Arlene

Many of you know Arlene. She responded to my private message yesterday and tells me she is doing okay as NYC struggles to get back to normal. She is helping her family and friends as best she can. Please keep her and all our East Coasters in your thoughts and prayers. One of my daughters is there, so throw in a prayer for her, too.

She has been in my thoughts too. It must be a really difficult time to get through. I am relieved to know that she is safe, and I wish for a speedy recovery process for all.

That’s a relief. I left a message at her office but no telling where she lives. I only live about 2 hours NW of NYC and all we got was very little rain and about 4 hours of gusty wind. Being this close the news coverage is nonstop. The devastation is shocking !

For those not on facebook, Arlene checked in. She’s ok although by the looks of things her neighborhood got torn up pretty bad.

At least she’s safe and sound.

Today is my first day at work since the hurricane. There was no power from half of midtown Manhattan and below. But everything in my area looks back to normal now, save for the 6-hour-long lines for gasoline.

Glad to hear this, yb. Sorry about the gas lines. Are they rationing like New Jersey?

I don’t think so. They’re just promising that more gas is on the way. But so far, I only see updates from friends on facebook who’ve found an open gas station and are waiting in line through the night. :o

In the few places where you can find gas, they are mostly rationing - $30 worth of gas but anyone can get gas as long as they have the patience to wait. NJ is restricting gas based on your license plate ODD one day, EVEN license plate the next day.

[color:#003300]I guess some people need the gas for generators, as well as for their cars. I heard how much gas those little generators use up. I didn’t know they were that gas-hungry. I don’t know how someone would run them in an apartment, unless they ran a vent line out a window. I think the noise would be nerve racking.

I guess people are all getting locking gas caps too.

I really hope you two, Arlene and yb, are pulling through all this. You know as they say, “tough hairs never last, but tough electrologists do.”[/color]

Ha! I like that last line Mantaray.

About five years ago, I had a Kohler 17 kilowatt generator installed that runs on natural gas. Its a great insurance policy to have and works great with little effort. No need for getting gasoline. This past summer, when my neighborhood’s power was out for five days, it worked great and was no louder than a vacuum cleaner. Two of my neighbors were in a tiff about the noise of one of the neighbors gasoline powered generator. I invited the neighbor with the gasoline generator to ditch his generator and use my home for powering their refrigerator and a room air conditioner. Luckily, he had a very long extension cord to plug into my outdoor outlets. I think that cooled tempers and brought peace to the neighbors. Now, both of them bought their own natural gas powered generator, so there will peace in the hood next time the power goes off.

Thinking about you everyday, Arlene! Glad you and YB are doing okay !
