specific site called www.heathgrades.com, which is useful, but it doesn’t have a ton of reviews yet. InsiderPages is ok for some cities too.

Who is your great dentist?

Dr Hamidi in Tribeca. He takes insurance too, which many NYC dentist refuse to do. He’s booked up about 2 months out though, with good reason I guess!
