Diode for IV skin type

So today I went to this clinic where I live and had a consultation with the laser therapist. I told her I want to have the neck area (under the beard line) lasered. Basically they have three types of machines Lightsheer Diode, GentleYAG and Ellipse Light (IPL).

She said she is going to perform the Diode laser on me. I am not sure about this as I’ve read here that the Nd YAG is better for IV. She does the neck area for many men everyday so I guess she is experienced and know what she talks about. She said something about the start settings 17 over 30 something like this.

Could you guys advice me on this ? I am really concerned about this procedure as my skin color is light brown (IV) and worried of resking my skin with burns. Also worreid about getting patcy results but she assured me she knows what she’s doing.

This is the webpage of the clinic if you have the time to look at it !

Thanks in advance

LightSheer diode is more powerful, but harder to use. 17j is a low settings on it, even if they have the 12mm spot size machine (the other is 9mm - can you ask which they have?). They also need to use compression when using this machine. If that’s the highest they are willing to go on your skin, they should be using the Yag.

If the hair is coarse and dense, GentleYAG would work as well. But once again, settings matter.

Thanks LAgirl.

Well they have both Nd yag and diode at the clinic but she wants to use diode on me. Maybe it is best for this area? (Neck)

So what’s the ideal setting for me in this case that will not burn me and will target the hair better ? I am not sure she said something about jouls but said 17 over 30 I didn’t understand. I will call them again today.

What’s the maximum setting on lightsheer diode ?

It doesn’t depend on the body area. It depends on your skin type. I assume she may be more comfortable on that machine, but those low settings won’t do much if you want permanent removal.

30 is the pulse width. It’s fixed on LightSheer at 30ms.

do you mean with this low setting I am just removing the hair temporary and it actually wont affect the structure of the hair like turn it from thick to thin or black to light brown ? Can I achieve this with this low setting. Plus I guess they use this setting first and then increase it over time. What do you think ?

If you want to remove the hair permanently, you need to use high settings. If you use low settings, you won’t see any results or the “results” will be temporary. Increasing over time is sort of pointless if you can handle higher settings from the start. The finer the hair, the harder for laser to target it.

ok I understand now. But what about my skin type ? I’ve read that using diode with high settings burns IV skin type permanently. I am not sure which better for me in this case nd yag or diode ?

I said it’s fixed for simplicity here  Most providers use 30ms because that’s where most of the joules settings they use fall into. I assume that’s why they got that number above.

Either way, OP, what you need is someone who’s willing to treat you at high settings. If 17J is the highest they are willing to go on LightSheer, it’s too low to be effective. A Yag would be better, BUT only if they’re willing to use that Yag at good aggressive settings. Treating with any machine at low settings is pointless. And this clinic can just be conservative with all their machines. We don’t know since we don’t know what settings they’d use on the Yag. All we can tell you is that those LightSheer settings are too low.

High settings on the Lightsheer will likely cause burns on your skin type. This is why they want to use 17j when the usual minimum recommended settings for effective results are 25j and up on the 12mm version and 30-35j and up for the 9mm version.

ND:yag is definitely safer. If I were you, its what I would be treated with. You will still see results on dark coarse hair. [/quote]

Thanks alot.

Does that mean If I was treated with ND: yag the coarse hair would be finer instead of eliminating them ?
Does this result in patchiness ?

What about the risk of being burned with high settings on LightSheer? This idea is putting me off.

Does LightSheer penetrate deeper than ND; yag so the fine hair could be treated with lightsheer better than yag ?

I doubt they will use anywhere near high enough settings to burn you.

LightSheer can go further to treat hairs (i.e. less coarse than needed for the YAG) but only if your skin can handle it, so it would still be better for a type II or III than a IV.
Also, you need someone who knows how to use it properly.

The YAG should do the job, at good settings. Anything left, you can clear up with electrolysis.

She said 17 as start setting, maybe she started with 17 to see what her skin can handle?

If the YAG will make the coarse hair finer I will go for it as I am not looking to be hair-free in this area. But I am worried if this will result in patchiness.

Now I am looking at other options and I found this clinic, they have large spot ND:YAG laser, smaller spot size ND:YAG laser, Alexandrite laser and Q-switched ND:YAG. I have no idea which one is best for my skin type. It says in their website that the Q-switched ND:YAG for light colored and fine hair.

What do you guys think ?

Well I am a guy. I don’t think My skin can handle higher settings on Diode without risking it. I want to be in the safe side.

If you want to be on the safe side, go with a Yag. But like I said, you need effective settings if you want to see any change. It’s hard to burn with a Yag. They’d have to be incompetent. Lack of results is a much bigger issue than burns (which are temporary).
