Can laser hair removal make your eyelashes fall out

I have been doing laser hair removal for about a year and a half. Recently I upgraded to full body and started getting my legs done. I noticed that after getting a large section of my body treated that a lot of my eyelashes started falling out. Can this be from the laser? Do you think they will grow back??

Please Help!

Are you wearing eye protection during your treatments?

I would say “No”. Have you googled your question yet to see what conditions or disease processes could possibly be responsible for this happening to you? Once you have researched this, then a visit to your primary care physician is in order.

Yes I always wear eye protection. I wear large rose clored glasses while they treat my body and metal goggles when they do work on the face.

I have looked it up on the internet and all I can see is an over active throid. I have been tested in the past and it was negative. This only started happening once I started the large sections of the body…

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause eyelashes to fall out in large amounts.

Do you wear mascara? Use an eyelash curler? Rub your eyes alot? Are you stressed and perhaps that is interfering with your nutritional requirements for getting the right amount of vitamen B complex? Alopecia areata could be the culprit. New medications? There is also a mite that can live in our bed linens called D. folliculorum. It can get into the eyelash follicles and consume epithelial cells (gross) and cause the eyelids to look swollen, inflammed and thus plug the follicles. Some people pull their hair out as a ritual (trichotillomania)?

So, I don’t know what the answer is for you, Aly, but I really don’t think it’s related to laser. Might you have asked your laser practitioner this same question? If nothing can be ruled out for causing your eyelashes to fall out, then we will always wonder about a laser/ eyelash connection, but I really don’t see how this would be possible. Even if you were not wearing goggles at the time of treatment, the laser energy was not concentrated in that particular area. By the way, everyone should wear goggles when they have a treatment.

thyroid problems also cause facial and body hair issues. so it’s worth looking into it again. laser can’t affect eyelashes or any other area that wasn’t actually targeted with the laser light.

I hope I’m not imposing, but I would like to know if you really think that wearing mascara can make your eyelashes fall out. If so, why? what’s the explanation? Just in case I’m going to remove my mascara right now!

More questions: what should the appropriate goggles be like? Like the ones you use to swim but with darker glasses? Should the glasses be of any particular color?

Are all goggles the same? Should they adhere to the surrounding skin like swimming goggles or could they rest on the bridge of your nose and ears like regular glasses?
Should you wear some kinds of goggles when you treat your legs or underarms and another kind when you treat your face?

  • yes, using mascara consistently can make eyelashes fall out after a while. i only try to use it on the weekends for that reason.

  • your clinic will provide you with the appropriate goggles. you should be wearing them no matter which area is being treated

“Marathon” mascara from the 70’s and 80’s was infamous for making lashes fall out. I was a victim. I know of no other brand that has effected so many people, but I would think that there are some out there that effect a small population. I wear mascara daily, and have not had it happen since my Marathon days. More than mascara, using eye makeup remover improperly can cause a loss of lashes. Wet a cotton ball or pad and hold on the lashes at least 10-20 seconds. This will allow the solution to do much of the work without a lot of rubbing and scrubbing of the lashes.

Laser goggles are specific to the laser’s wavelength. Some goggles are made for multiple wavelengths. For the client, I like the tight fitting, less chance of an accident. The laser operator has many choices.

I am so sorry to hear that, my friend actually also suspected something like that: like if she lost her eyelashes due to X-rays!.. But in fact it was lack of vitamins A, B12 and some others, plus a bad mascara. I gave her my Cherish Lash conditioner and mascara that I had, and later bought more for myself. It’s a healing mascara that restores your eyelashes instead of killing them!.. Good health and smiles to everyone…

What I’m saying is not germane to the topic, but sort of. Okay, not really.

In the 1980s I got my esthetician license and bought all sorts of skin-care machines from Germany (Deutsche-Nemectron). I spent a bundle. I got rid of the whole fraudulent lot after I determined that all these machines did virtually nothing. However, because of having a license, I received all sorts of beauty magazines.

The "before and after’ photos of women is the subject here. The women without make-up and "hair jobs’ … and then the "after’ with the "do’ and make-up. In EVERY case, the women without make-up looked more attractive than the Halloween version. For me, make-up is mostly scary. I would wager than most men find "natural women’ more attractive.

Women are gorgeous … and "they don’t need NUTTIN’!’ So far, in my very long life, I have never heard a guy say, "Oh I really love that girl because she has terrific eyelashes!’ (And, yes, I know you all do this for yourselves … and that’s perfectly fine. Just saying.)
