Darks Spots from Electrolysis

I have just completed my 4th electrolysis session on my upper lip and chin/cheek areas. I am red and sometimes swollen on my upper lip after each session and form scabs the next day (which fade without issue). The problem is the skin on my upper lip and a couple spots on my cheeks has formed red spots that have begun to darken in color.

Now, even though the hair on my upper lip is mostly cleared, it looks like I have a mustache because of the darkened skin.

Is this normal? What should I do? I thought about buying Obagi Nu-Derm Clear to maybe help lighten it. Any thoughts?

Please stop posting the same message to multiple threads ( 3 so far). The professionals will get back to you. It’s not necessary to do so.
Pigmentation on the lip is common for certain skin types. In the vast majority of cases it fades on it’s own given time.
It’s extremely unlikely your hair growth on your upper lip is completely eradicated after just 4 sessions. What you may be seeing is either fine hairs, or hairs that are just starting to break the surface. What you see under magnification compared to what YOU see in the mirror can be vastly different.
If you are seeing significant scabbing on the upper lip every treatment, that could indicate overtreatment. While I’m aDIY’er and not a pro, extensive scabbing from all reports is unusual on the lip and this is consistent with my on experience. Most professionals try to limit sskin reaction when working on the face.

That’ll have to do for answer until one of the professionals come and correct all my mistakes  They are remarkably consistent in answering threads, though it’s not an instant process and does take a bit of time for them to do so.In the meantime adding as much information as you know about your treatments is helpful. Type of electrolysis, and if you have any, pictures save a whole lot of describing.

I apologize for posting to more than one thread…did not realize that was wrong. If I could figure out how to delete them I would. I think I got a little overly excited about being on here and now I definitely regret that.

As for my issue, I never said the hair on my upper lip was completely eradicated. My concern is that the darkened skin and not visible hair, as there is not that much, is causing me to look like I have a mustache. I was hoping I would be able to do something instead of just waiting (b/c it honestly looks worse than when I just had hair and shaved).

My electrologist uses blend. I would have uploaded pictures but, as a new person, I can’t figure out how to. Sorry and thanks for taking your time to try and help.

Hi Meli–

If you have other scars on your body, they may indicate a range for skin dicoloration you might experience. I would consider either going to a dermatologist to review options or look into some over-the-counter options like silicone sheets, skin lighteners, or other cosmetic products. If you have other scars or discolorations in inconspicuous areas, you may want to test these options on them first.

Hi meli

I have only had a test patch which has resulted in hyperpigmentation on my upper lip, I have Asian skin

I’ve not had a proper treatment yet and am dreading it, my e uses thermolysis

I am currently using rose hip oil to help lighten the pigmentation

I also take the following supplements which are good for skin, have been taking for quite a while now,not just for pigmentation but general skin health
Pycnogenol
Vit c
Evening primrose oil

I’m sure it will fade over time

Good luck

Thank you guys for your response. I am Puerto Rican and I know from past experiences that I do not scar well. Oddly enough, my chin and cheeks are for the most part fine, it is just my upper lip that seems to be having the issue.

I will be trying some skin lighteners and I will post any updates. However, if anybody has further information I would LOVE it. Thanks.

Hi Meli,

I have a hyperpigmented upper lip too. Mine is from excessive threading/plucking. I have been told that this can resolve on its own. Yours is probably a mild case, probably similar to hyperpigmentation from pimples that fade within 2-7 months.

You may want to ask to have the settings lowered since you are reacting this way. People with darker skin are prone to hyperpigmentation so it’s best to be as delicate as possible.

The upper lip is full of melanin and is more sensitive than other areas of the face. Wish it wasn’t the worst possible part of your face to have hyperpigmentation!

Please keep us posted on your progress and if you decide to use any creams. I’ll take all the advice I can get!

Hey guys,

So I spoke with my electrologist and she told me not to worry-that it will fade. She did, however, lower the setting.

I am noticing that my skin is doing much better post my last treatment at the lower setting! I will keep you updated.
