dark skin, interested in LHR- questions!!! please

Hi everyone!

I have been suffering from very low self esteem due to the hair on my arms, legs and abdomen. I am ready for laser hair removal no matter what the pain or cost. I need to do this.

I’ve done my research and have learned that the nd:YAG laser is the safest for my skin tone- there is a reputable clinin in my city that I am planning to go to.

Now here are my issues:

I understand that it is not permanent- does this mean I am going to have random patches of hair in random places while being hair free in other areas? meaning, I will still have to wax my legs once in a while but not the ENTIRE leg?

How long does this “reduction” last? am I going to be paying thousands of dollars for hair reduction for a few years?

this is very discouraging :frowning:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated- thanks

What is your hair color and structure? Laser will reduce the amount of hair you have or reduce the size of the hair you have if it is coarse and dark. Can you submit pictures?

I like laser hair reduction for underarms, bikini and lower legs. Abdomen’s ??? hmmm, I’ve seen mixed results on my clients. They seek electrolysis to finish the job. Even with a good percentage of reduction, you will still need electrolysis, mostly likely

Laser hair reduction is permanent for some hairs, but may not effect others for reasons of color, structure and laser specialist skill or choice of equipment. Yes, you will have some hair left and it may or may not be in random places. If you still have to wax your legs, it will be easier to do becuase the hair should be less and smaller in structure. Legs are a pretty stable area. I don’t think you have to worry much about getting laser here and if it works well, the hair should not reappear down the road.

If you were talking about your facial hair for laser hair reduction, I would so NO! NO! NO! NEVER! It’s not worth the gamble. Body work in the areas you mentioned should help, but there are variables involved so don’t think laser hair reduction will be the total answer. If it is, we will rejoice with you.

Thanks so much for your quick and informative reply, Dee. I am looking forward to this- a major reduction would be fine-

How about… on the buttocks? what kind of effect would laser treatment have here?

It should be effective IIIIFFFFFF! you have a host of factors present. Coarse, dark hair, light skin with growing hair, not resting hair, the best laser used for your skin color, a skilled laser specialist and a proper schedule, timed to get GROWING HAIR is the best scenario. If your hairs are fine and dark, it will be very difficult to achieve the amount of reduction you want, if any.

I say this as an electrologist who has observed clients who have had laser hair reduction in all areas possible. They come to me to continue the job of relieving them of unwanted hair when laser fails them. When I talk about laser, I am coming from the side of the fence as an electrologist, not as a laser specialist who performs treatments on clients. Another point: I have been on this and other boards since 2003 and have read every post about client experiences in regard to laser, so I get my information from these sources as well. You need to ask your laser specialist about your particular needs and hopefully they will be honest with you so you don’t end up spending a lot of money for no results or minimal results. By the time the laser client gets around to coming to me, they complain they have spent so much money on laser, they don’t think their husband will agree paying for electrolysis. The recession makes this problem worse, but I can’t help them with the money part as I have an office to run and I need to make a living and pay a boat load of taxes(my patriotic duty, you know).

I wish you luck, but the more effort and time you devote to learning, the luckier you get ;).
