Back hair removal, am I a candidate? (pics)

I want to get rid of this back hair so bad, I’m afraid to take my shirt off in public and even with friends. I went to a dermatologist who told me he could do my whole back, top of arms, and neck with his gentlelase laser. I have concerns about induced hair growth on the finer hair, and would love your guys’ opinions if he was just trying to get my business. He identified me as skin type three to four, because the area to be lasered was tanned. I’ve included pictures, and can try to take better ones if these are not sufficient.

I found a place closer to me that is more reasonably priced than the dermatologist I saw, and has many great reviews on yelp and such. But they use the lightsheer laser, is this a good fit for me?

Thanks guys I appreciate your help.

These are just my opinions, I’m sure others will weigh in too… but:

I think you are definitely a candidate. The hair you have appears thick enough to respond and your skin is fair and the hair is dark. If my experience is anything to go by (and I have not completed the race yet), then I’d say count on needing at least 6 sessions over the next 18 months or so. I really don’t think you are a type 3-4 though. 2-3 maybe, but its hard to tell from the pictures you posted. You can categorize yourself accurately by looking up the fitzpatrick criteria on google.

As for the choice of clinic, I would go with the dermatologist. He uses a laser that works well on fair skin / dark hair and he will probably have more expertise than the technician at the other place you found (assuming that is not also a dermatology practice). It may be more expensive, but this is something that you need to get right from the start - I wouldn’t necessarily be looking for the best price as a primary consideration. Although nothing is a guarantee in this world, the premise is that you are paying for the skill and experience of a skin specialist. The derm may also be able to address some of your concerns over the induced growth issue, and / or perhaps you should just treat the areas of high density growth.

I started my treatments about a year ago, after much procrastination. I am using essentially the same laser as your dermatologist is offering, and am pleased with the results. You can see my thread here:

My primary advise would be:

  1. The correct laser is very important, and for your situation the GentleLase / GentleMax is considered to be right up there

  2. Go aggressive on the settings from day one: assuming you’re a 2-3 then max joules, max spot size. If it hurts (and it probably will) then just suck it up. Unfortunately pain often equals success in this game!

  3. Schedule the follow up sessions to fit your personal hair growth cycles - don’t just stick to a formulaic and oft quoted “every 6-8 weeks” follow up if it doesn’t coincide with new and active growth - you will waste money in the long term and not optimise the hair kill rate.

Good luck!

Your hair is not coarse enough for laser. In my opinion, you would be taking a huge risk with laser and will potentially induce more growth. I would recommend that you go straight for electrolysis on all of the hair in the photos.

LAgirl, is this actually the case ?

For me it’s sounds some strange since I see this kind
of hair very often in clinic pictures under the Before/After section ? I getting a feel of the main population is
exluded for laser treatment if this back not is a candidate ?

I know you are the Guro here, but I hope my question here
is taken the right way

Thanks!

What you see in promotional photos is called “marketing”. We’re here to help you avoid wasting your money. In the end, you can decide for yourself what you want to do with the information you receive. I just don’t want you to come back here and post that LHR doesn’t work. It does, but only on the right type of hair, which I do not believe you have.

I dont think laser is such a good idea given that hair does not look so densely packed. It’s sort of patchy. There is a fair chance of inducing more hair if the laser hits the area with no hair…

Get electrolosis.

I think that although your back is atypical for laser hair removal, you will get very good results on your mid back as well as PARTS of your upper back. If you do laser, they need to be very careful when and if they treat you on the upper arms. They should definitely not touch areas of upper arms. A smaller spot size may help.
