Appointments frequency and hair growth cycles

Hello everyone, I went for electrolysis on my neck today (back and front) and the electrologist I visited suggested that I should wax both areas first and then come back in 2-3 weeks in order to have all hairs in anagen phase. Now I have read on the forum that it is possible to get effective treatments on telogen hairs. She also advised me that I would have to come back once a week or every other week to clear both areas in order to have hairs in anagen. I asked if I could come and clear once a month, she said she could do it but that I would be throwing money away for no reason. Now she is an electrologist for over 30 years and well known here in Montreal so I don’t understand why in her opinion telogen hairs are “dead” and do not respond to treatments.

She works in thermolysis with a Silouet-Tone machine. Can I just have her treat telogen hairs anyways and see results. Or does she need a different technique for anagen and telogen hairs. Does she need to use blend instead? I don’t know.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

wow, ok let me see if I can explain this one.

The belief that hairs must be treated in only anogen is incorrect, as you have correctly surmised from reading here. It’s a proven fact. Multiple electrologists on this board have proven that they have been able to clear area is 2-3 clearances, an accomplishment that makes impossible the assertation that telogen hairs are nnot killed. They may require additional skill and techniques to kill them, but telogen hairs can be killed like any other. There is more than enough moisture in deep follicles to conduct heat or create lye necessary to perform a successful epilation.

However, for many years it was believed that only Anogen hairs should be treated. So the theory goes, telogen hairs are “too dry” in the follicle to have sufficient effect from either thermolysis , or blend treatments both of which rely on moisture content in the follicle to accomplish the destruction of the hair follicle and its germination cells/ blood supply.

Now , because this was believed so widely for so many years, the assertion that only Androgen hairs are killed has become deeply rooted in both the brains of professional electrologists, AND in education about electrolysis. So professionals who were taught “Anogen only” and havent upgraded their knowledge , s well as training maerial in electrology schools even today, all stress an anogen only theorum.

In montreal, is located the Dectro school of electrology. Having been there recently ( we were buying a machine at the time, my partner who is a CPE and myself her apprentise) been at the school, I was advised by the instructor who was helping to demonstrate the machine, that I should be following an anogen only strategy, and also encouraging my clients to come a minimum of every 2-3 in order to catch the hairs all in anogen. So, it’s still being taught in schools today, and as I’m doing my own certification at hte moment, I’m also learning from a textbook, that, guess what , contains a primarily anogen only theory!

So There is a good news/bad news part of this. The good news is, your electrologist could be killing telogen hair, without believing that she is. The bad news side being, that she may not be targeting telogen hairs at all and may be just leaving them until they shed and return as anogen hair extending treatment.

Going once a month, is not going to cause you to throw your money away. There’s no special treatment, except maybe that such hairs require a slightly shallower insertion.

taps foot and waits for Adrien to chime in on this

Seana

Wow thank you for this great explanation Seana. I understand the situation a bit better now. I would love to find an electrologist that could confirm to me she works on telogen hairs. The problem is I visited at least 4 electrologists here in Montreal (btw I heard Quebec is one of the places in the world where electrolysis is most popular) they ALL told me only anagen hairs could be killed. Now Im afraid to go back at her in 2 weeks and tell her to do shallower insertions on telogen hairs as she might feel I’m telling her how to do her job. Plus if I tell her “I read this and that on the internet” she might not take it seriously. I really don’t know what to do because I can’t afford (money and time) going for treatments every week. Hope I can explain to her what you explained to me.

Mimir, don’t tell her what you have read, tell her what you saw …

Just in case she needs incontrovertible evidence, tell her from me that I can provide a couple of thousand.

Muchas gracias Josefa. Le voy a hablar de ti y de tu fabuloso trabajo. Yes Im learning spanish with my girlfriend

It would be great if someone could describe the technique as well. Blend or thermolysis ? Shallower insertions for telogen hairs ? Settings ? She works with a microscope, can she see wich hairs are anagen or telogen through her miscroscope ?
