Hello, I have just read on another diy site that says if you put your salt water in a stainless steel container (she used a stainless steel dog bowl)you will get better and faster hair removal.Does anyone know if this is true.
I don’t know what kind of eqipment you are using, but most professional epilators don’t require the bowl and salt water thing. A simple wet sponge or paper towel suffices.
Water without salt (like distilled water) has an electrical resistance of between 40,000 Ohms to 900,000 Ohms. Water with salt has an electrical resistance of approximately 500 Ohms. So, the conclusion is, water without salt does not produce enough galvanic current to efficiently kill a hair, so the salted water in a bowl idea has merit and will work.
Most tap water these days contains suffient salts, so no additional salt need be added. Simply resting your hand on a wet sponge is enough. However, if the hand in the salt water stainless steel bowl is what you prefer, mix 2 tablespoons of salt with one quart of water for your conducting solution and zap away. This will provide good conductivity of the current and the best contact with the least electrical resistance.

Hello dfahey,
Thank you very much for this really illuminating advice.
I should have said that I use a ONE TOUCH, I know it is the most basic thing, but it really does work, I have PCO and I have had very severe hairsutism, full under chin beard and very very heavy hair on the sides of my face,I also had very long heavy sideburns (it almost met my beard) but I took a year out and I have almost cleared it, I do have some very persitent grey hairs under my chin and on my neck which I have not been able remove even though I have been working on them for at least 5 times, at the highest setting for 90 seconds.
I did go to a Pro years ago who used flash and I THINK a bit of blend, but all the hairs grew back in about six weeks, and sadly it left me very marked (not scar) it took years to fade away.
I really should have checked to see what was best for my hair type which is fairly curly and VERY VERY COURSE under my chin. I am mixed race so some hairs are very course especailly under my chin, and I had been plucking for about 10 years.
Are you under a physicians care for the PCOS? Taking action to control the source of the problem will help with one of side effects of PCOS - increased hair growth.
It sounds like your One Touch experience has been very helpful, so good going joyann. I’m just amazed that you could do most of your face work yourself, as some angles of insertion would be very difficult to judge. Coarse, deep gray hair is tough hair, so I’m not surprised these are the ones giving you trouble. If I were you, I would find a professional that does Blend or straight galvanic (multi-needle), and finish those off with a professional that can see the neck area well. A good flash operator is okay, too, but you didn’t have a great experience with the last one, so I could understand why that may be your last consideration.
Your comment about all the hair growing back in 6 weeks after flash was used,is not surprising. It is hard to know if those were treated hairs or new hairs that weren’t available for treatment at time. Could have been a mixture of both. For those coarse, deep, curley type hairs, the root structures are pretty hardy and need longer timing and the production of lye to break them down or even do away with them the first try, IF they are in the growth stage (anagen). That’s where the blend method or straight galvanic comes in handy. These two methods are gentler on the skin, when the levels are correct. An electrologist with a great up-to-date epilator, employing certain techniques can use flash successfully to bring ultimate destruction to those PCOS kind of hairs, too. However, sadly, there are many out there who do not update their equipment, including vision equipment, to do this a better way. That’s why I would stick with a good blend electrologist to get those diehard grays.
Coarse hair is tough, but coarse curley hair is a B-----. All the more reason to do the blend of multi-needle galvanic. It may take a couple passes or two hair growth cycles to ultimately destroy these guys, but it would still be the best for your situation.

dfahey, Once again thank you for your very informative reply, all you have said is correct.
I am under the Doctor for my PCOS,I take cyproterone for 10 days of the month, I had also managed to lose 5 stone in weight, sadly only kept it off for about 18 months ( I am on that treadmill again)the medication made all the hair under my armpits fall off but it did nothing for the facial hair that was already there.
How I use the ONE TOUCH is this, I use a 10x mag mirror, a 200watt movable lamp, bright daylight to the side I am working on (I find it hard to work on dull days),a chair that moves up and down(with plastic feet and arms,I read that it should not be metal) and I keep the table covered with clean paper towels, I change towels ever time I start again.
When I first started I was so afraid,I was covered in sweat, I actually gave up for about 3 days, in the end I managed to get some kind of grip on the task.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER TO HAVE GONE TO A GOOD PRO, but I could not find anyone who would do GALVANIC,they kept saying “GALVANIC?” so needs most where the devil drives.
I think I was lucky, I do have a tiny scar near my left ear,
this happened about a week after I first started(June 04)
I have tried to find a PRO to remove the few remaining hairs, but no luck,no one seems to do pure galvanic.
I also have a problem with bumpy skin under my chin, I think this is from pluckin,James gave me good advice, tea tree oil,it works a bit, but I will try silicon sheeting when I have finished this marathon task.
With regards to my one PRO experience, I had shaved the hairs she removed, but I THING I RECALL THAT I WORE MAKE-UP TOO SOON, SO INFECTION COULD HAVE BEEN MY FAULT. She was very very clean, and so was the premise.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
could you explain to me why you insisted on Galvanic instead of Blend?
Dear toeman,
The date of the post above you is from May, 2005. You may not get a reply.
haha I see
I was just browsing some posts…Out of interest…
But you’re right…I guess I’ll never know…
You’re fine. I’ve done that before, too. Just didn’t want you to be anxiously waiting for a reply…
