considering laser/ need some help

I found this laser place that only specializes in laser hair removal. The name is Laser Estetica, in Thornhill, Ontario. If anyone is familiar with that area…I don’t live that close but I am willing to travel. Is it a good thing that they only perform hair removal and no other type of laser treatments?
they’ve been in business since 1993, and I have a consult next week.

Has anyone heard/ been to them? if so please give me some feedback, anything would be helpful!

Thanks!

Yes, it’s one good thing to start. However, you need to look into other things about this clinic, such as type of laser they use, experience of the actual person treating you each time, settings, etc.

See the link below for questions to ask them.

Thank LAgirl

I have asked who will be performing the treatments, and she said only one person will be treating you anytime you have treatments. I asked which machine, she said Coolglide. I’m not sure about settings yet, but I guess I’ll ask once I go to the appointment. My friend has gone to this place, and has had great results (like 90% reduction!)
But she stuck to the scheduling they laid out for her, and also went on maintenance program. I will be dedicated, I HATE arm hair!

What is your skintype? Coolglide by Cutera is a yag so unless you have dark skin it’s not the best option especially if you’re travelling, since it’s not really something worth travelling for. How dark is your skin and your friends?

Yes, Coolglide is a Yag, so best for darker skin and very coarse hair. Is this what you have on your arms? Are arms the only area you’re treating?

I have an olive skin tone (looks tanned all year round) I tan really easily in the summer. I tried another laser by Candela, the gentlelase, but that left little burn marks on my face. I’m not sure if the settings we too high for my skin tone but thats what happened.
My friend has lighter skin than me, so I assume if it worked for her I should get fairly decent results.

Where exactly are you? Are you in Toronto? There’s so many other laser places I don’t see why you’d want to travel all the way yo Thornhill just for it unless you’re north of there or something…

I live 10 minutes from the clinic lol…I’ve been to clinics in Toronto, and have not found a reputable one with success. Seems like they are inexperienced/just want your money. Thornhill is literally 10 minutes from me, I live in Richmond Hill (not sure if anyone is familiar with that area) but it’s close.

If you are that dark, then I don’t see why a Yag would be a problem. GentleLASE definitely is preferable for fair-skinned people. Candela makes GentleMAX too which has a Yag, so that is another option…

Oh okay, was going by your original post, you said you don’t live close but you’re willing to travel. 10 minutes seems pretty close to me… I live downtown probably 2km from my laser place, but by the time I drive there park and go to the place it takes me 20 minutes so 10 to me is not far at all.

Either way as I’ve said in other forums before, whether one person has results at a clinic doesn’t really mean much. I mean the fact your friend likes it and it works for him or her should be good enough. When asking for recommendations on a clinic, it’s more that you should be asking for people’s advice on whether they have fair prices, clean atmosphere, seem experienced, are helpful, don’t seem like a rip off etc. It shouldn’t be asking if people have results, because everyone’s skin type is different. As I mentioned in another forum, I go to one clinic with my friend who’s a completely different skin type. He uses Apogee Yag and I use the Alex. I get full shedding and for most his treatments he has very little. If you asked him to recommend our clinic he’d probably say it doesn’t work that well where I’d say I love it. So you really just need to find out for yourself how effective a place is, and make sure you realize that because one person has results, it’s good but doesn’t mean everything!

I know that it doesn’t mean I’ll get results. But because they only specialize in hair removal seems more of a guarentee that they know what they’re doing. And they have been in business for over 12 years, so at least it helps figure out their experience. The lady on the phone was very knowledgeable as well, and shes not a technician, but she is required to know how to asnwer all questions when people are calling. That says a lot to me, because other place I have called they always say, when you come in for the consult the tech will answer any questions.

That to me just seems they want me to come in so they can sell me, this lady answered everything I wanted to know over the phone, knowing full well I could just say, “that’s ok no consult for me”.
So I have a good feeling about them, hopefully I won’t be disappointed. I let you guys know about my progress!

Also, how often should I go in for treatments on the arms, every 6-8 weeks?

That’s about right. But to be perfectly accurate, you want to go in for treatments when the next phase of hair grows in. If at 6 weeks you are still pretty hairless, then it’s too early. If at 6 weeks your hair has grown back (at least enough to justify buying an entire session to treat it), then go back. Your growth rate should dictate your schedule more than anything else.

For example I had my legs treated 6 weeks ago and they are still totally bald. I need to wait a few more weeks (legs seem to have fairly long cycles though, so your arms might not have that problem).

Thanks so much! I hope this place provides good results…I had one treatment already at another clinic, and the hair came back within 2 weeks. Very minimal shedding? Is that normal on first treatment?
When I went in, they didn’t shave the area properly, the hairs were pretty long and visible (not stubble) could this be a reason why?

It’s not normal of the first treatment, all hair should shave. Usually its best to shave yourself at home so you can take your time, but it’s beneficial to leave it sometimes so they can see the area. There should be no visible hair otherwise all the laser energy will concentrate on that and burn it and possibly your skin. It should be shaved smooth.

When I do my arms, I’m at 9 weeks since last treatment and my hair is just starting to come back. It depends on the area, it’s not a set time, it’s when the hair comes back that you go for the next session.

Thanks! Ya I was wondering why they didn’t shave it completely. Then she said I wouldn’t get great results on my arms cause theres not a lot of hair. Then she showed me her arms and why she didn’t get good results. Literally her arm hair is like baby peach fuzz, where as mine is actual dark long hair (not like leg hair) but dark and lots of it. I think she’s misinformed.

For your skin type, you do need a Yag. So Coolglide is good for you. Other options are GentleYAG or GentleMAX or Apogee Elite. GentleLASE is not good for you since you’re too dark for it.

Arms don’t need treatments more than once every 8-12 weeks.
