Can chest trimming cause ingrown hairs??????????

Hi,

I am brand new here and I am desperatly trying to find answers from anyone.

I have been trimming by chest hair with a trimmer for about 3-5 years with only a very slight acne once in a while(used to have back acne but it has dissappeared with Benzoyle Peroxide) now about 3 months ago about 5 days after trimming my chest hair, I started breaking out in patches of medium size red acne like bumps…i dont know if its acne or ingrown hairs…keep in mind i am NOT shaving but closesly trimming with a guard on #1…about a week passed and they were basically gone…trimmed again and again the same thing happened…they really dont have puss or a whitehead but like a reddish irration…not small like razor burn though…do people think this is ingrown hairs??? WHY would I NOT have this issue for all the years I have trimmed before?? I have not changed anything regarding creams or lotions…ANY ADVICE or thoughts is much appreciated!!!

They are probably not ingrown hairs. You just about have to shave down to the skin to get ingrown hairs. It could be acne. If they were ingrown hairs you would be able to see a trapped hair in them. The fact that they went away by themselves indicates they are not ingrowns.

Did you try the Benzoyl Peroxide to see if it helped?

THks so much for your response…BUT why does it keep happening after trimming then go away then come back after I trim again…AND why is this only happening now and never before in the past??? This summer has been a very hot and humid one but any thoughts or idea is again much appreicated:)

I’ve never had acne, so I don’t know what makes it better or worse. I don’t really know why the trimming would cause it. Maybe shaving clean would make it better, I don’t know. Laser treatments may be the answer. Laser is used to treat acne BTW, but on a different wavelength than for hair removal.

You should check with your doctor and see what he thinks.
Nobody has posted much info on here about acne and how it relates to body hair.

Hi thunder

It’s not really ingrowns causing this problem. I have also noticed this after chest hair trimming. My personal theory is that the hairs get “stubbley” and the movement of the hair against your clothes causes local irritation at the hair root. This would account for the “acne” bumps.

A rash that could pass for acne is also sometimes found after recent trimming until your skin gets used to it. I reccomend shaving the skin smooth and then using a hypoallergenic cream or a preperation such as Tendskin to sooth the skin surface. Bear in mind your skin is an organ of your body and will take time to adapt, so don’t expect overnight results.
