Do I have a bad machine or am I the problem?

Hello from Europe. I feel lost and would really appreciate your advice.

Background: I did an electrolysis training in 2023 and own a very simple thermolysis machine. I‘m currently losing clients because the electrolysis sessions are sometimes unsuccessful. My training was very basic, and still I paid 3.500€ for 3 days including the machine. The trainer did not teach me about hair types, skin types, needle length and I‘ve only ever worked with thermolysis. There is no one around in the whole country that I could learn from. So I did a lot of „learning by doing“ on myself, my family and close friends.

I just opened a beauty business and also want to offer electrolysis because I love this method of hair removal. However recently, I‘ve had to stop my appointments because the hair was not releasing as it should. In the past I had some clients where I got 70% of the hairs out in the first try, which means I was Overall slow, but in the last appointments I didn‘t get A SINGLE HAIR OUT. I felt embarrassed and gave them their money back for the session. Now I have completely paused the service, because I don’t want to do harm to people‘s skin, even though there is a high demand and I have people waiting for me to continue. The company I did the training is extremely unprofessional and also basically ignores me when I try to contact them. They already checked my device and apparently everything is working.

How I use the device: most of the time I would use manual mode (with food pedal) or automatic mode (0.5 sec increments) with about 2 seconds. The intensity is usually at 80% upwards. I stretch the skin, insert the appropriate STEREX needle in the same angle as the hair and make a tiny circle around it. (It seems nobody is doing this though?!) This is how I was shown in the training.

Questions:

  1. Is Thermolysis the wrong method for a beginner? Is my technique wrong? I’ve been reading that some people do 5-20 seconds and I have never learned about this. Should I do way more seconds and less intensity and without the „circle“? How can I find resources for training online that does not cost a ton of money?

  2. Do you think this is a bad device? I was planning on getting an Apilus but don‘t have this kind of money, or maybe a STEREX SX-B. But I don‘t know if the device will work better or if my lack of knowledge is the problem.

I really want to continue doing electrolysis but don‘t know what is the right step. maybe someone can point me in the right direction as to what to do. Thank you if you read until here!

Hi, @wanttobebetter, welcome to the forum!! I’m very new as well, and can’t offer much advice, but look forward to reading responses from others. It seems to reason that if you were getting successful release previously, then no release at all, it might be a machine issue. It sounds like you’re working on your technique, with probably still needs some work, but going from 70% release to 0% release sounds significant. Have you considered sending the machine somewhere for testing and calibration? But it sounds like you might be in an area where that might not be an option.

You might have one or more bad accessory cords. Always check cords and have a spare probe holder and foot pedal on hand at all times.
