Blonde/light brown pubic hair

Hi all.

My pubic hair looks kind of blonde when it grows but it looks dark when it’s short. My head hair also is also darker at the roots but is really light brown at the ends, I even have occasional blonde highlights. I have both black haired and blond ancestors if that makes a difference. I did a laser hair removal(they used Alexandrite, at 14j, it forgot the size, my skin is type 2,maybe even 1,5, I’m very pale, but it’s possible for me to get a slight tan) on my bikini 2 weeks ago and so far I have seen just a little bit of shedding :frowning: I will go back next week for a retouch. But my question is - some of my hairs are darker, but they haven’t shed, so is laser for me at all? My skin is super sensitive and gets irritated easily, I don’t want to go back to shaving (waxing is out of the question) and electrolysis seems too long for this area. Advice?
Thank you!

14 joules? Sounds low? Was this your first treatment? Maybe the technician was testing your skin reaction? The hairs won’t be affected if the energy level is too low.

If your hair roots are dark, laser reduction should give you a certain percentage of hair reduction.

Yes, it was my first treatment in the area. The doctor said that they’re trying not to burn my skin. I’m not sure why this is necessary though, my skin is very pale with no dark undertones. From what I read here, it’s OK to start with 14 joules? Or is it better to start higher? I’m wondering whether to go to a different place for the next treatment but this place has very good reputation.

Oh, and btw, the treatment did hurt. I also did my underarms and I think they’re not properly shedding either. I might be wrong though.

14 joules isn’t enough information unfortunately. There’s other factors involved such as pulse width and spot size. That combination of information is necessary to determine if the treatment is appropriate. Higher joules and spot size, and lower pulse width is ideal treatment, but without knowing the parameters, it’s impossible to say. In an ideal setting, at least 16J would be nice (with the right spot size and pulse width), but if the other settings are poor, then 16J isn’t enough.

Additionally, 2 weeks isn’t really enough time to gauge shedding. It takes longer. You might be able to physically pull our some hairs and notice they come out easily, but not all. At least for me, it took at least a few weeks before the area looked more bare

So, true, Brenton about knowing all the parameters. It does take up to three weeks for sufficiently treated hair to shed. Gentle exfoliation can help the process along. You are getting treatment with an excellent laser, so that makes me smile.

OK, I will call and ask them about details. I hope I don’t irritate them too much.

I’ve read here that you need to wait the whole 3 weeks but when I called the clinic, they said that they do retouch sessions 14-15 days after the treatment, why would that be the case?

I took a look at the hair again and for some reason the outer hair has shed much better than the inner hair. The hair that’s left looks kind of light but there are some darker hairs that haven’t shed and I can’t pull them out without resistance. I don’t know if I need to upload a picture but while the hairs are light, most are certainly not blonde and they still have some pigment, aren’t they supposed to shed, too, it’s just that maybe they will grow back? The doctor warned me that the hair on the lips might have a hard time shedding the first time but I’m talking about hair on the front that hasn’t shed! Any ideas

If you have a mixture of hair colors in various stages of growth and non-growth, then you won’t see much in the way of success. Retouching may mean that not enough hairs shed in the first two weeks, so they go in for a second try.

Laser energy is attracted to coarse, dense, dark hair. If the hairs on your upper lip are small in structure and not very dark, then there is little hope that those hairs will be affected.

I don’t know why people choose to gamble and spend with this area when electrolysis is the sure thing for every hair structure, every hair color, every stage of growth on any color of skin. It is not cost efficient to do laser to only discover that it didn’t affect most of hair and then turn around and spend more money on electrolysis to finish the job.

Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean upper lip, I meant the lips down there. I’m not sure what’s the correct way to call them (downer lips?). I’m not even dreaming of doing laser on my face after reading this forum

I’m laughing 'bout now… hehe!

So I went for a retouch and they were very nice and didn’t charge me extra. There were some more hairs that shed meanwhile. However, some did not. The doctor used the laser on them with higher settings (didn’t tell me what they were) and it did hurt quite a bit. Unfortunately, some hairs didn’t curl up after being treated and they told me they were too light for laser. Apparently I have way too many blonde hairs, a few on my armpits and quite a bit in my bikini zone. The doctor even told me that she thinks laser on my bikini is not worth it :frowning:

The outer bikini line hairs have shed much better though. They seem to be darker there. I wonder if it’s because I used a rotary epilator on them a couple times a year for over 12 years? Could they have become darker because of that?

Now I’m wondering what to do. Do you think getting more laser treatments will be beneficial? The blonde hairs will apparently stay, but they don’t bother me that much, maybe I can become 100% blonde this way? Or is this a long shot? I had no idea how light the hairs were, they always seemed dark to me when they were short. Or maybe not do full Brazilian, but only focus on the outer bikini line?

go to electrolysis!
